If you read the small print with regards ski carriage they don't guarantee to carry your ski/board bag on the same flight as you or your normal hold luggage.
As witnessed by myself and 39 others Jan 2010, plane was overweight so ground crew offloaded 40 ski/board bags. A number of bods waiting to see if their bag was 1 of the 40 offloaded had put all their stuff in said bag.
All they had for two days was what they were wearing on the outbound flight!
When people complained about the 'loss' of other stuff within offloaded bags the stock answer from the reps were words to the effect that 'only skis/poles/boards should have been in the bag - therefore Crystal had no responsibility for these other items'.
Crystal arranged and paid for 2 days ski hire, and refunded ski carriage cost without question or fuss.
I've also had my ski bag checked for contents/number of skis etc, no problem - I [mostly] play by the rules.

Googled
The current most common 737 is the 737-300. Here are some very rough values, that a certain airline uses to compute manual flight plans incase the computer system fails.
Climb - 2950lbs / 15mins
Cruise - 5500lbs/hr
Descent - 600lbs / 20mins
Hold - 2650 / 30mins
Alternate - 1950 / 20mins
Min arrival fuel - 6300lbs
Recomended arrival fuel - 8300lbs
These numbers were based on a 27000lbs payload (approx 130pax plus bags)
So assume that min arrival fuel is not used and the flight lasts for 2 hours and Jet A1 is about £1.55 a gallon, I calculate the cost is about £33 per passenger at a weight all in of about 15 stone each.
If half of the passengers have skis and half are women who collectively weigh a lot less than 15 stone plus baggage, then I reckon the skis could easily be carried for free at no more cost. The fuel/ weight calculations at the price charged would easily cover the number of skis carried.
Like I said, a nice easy way to add profit to the bottom line.

Hello all
Been a long day so not been able to keep up with the whole thread unfortunately.
@Sarah
Apology accepted – I have learnt over the years that the web and email are both "toneless" ways of communicating, so it's often hard to make the point in the "right" way.
Anyway to get to your question:

All I(and many others want to do) really want to do is to pack boots in with skis in the coffin style of bag and have the boots included as part of the £30 ski equipment carriage charge not lose 6kg say of the 20kg suitcase allowance. If there's no weight limit on the ski bag then it's not a big deal to you but means a lot to the customer in terms of ease and convenience of packing. It's a reasonable request I think.

We try to review our policy every year and I think this year it didn't quite get on the agenda beyond checking we were better value than competitors. By the sounds of it, I think we need to try harder for 11/12.
Nevertheless to re-iterate the policy:
- Ski carriage is £30 up front or £40 at the airport. This is strictly for 1 pair of skis + poles OR 1 snowboard. People may "try it on" but we don't encourage that as excess baggage fees are expensive, regardless of who you're flying with.
- Boots can be taken as part of your main luggage allowance of 20kg (on Thomson Airways flights - 90% of our holidays)
- Boots can be taken in a separate bag, as long as the total baggage is not >20kg
I have our Aviation guy in touch with Thomson Airways to see what we can do about getting a "weight concept" introduced - ie factoring in the weight of the passengers as well as the weight of the luggage. I sense however that this may add an unwanted degree of embarrassment to the airport & booking experience. However if any of you can come up with better ideas then "we're all ears" as I said before.
I hope this answers all the questions people have... anyway I'm off to the pub. Have a good weekend everyone.
Cheers

sarah, I couldn't agree more - how about it Simon Cross? This could prove to be an absolute winner in terms of gaining new customers. Come on Crystal, put your head above the parapet and lead the way. You'll get a repeat booking from me if you do.
