Must say I'm impressed with this app. I'm on day 3 now and the tracking seems quite accurate. Though today I skied at 180kph! It seems well worth the 59p I paid for it.
Look forward to the updates for my trip to mayorhofen in February.

johnboy, I assume it means that you need to upgrade the i-phone software, which is done via i-tunes.

use iTunes to download v4.0 of the iPhones operating system. Suggest you back up your phone first, I have heard of a few instances where the upgrade has zapped everything off the phone - not nice of it!

Your iPhone will create a backup every time it syncs with iTunes. You can restore from this if the update of the OS wipes everything (happened to me more than once)
daveqpr, I'm not surprised you hit 180kph. The GPS chip in the 3G model is rubbish. The iPhone 4 has a newer GPS chip which is supposed to be better. It also doesn't help that Apple doesn't let developers have direct access to the GPS data (well that was the case last year when I was developing my own app)

Is there anyway you can disable the text/phone call capability (as in Airplane Mode) but not disabling the GPS so that I can still use the app, but not get charged for taking calls/receiving texts?

Does taking the sim card out not compromise the GPS function though? Sorry, I'm such a n00b with my iPhone!

I've got a garmin watch that I use, however, it only stores 100 laps of full data (100 miles), any more and it cuts the data down for the older activities. It means that I have to find a computer to upload to, or miss out on full data for anything done earlier in the week.
Alwyas been nervous using an iPhone app for GPS as when I tested a few apps it bled my battery dry very quickly. Might have to consider this for my next holiday, saves taking the garmin with me.

Re the battery hammerite, it automatically stops recording data when it reaches a predefined battery level. I have mine set at 20% battery left. But I have never got anywhere near that in a day.

Ah, that's quite useful. Although even with GPS now switched off I suppose that last 20% can always go through normal use. I have this fear of being stuck in the middle of nowhere after three punctures (I cycle quite a bit), run out of spares and no juice left to make the call of shame
Usually don't have that problem skiing though as a flat battery shouldn't be too big a deal as I always ski with others, and it's less likely for anything to go wrong (such as mechanicals).

Had a lot of fun with this in Les Gets, the one thing I can work out is that on the graphs you see on the phone it never shows your top speed.
I registered 74.4 mph on a video recorded run, but this peak is not shown, can someone have a look at the file and see if this is a spike or correct.
I had registered 61.6 earlier in the week on a different run and the same thing.
Apart from that it is a great app and shows well on Google maps.

Not knowing the app that well I can't say for sure, but GPS data is recorded in different ways. Sometimes the data is recorded/reported over a designated distance, as an example the data could have been recorded every 10 metres. Or some will record/report over a designated time period, for example, every 5 seconds.
GPS "smooths out" data. So whilst you hit 74.4mph on the video recording, this is a spike, on the GPS it will show the "average" top speed over 5 seconds, or 10 metres, or whichever interval it's recording data (corecoders, will be able to tell you what this is, and probably explain it better!). This is why you should never rely on your GPS/sat nav to check your speed in the car.
When I use my GPS for cycling I've reached a top speed according to my bike speedo of 49.4mph (wheel based magnet), yet on the GPS I use (Garmin Forerunner 305) it showed it as something like 47mph.

It was on the GPS that it showed the 74.4, the video is just evidence!

hammerite,
Does it then show something different when you load on garmin connect?
|

You know it makes sense.

Chattonmill, gryphea, this can be down to the same reason. The unit (whether a garmin type thing or your phone) could be measuring the data one way, but then the software analyses it in a different way (so maybe the data used for the graphs is smoothed out).
I don't use garmin connect, but do use sporttracks (training gps software for PC) and a website to log my training (http://www.runningfreeonline.com/Splash), they pretty much always show the data differently to the numbers that the unit shows, it's usually only very slight differences though.
BTW, it's worth extracting your GPX files and having a look at them in Google Earth using this...... http://www.chuffnuts.com/pistemaps/

After using it for two weeks it's a great app but as per some posts above it often gives strange top speed readings - I apparently regularly got over 200kph!!!

Chattonmill, from the vid i would guess 30 -40mph no way 70+

skimottaret, This is why I was asking, I have many readings of 55+, granted I do ski quickly and that run was an open red but I cannot be sure either way.
For perspective reasons I am 6ft 4 and the camera was on my head.
One thing I am certain of is that it was much more that 40, but not perhaps 70+!

i could be wrong and at your size perhaps you were hitting 50ish but without long boards a catsuit and a steeper pitch much higher than 60 would be hard to achieve outside a straight tuck....
it would be interesting for someone to go into a speed trap and compare to the ski tracks thingy... there is a speed gun in Courchevel, at least there used to be...
