Shimmy Alcott, Pistonheads was quite busy, mainly chatting about Saturdays events. 150 supercars driving past our front drive was a bit special especially our next door neighbour giving us a toot and a wave from his Veyron

Boredsurfing, lol - are you trying to create an example of why we need a "chat" function How much for a set of tyres for the Veyron?

But Boredsurfing, I don't know your number!!
For that matter I don't know anyones number from SH..... been a member and regular poster in here for 3years (ish), fully paid up member etc etc etc perhaps I'm still classed as a noob by the established home guard chomping on their pipes in the corner whilst nursie goes and gets them another blanket.... and they mumble about what was wrong with the good old quill and parchment!!

Boredsurfing, yes Jay and Bachi did themselves proud on Saturday..... think we were lucky that the rain held off until later in the afternoon (perhaps a little too soon for the 360 driver on the A303 afterwards).......still no word on how much it raised yet..

You lot 'chat' at work? How on earth do you get the time? I know I pop on here for ten mins whilst I'm eating my butties, but that's the only chance I get.
I'd probably use a chat function in the evening though. My cat is a rubbish conversationalist.

queen bodecia, My work is now working as and when needed on reception at the Dental Practice - between patients it can be painfully boring. I would die if I didnt have fb or SH.

queen bodecia, "chat" is why you need to be on fb aswell. Nice to chat to SH on there and you get more of an insight into them as they have more personal posts I feel.

Apres is partly boring because interesting threads which might once have been posted there are now posted here. Like this one.

Just had a look:
Ferry vs Eurotunnel
Adding 'Chat' to Snowheads
What to charge for advertising???
Why is the logo backwards
Why Hate Ryanair? Panorama BBC1 right now
The Piste now has pretty much taken on the role of Apres.

Local Radio has put the figure raised as over £10,000 for extra facilities for our new childrens hospital

Boredsurfing, Mr Veyron should have just donated a couple of tyres
Seriously - great news.
achilles, I blame the new system of counting "non apres posts" - dont want to compromise their non-apres post %. I however am an apres slut and proud of it.

Shimmy Alcott, I've now excluded it from my profile. I don't get the fascination in post count - except as a reminder that one spends to much time here.

I'd have thought that 'live chat' is a 'dead issue' now. Very few people use it on Facebook, though I see a lot of people feverishly texting on mobiles (looks taxing and tiring - have never owned a mobile myself).
The real ongoing issue in terms of Web 2.0 - interactive websites, networking etc. - is anonymity -v- non-anonymity. Trust -v- Troll. I was initially highly sceptical about Facebook, because of the murders and stalking committed with the aid of it, but it has its virtues. You can gather a community of friends you know in person, by name, and take it from there as you wish. I encounter very little rudeness on there, and I think the reason is that people know they're putting their name to their comments. If someone really upsets you (hasn't happened to me) you have the facility to block them etc. etc.

I think the combination of live chat and anonymity would be negative. Maybe that's what I should have said.

David E Goldsmith, Cant see why - if you can block people. Generally chat takes place between people who have a more personal bond that just posting on a forum, in my experience

I think it's a lot more profound than that. I'm registered with Twitter and have looked at it, but the character limit and superficiality put me off.
However, it's clearly the chosen medium for people to stream comment and observations to their contacts.
The significance of Facebook and Twitter seems to be that they cut across all cultural and speciality boundaries. You can quite happily have Facebook host any type of information and discussion network, with no upper limit to the specialism ... or populism. Twitter can supplement this with breaking news and opinion, maybe linked into a fuller discussion on Facebook.

No, it's more for quick updates rather than conversations IMHO. Apps like Live Messenger are for live chat
