Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi

How long would it take a group of intermediates to ski from Tignes le Lac to Val d'Isere main village? Including lifts etc and assuming that queues are minimal.

Thanks,

Shaky

An hour and a half is a cautious estimate for many intermediate skiers.

Would that be 1.5 hrs from first lift out of Tigne to landing in Val?

I know, nitpicking questions but sadly it's to help convince a friend of the merits of Tignes over Val.

shaky, If your friends are of an intermediate level then they'll all prefer skiing into resort in Tignes as most of the runs home are reasonable blues rather than Val's World Cup prepacred race pistes! Good runs they are, but they can be a bit of a shock for many.

Back when we were all younger we ran the SumitJam out of Tignes (3 hours to cover as much distance as possible, not allowed to use any lift more than once). I was able to do the '5 points' in this time - top of both Tignes & Val glaciers, Breviers, La Daille & Fornet. 1.5 hours Tignes le Lac to centre Val should be no problem for an intermediate skiier.
One good reason to stay in Tignes over Val - easier runs (excepting carnage corner on Trolles) into the resort.

Thanks for the help guys. The reason for asking is that a mate (intermediate) is convinced that Val is where he should be skiing, but I've already booked Tignes.

Dare I ask what carnage corner is?

shaky, Tignes/Val makes no difference to the skiing. Makes a load of difference for the village atmosphere i.e. Tignes = zero.

Carnage corner, I'm guessing, is the last steep section back to Tignes Le Lac and the aeroski bubble. Many straight line it before realising they're a little out of their comfort zone.

I think Kenzie is referring to the ridge above the steep pitch of the Trolles. Although the run is marked as black from the top the first half (whichever route you take) is no more than an easy red. This lulls the unwary into a point of no return as they pass the bottom of the Combe Folle Poma. The piste narrows and then becomes a cheeky black as you pass under the Aeroski cables. Cue 1630hrs and lots of people staring down at something they wish they didn't have to ski. You then have to assess when to enter the chuss to avoid a long walk at the bottom. The only blessing is it as not as steep for as long as it used to be after they dumped the spoil from the underground carpark on the bottom half.

For the wise you return to Val Claret via Piste H and get the bus if necessary.

As to Dr John's comment on the atmosphere in Tignes - suffice to say I don't recognise it!

chocksaway, I was being somewhat mischievous with my comment. Having been to both many times I much prefer Val, mainly because there's an identifiable 'centre' to it, and the line of restaurants with views up both Solaise and Bellvarde are great places for hanging out on a nice day.

And the drunk Jemimas, obv.

Ditto that comment, have stayed at both Val and Tignes and far prefer Val village for 1 its a proper village, 2 atmosphere, 3 Bars and shops.
Ski area is just one large area, regardles of where you stay. Hopping over to Tignes from Val and vice versa is simple and quick. Myself and my wife regulary hop from 1 glacier to another and all the bits inbetween on a dailey basis when we are there. Stayed Val 5 times and Tignes 1, about to go back for a 6 time in Val in March (cant wait)

home runs back to Tignes are easier than the home runs back into Val if someone is not a great skier. Trolles back into Le Lac is not a hard black, it only has 1 steepish pitch but this is short lived. Could be intimidating i suppose for an early int skier. Bellvarde in Val is a lot steeper for prolonged periods and is deffo a true black run if returning to Val from Belvarde/tignes side (but you can always take the gondola down if your not upto skiing it) Solaise has Rhone Alps (black) or piste M (red) piste to return back into Val (piste m imho could be a black in some resorts as it is quite steep in places (harder than Trolles in Le Lac/tignes)

The skiing is easier over Tignes side IMHO, but the whole E-Killy shared between Val & Tignes is really just one big ski area and it really does not matter what village you stay in regards acsess of the ski area. But given a choice i stay in Val every time as its just a better village IMHO and i also prefer the skiing on the val side, but we do spend around 50/50 of our time between Val/Tignes sides just to give a wide range of differnet/change of routes.

Boo hiss! I live in Tignes.

depthjunkie, Do you know that Val d'Isere used to be called Val d'Tignes? Because Tignes is the older commune see, and there for a real village too. Val just clads it's concrete with stone and wood and pretends it's really old!

Nice post btw... I'm just on the defensive!
