I don't understand. Was there a large dump of snow in Avoriaz this morning? The webcam that pans across the rooftops show that it is very cloudy but the roofs have the same amount of snow on them with the same melt patterns as were there yesterday. I can clearly see same bird footprints as have been there for days. Do birds make footprints?
Ok, now that I've talked about the weather can someone advise me as to the closest ski hire shop to Club Med. Heading out there in a couple of weeks.

sometimes webcams get 'knocked out' and the stream isn't live if the weather is bad - the picture will come back then you'll see just how much snow there is (not just in Avoriaz) All over the PDS (not just where the crowds are obsessed with)

Similarly all the webcams on Valdilliez.ch also seem to have been turned off at dusk yesterday

We've had over a foot in Chatel now and it's coming down again after a brief pause this afternoon. Windy again too this evening. Glad to be back indoors as the traffic out there is interesting tonight

I don't know! No sign of it stopping here. We did an hour's drive clearing this afternoon and it's still coming down. Our friends coming in tonight are delayed a couple of hours so far.

Ideally I would like to order a full night of snow and sunshine tomorrow, not much really.

All sounding good for the people staying in our chalet from today then - if they have managed to arrive by now.

Not only are the Belgies sliding all over the roads the tonight, they are parking in our spaces because they can't get up to their own, just had a mild altercation with a chap when I told him he couldn't park there

Hey @summer, I'm based in Champery next week for a few days. Should skiing not be imminently possible in Champery do you know if the cable car/lift will be open from the village enabling me to get up to Avoriaz etc? Thinking of pre-purchasing an online PdS lift pass, just in case there's any kind of limited availability when I arrive, or am I getting concerned about nothing? |
Yes it's open and you can ski over. Judging by the quantity that has fallen I think you will be fine

Great day out there, not everything open today. Chamossiere shut, Fys not open.
Perrieres was having issues early on then sorted itself out, more opened during the day.
Snow was great! some good stashes of powder but the light was variable.
Took almost the last chair out of the Bowl and now sat in the chalet watching English Pseudo 4x4's struggling up the hill on towny tyres.
Having arrived here to green pistes on Friday I would never have said I would be knee deep in powder today

@Pamski, thanks! They arrived ok just about 3 hours late! I was stressed as I thought they'd arrive and the drive would be blocked by that guy, wouldn't normally have been do bothered but we needed our space for the guests.
Well!! More snow overnight, probably another 40cm at least on the car this morning!
Superb snow conditions up at Pre la Joux today. Loads of soft fresh stuff on a well groomed base. More runs opened. Some still closed. But importantly the green track and the lower Rochassons are now complete so no need to download by chair as last week.
Nice and quiet first thing but busy by 11.00 and PLJ parking was full and folks were parked all the way down the road.

PLJ was great yesterday, the blue sky opened ( from about 1:15 - 2pm) long enough to make two rides down through DonkeysKnob.
And the runs were open all the way down to the car park (even the little run behind the main car park down to the overflow).
I lost my iphone in the deep powder near the Cornebois chair though

Measured snow depths for the weekend snowfall in Chatel.
1200m - max recorded depth 33cm
1750m - 45 to 50cm fresh snow measured in several locations
above 2000m - 50cm to 60cm plus - however wind affected - so accurate depth measurement impossible and totals may have been nearer to 70cm

@Chatel Snow, That's sounding much better than a week ago. Thanks for the update. We arrive on Sunday next week (after the crowds depart) and it currently looks like more snow next weekend. How did the roads cope? I presume the Pas de Morgins didn't close it's normally well ploughed.

Roads were generally OK in our immediate area from what I understand - slower than normal to get to eg Monthey - but not as severe as other areas as seen in the media.

That's what I'd thought too, good to get confirmation. Thanks for your snow reports every day they have been invaluable for giving us a heads up on what's really going on.
Look forward to being able to see it for ourselves next week!

Great conditions everywhere today, especially when Chamossiere opened. Both the black and the red were superb.
The Off piste is staying very nice, although getting somewhat tracked.
And now its snowing once again

@skidm, Swiss side, the hubby went over today, it was quiet, he skied The Wall which he said was in great condition though closed. Lower runs were still closed and he couldn't ski back round as the links are still not complete.
Great conditions on PLJ sector today. Though quickly becoming very scraped and hard. Some dangerous patches particularly on Combes where the pisteurs were putting up barriers and I was very lucky to stay on my feet especially as I turned round to see 5 members of Thonon ski club come after me and all went down like dominoes. My son reported that in his group everyone had gone down on the same patch too! And further up the run my hubby picked up a little girl who had fallen and was just sliding down a very hard, scraped section.
It was very cold around -14 and the cannons were blasting pretty much all day.
Extremely busy with some runs resembling the wacky races at times.
Started snowing again this afternoon lightly and continued for several hours.

-11 this morning at the car park, about 4-5 inches fresh overnight, very windy high up. All cannons blasting again. Busiest I've ever seen it at NY week.

@sarah, I hadn't realised you had made the season plan work. Well done and hope you're enjoying it despite the late start to the decent snow. The clue is in your signature I now notice!
Are you around from 4-10 Jan? We're arriving Saturday 3rd (transfer day chaos permitting) and it would be nice to meet up at last.
