At Christmas, I strained an intercostal when I fell of the Wii balance board doing the skelten bob on Mario & Sonic winter Olympics game. Recovered in time for ski trip in Feb, so not too bad, even if very silly!

i was seen sporting the start of a fantastic black eye a few days before xmas. fortunately it wasn't obtained on a piste. i decided that not only did i need to crack my temple against a brick wall, i needed to smack the back of my head against a metal pole. why? cos i was in a rush to get to the train station and i slipped on the ice on the pavement. cue fab pics at xmas lunch at the in-laws.
i also received some fantastic double takes on public transport cos i kept forgetting what it looked like and i still have a slight bump on the bone just above my eye nearly 5 months later.

sherlock235, Same happened a couple of years ago, the wife was hit from behind by a snowboarder, as she fell she hit herself in the face with her pole,(honest), and at the airport I got some real glares from other passengers as she sat there with a bust lip, and black eye

The Italian police patrol the slopes and took the wife on a skidoo with a sledge to the ambulance, all paid in with the lift pass, she was taken to a local doctor who x rayed her(120 euro) and then transferred her to Bolzano general, a fantastic hospital, but not too many English speakers there.
Bolzano was about an hour down the mountain, or 40 mins for the Italian taxi drivers (90 euro each way) so stayed in a hotel for a couple of nights and returned on TO flight, wife was transferred 3 days later by private jet as she had to be flown back laid down with a nurse, and at a lower altitude due to pressures effecting the fracture, (pilot said the flight would cost insurers £12000 !!!), and spent another week in a local hospital.
She took 5 weeks to get back to work, and really wants to go back to Italy as we were half way round the Sella Ronda, so she says she has unfinished business.
We were insured with staysure, and were pleased with how they dealt with our problems

Knee was pretty painful skiing this year, went for an x-ray and MRI scan and results as follows:
Complete ACL rupture, little in the way of medial meniscal remnant and moderate arthritic change through the knee maximum in the medial compartment, a tear in the anterior horn of the lateral menisus and loose fragments in the knee and to finish off a large osteophyte (bone growth) on the front of the knee.
It appears I've had no ACL for at least 20 years, never knew, after telling consultant about 30 days a year skiing, trialthlon jumping of cliffs etc etc he was amazed I had nver suffered any pain before this year, anyway running is now a definite no no, swimming and bike still okay and am going to have a bit of key hole to clear of the mess and remove the osteophyte, and then basically fingers crossed for next year

My son has been in the wars after a climbing avalanche and so kept me safe by causing us to cancel a winter ski trip
Think carefully where you tread even with guides when you venture up the mountain
It strikes me that more and more people seem to think off piste is safe, remember mountains can bite no matter how experinced or well prepared that you are and my son was both prepared and experienced and with a very experienced group
The injury list
concussion
broken eye socket
cuts and bruises to the face
cracked vertibrae
cracked elbow
broken hand
cracked sacrum
broken femur
the deepest purple bruising I have ever seen over large areas of his body
broken ribs
punctured lung
A big wake up a call and a definate brush with the grim reaper
Stay safe Snowheads

Luckily nothing unlike previous 3 seasons painfull mishaps.
A change of statergy from taking last minute deals I booked a string of early booking offers. I got to ski the places I wanted to but was inhibited by thought of injury spoiling following trips & letting down buddies- as a consequence I skied too defensively (& badly) & didn't enjoy it fully until I let the brakes off at the end of the season.
I must have brought bad luck to fellow chalet guests on 2 of the trips, the chalets were like casualty wards. It was like last man standing at Aspen.
It makes me think skiing might be dangerous.
It was also an eye-opener seeing how people fared with different insurance policies - some of the companies making it an epic to sort.

fatbob - a piece of clearsite held on with fixomull should help prevent the toe damage... or else you can try podiatrist for the foam they use to take pressure off diabetic feet problem areas (sorry we don't sell that one so do not know the name).

Still limping/don't have any real power in my ankle - a hidden ditch early season stopped me at full pelt, ejecting me superman-style and (a few physios guessed) I ruptured my achillies and torn/sprained a bunch of ligaments. Unfortunately, my doctor in Canada told me to walk it off weekly (at this point I was on crutches with an ankle the size of a watermelon) for a month until I gave up on the 3 hour round trip + $100 medical fee I couldn't afford. Never did get a diagnosis, went to my GP here and got given NHS Direct's number, who promptly never answer their phone.
On the plus side, the Rooney-esque air cast I got given after a couple of weeks was basically a shoddy ski boot, so after a month being laid up I got bored and whacked a ski boot on. Managed to ski through the rest of the season with it, which I figure is a form of "walking it off". Was hoping after 5-6 weeks of not skiing itd be getting better by now though...

DaveC, sounds like a break in there to me, or unresolved damage (scar tissue, etc.). Go to A and E, for x-rays at least and preferably some NMR or something and then to a very good physio or chiropractor.

hi I am new to the forum. Skied twice in Les Gets this year. January trip went off ok. March trip was a disasater. Third day I was stationary at the side of the slope speaking to my ski instructor when a large French man ploughed into me at speed from behind and dragged me down the slope for about 50 metres. Unfortunately my ski instructor allowed him to ski off after speaking to him. I was then asked if I could stand which I could albeit with difficulty and told to climb on ski instructors SHOULDERS. When I objected he told me that was the only way toget down to where my skis had landed. To be honest i was in such pain in my bottom, shoulder and head (although thankfully I was wearing a helmet otherwise I don't think I would be here) I did what I was told. I just closed my eyes till he stopped skiing. I had difficulty putting on my right ski and the ski instructor treated me as if I was stupid. Skied a few turns and then regrouped and he asked how I was I said I was in pain in my bottom, shoulder and head and petrified of other skiers. HIs answer: take aspirin at lunch and ski immediately behind me for the rest of the run. So we set off again and after five or six turns my right leg would not do what I wanted it to do and I was heading towards the trees. so I deliberately fell down... and at the same time felt the pain in my right thigh that told me my femur was broken. It was broken in several places including the neck (hip). I was helicoptered off the slope and operated on a few hours later. Spent 10 days in Thonon hospital before being private medivacced to UK and a further week in hospital. Doctor said fractures caused by initial collision but ski instructors shoulder ride etc exarcerbated the displacement. Now have metal rods (34 cm and 9 cm) in hip and thigh and a scar 30cm long from hip....not the holiday souvenir I was looking for. Fractures not showing any signs of healing yet and may have to undergo bone grafts to get healed. Ski school (ESF) not responding to emails asking them for a copy of the accident report. Anyone know if I can get data from lift operators or from medical centres to try to trace the bloke who crashed into me? Only detail I know is that his friend died on a slope in Courchevel in late Jan or early Feb 2010 as one of the girls in my ski group overheard him tell this to the ski instructor

edelskibuddy, Sorry to here of your accident but realistically I don't think you've much chance of tracing the offender and probably even less of successfully pursuing an action against him. ESF on the other hand seem to have been rather less than professional about handling the incident and if you have a medical opinion that the instructor's actions caused you futher injury it may be worth talking to your insurers about pursuing him/the ESF. Pisteurs (i.e the rescue guys) may hold the accident report.
