Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well that plan back fired, arrived at the lift at 08:25 to find out they were not opening till 09:00 as they were still carrying out avalanche control Evil or Very Mad

So went and had a coffee but we could see the hordes arriving early so we went out and joined the queue waiting for the lift to open.

Once up we soon disappeared and had a very nice three or so hours getting first tracks on every descent, and when we did take some lifts there was not too much in the way of queues, but the few occasions we did hit the pistes they were getting busy and muppet factor very high!

Should imagine that the off piste bash crew had a great day.

As avalanche risk was four we skied safer lines and as you can see not exactly crowded Cool

Could see that the pisteurs had indeed been busy setting off slides (see image below) and had been skiing the off piste Vallons sector that is easily accessible and you could see evidence of what they'd been up to as they know that area gets skied very quickly by people not considering the risk, though by the end of today probably looks like a piste now!

Off to Austria tomorrow and have a friend here looking after our dogs and hopefully the webcams!

Sorry to hijack the weather thread but I was hoping for some mountain restaurant recommendations for the Serre Chevalier area - where are the good places to eat? Is there anywhere on the mountain a gentleman can ask for a Gin and Tonic without being laughed out of the bar (this pretty much happened to me in Sauze - I went back the next day and demanded Grappe to try and win the Italians over). Thanks

@Minion1980, I've never ordered one up the mountain before, I tend to stick to vin chaud. I've ordered one in the Alpen bar in Monetier, but that is in the village. AS for mountain restos, best by far are in no particular order . Chalet Peyra Juana (blue Rochamout piste on Monetier side), Troll (Serre Ratier plateau underneath Cafe Soleil), Chalet Hotel Serre Ratier and Bivouac (at top of Casse du Beouf. Halte Pre Chabert as bottom of Monntier pistes does a good Plat du Jour.

@Minion1980, sorry can't be of assistance - though should imagine very upmarket Pia Mai and Echaillon might be able to help in that department, especially the former.

Evidently from my dog sitter very windy up top today so they stayed lower down on their classes.

@Minion1980, I'm not even sure if they do one at PiMAi, they do a wonderful hot chocolate (avec rhum) and one of the best Vin Chauds, but can't say I've noticed any gin on the bar. Biggest bar on the mountain is the Café Soleil.

SoPiB's gone soft with age: with Nick Parks it was no lunch and a very long hike (downwards...through dusty trees...in the wrong country)

Ok mild panic setting in for when we are in Serre Chevalier next week... Minimum Temperatures at a tropical +3 and 11mm of Rain on Monday according to one website... any of you lovely people in the region got any "local" weather forecasts to hopefully contradict this Smile

@Minion1980, we have short listed Serre Chevalier as a contender for our easter holiday departing 28 March. Would be good to have a conditions report when you get back? I'll be primarily interested whether the snow's good enough down to about 2000 meters, that way we could stay up high and still do a fair amount of runs.

@Minion1980, we're back in the UK now, [b[Weathercam[/b] has gone to Austria, and the Off-PIste bashers are far too busy off-piste. Drop back in next week, and I'm sure ther will be some updates.

Just back down from a pleasant ski and a thank you lunch for our friend at Pi Mai who looked after our dogs whilst we were in Austria. For a Saturday transfer day surprisingly busy but no queues. Think many of the people out were property owners who were making the most of their last few days having had in effect a nine day break with some very chic people on the terrace blinged up!
As for snow still very good on piste but all eyes on what the forecast might deliver over the next few days. Looks like rain in the valley. Just hope that snow line is a lot lower than that being predicted!
So no more road trips planned though might nip over to LG depending on what the snow Gods determine.

??? you can always ski down to the lowest point in Briancon even that late in the season.

The runs to Briancon were closed below the midstation when we were there in January.

They do try their best to keep Vauban open for as long as possible in the Spring Toofy Grin

Though was surprised why they did not make better efforts to open it back in Jan, but think they were conscious of the forthcoming Feb holiday period.

Best options though for pistes back to resort that are in good conditions late March / early April are Chantermerle (Luc Alphand) and Villeneuve (Casse du Boueff).

And that's more true for this season as we have not faired too well snow wise below 2000m and tomorrow's predicted rain will not help the situation.

That said of the past six or so years we have spent all of March out here and have encountered staggering volumes of snow even in the valley.

And we were saying last night surely we must at least have one mighty dump which we have not had so far this season in the valley, though does tend to go very quickly.

But if piste skiing is what you're after then conditions will remain excellent for quite a while yet.

Snow / rain forecast for late afternoon and a smattering this morning.

Still very busy in resort judging by cars around, and it is still holidays for Aix and Marseilles hence here in Serre will still be busy this week, and then we can look forward to quieter times Cool

Very spring like this morning walking the dogs but now rather depressing as we've had light rain all afternoon and can't see any sign of fresh snow beyond Frejus and La Balme and meant to be heavy rain all day tomorrow Sad

Temp plus 5 degrees at 18:00 here at 1400m does not bode well for overnight.

Back to glass half empty - oh well writing up various articles after the ski test in Austria last week.

Had to close the window last night due to the sound of running water and rain Sad

All as forecast, temps +3 so maybe snow line circa 2000m - though can't really see - Serre Ratier webcam looks like a dusting on a table maybe as temps dropped ?

Looking at the Serre website they have at 1400 12cm of new snow and temps at Zero - I must be living in a different place !

Take the link from the home page - it's the 40cm in the valley that's amusing - must be a stash well away from the sun and protected from the rain Laughing

Actually it's the English version giving the screen grab below - whilst the French was updated at 08:39 and shows a more realistic scenario.

09:20 - English version now updated

Will make some phone calls tonight to see if a LG road trip is worth it Tues or Wed - though I suspect wind might be an issue.

Been pretty grim all day here though not as bad as forecast with rain easing around Noon and was not that heavy anyway, though cloud was down to around 1600m.

Some huge gusts came through every now and again.

I've just come off the phone to a friend in La Grave, still raining quite heavy in the village but the lift has been closed all day anyway due to the strong winds.

So will wait and see..........

Casse du Boeuff still looked very busy at one point this afternoon whilst above Pontillas / Club Med looked quite empty ?

Does look quite windy for the rest of the week as well.

Certainly a very different season so far to last year - sorry I know glass half empty and all that.
