Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

queen bodecia, maybe there's some correlation between the cheap pants and the fact you go through so many pairs. Buy well, buy once and all that.

Think we are all sorted from the end of season sales last year (though might need a new helmet as mine isn't where it should be which I suspect means it has been treated to the tender care my 7 year old dishes out!) but always a good sign winter is coming when all the surf and skateboard stuff in 2 Seasons in Derby goes into the sale to make space for the ski and board stuff! And I'm never one to pass up a bargain bit of ski kit in Tacky Max!

Alans deep bath, I think ripping salopettes on chairlifts/boots/wooden seats would happen regardless of price paid. And buying big brand name stuff for whatever ludicrous amount does not guarantee quality. They are all made in the same sweat shops in the third world regardless of label.

queen bodecia, give Skiwear4less in Tamworth a try, its a bit pot luck when you go in but you can find top name kit for Trespass prices if you get lucky, my Killy softshell trousers had a manufactures price ticket of €450 but were a rather more reasonable £40 in there and my daughters Westbeach jacket was £50 down from £150, guess it helped there aren't that many XS ladies about but it makes fashionably baggy snowboard gear for an 11 year old!

queen bodecia, I've got a pair of SOS classic salopettes that I bought for what seemed an eye-wateringly expensive amount back in the 90s. Still going strong and I can still fit in the (sometimes wink ). The lining is a wee bit low tech these days, but I wore them a couple of times at the end of last season still. And a friend is still occasionally skiing in my Berghaus goretex sallies circa 1985!! Shocked

I also had some amazing Patagonia stuff (2 sets of Nito jackets and pants) that you bunged in the washing machine and then ironed (yes ironed!!!) with a hot iron to restore the waterproofing. Both got nicked because some scroats thought they were brand-new after about 5 seasons of abuse! They were real quality and I cursed the barstwards to hell and back, but second time around the insurance refused to pay out and I was not in a position to replace them. I still wander into the Patagonia shop in Munich and look lovingly at their stuff

Picking the right name is the key as well as going for the technical rather than the fashionable stuff. wink

This is only partly true. There is a huge difference between expensive fashion-oriented brands and expensive sports-oriented brands.

Certain fabrics and laminates have far better abrasion and tear resistance than the materials used in cheap or fashion ski wear. These fabrics are expensive but made to last. Mountaineers cannot afford to wear jacket or pants that will tear on a rock face because that could be a life endangering situation in bad weather. Same for backcountry skiers.

These brands are definitely worth the money if you do that level of sport. Or if you don't want to have to replace your gear each season because of some minor mishap.

If you tot up your ski pants purchases over the years, would they exceed the cost of a single pair of expensive, well-constructed, hard-wearing ski pants that would still be going strong? I'm not saying buying expensive is the only way to go but only that sometimes it is cheaper in the long run.

Just come back from Bielefeld, Germany and the big Sports Scheck there has new ski wear ranges in - Spyder, Schofell, North Face etc plus some brands I didn't know. Ziener and White Season stuff in particular looks really nice and seems great value (even at dopey exchange rate). Just had a quick look online and Ziener doesn't seem to be available in UK. I managed to buy a jacket I didn't need and increasingly think I shouldn't be allowed in ski shops!

Zero-G, to some extent the same is true of motorcycle gear. Most branded gear is made in the same factories in Pakistan or Turkey, but the difference between the cheapest non-leather gear and the next range up is polyester (grabby, not especially abrasion resistant) to cordura (smooth, very abrasion resistant). In the past I have applied the same principles to ski clothing, don't buy the cheapest of the cheap, but the next range up does the job, especially since I only ski once or twice a year.

I've got through 3 pairs of salopettes over the last 5 years, total cost £97. I can probably afford to spend around £50 this time, so I shall see what seems best (and what fits) for that money.

Ive never understood why anyone would pay 'new seasons' prices when every year the same stuff is put on the shelves but just in 'new seasons' colours.
IMO Shop end of season or even summer and you can get some excelent branded kit at great prices.

So what if its last years colours. Puzzled

New boots......really want some new boots. Old ones have done 20 weeks and looking the worse for wear plus liners compacted. Just trying to decide whether to buy on resort for immediate trial/adjustment or in the UK. First and only experience was the latter and those boots have been nothing but excellent.....Anyone know if the UK fitters have their stocks in yet? I've deliberately been steering clear of ski outlets I can never resist buying ever more gear rolling eyes Laughing

And if anyone is interested in secondhand stuff then my OH reports that there appears to be much more on ebay now for children than a few weeks ago.
He seems to be happily sitting at his computer buying stuff for our grandchildren - on the basis that if they don't like it, doesn't fit etc its only been a couple of bob. A very nice boys ski suit apparently now bought for the four year old from French ebay.
