Spikyhedgehog, Axsette #2 is there this week for a total cost (i.e transport accommodation, lift pass, food, only booze on top) of £550.
The trip does involve 24 hours each way on a coach but still remarkably good value I thought. Reports via txt msg seem to indicate she's having a great time, snow conditions excellent but very cold.
For familiy trips I always budget £1k per person per week to include everything. Usually comes in a little under this, but certain trips have gone over. Most of the argument above seems to centre on whether food or booze should be included. Since for me eating out and drinking are part of the holiday I include the cost as I don't eat out very much when home.
I'm sure ski trips like other holidays can be organised on the cheap, but I don't want to stay in a B&B, eat sandwiches for lunch, and buy all my drinks at the supermarket. If that makes me a bad person in the eyes of the more parsimonious, then ask me if I'm bovvered

B&B, waste of time. Self catering is best. It has the neat advantage that my cooking is better than almost any restaurant I've ever been to, so I eat absolutely top class food, for next to nowt, while the rest of you are dejectedly sending back your steaks for being a bit overdone and waiting 45 minutes for the disinterested waiting staff to offer you another beer.

January = Les Deux Alpes for 1 week. Luxury Chalet is £514 inc flights, transfers and ski carriage. LIft pass is about £170. £20 to park at airport. Approx £70 spends for occasional lunch and apres ski. Total = £774
March = Mayrhofen for 1 week. Guesthouse. £370 inc flights, transfers and ski carriage. Ift pass is about £170. £20 to park at airport. Approx £200 spends for dinners and apres ski. Total = £760
Once you add them up, there's not much to choose between the 2 - just a different style of holiday.
I tend to work to a ceiling of about £1600 per week for me and my partner all in. Sometimes go over, sometimes come in under (my first ski trip to La Ros came in at about £500 all in - but i was trying to keep costs low because i had had to outlay to buy all the clothing and gear!). But it's always there or thereabouts.

Nothing to do with being bad, or good. I'm not bovvered if you can afford to buy a nice lunch every day - good for you. But not being able to do so doesn't make me parsimonious, either. Let's drop the value judgements and sneers, shall we?

I build up sufficient points each year to buy a return flight to Munich.
Train transfer to Worgl 62 Euro return. Taxi top Niederau 15 each way, total 92 Euro.
B&B + tax, 30 X 7, 210 Euros per week.
Day cost 10 Eu X 7, 70 Euros per week
Evening cost 20 x 7, 140 Euros per week
Season Lift pass, 216 Euro, divided by 3 weeks, 70 Euro per week
Total 532 Euros, £488.
I can do this quite a bit cheaper by staying HB in a hotel over a disco, saving 105 Euros, but I choose not to.
Because I go back to the same resort each year, (I do go to other places), it pays to buy a season pass. By staying in the same guesthouse, you can normally arrange to leave a few pairs of skis, and other bits and pieces.

Lechbob, -only kidding - I think if I had kept spreadsheets and the like, I would be horrified - my pension pot could have been considerably larger. But hey ho - in 30 years time I will be able to tell my fellow in-mates in the rest home about the time I skied back from the Mooserwirt in the moon light after listening to a band over several bottles of Weizen beers -

I usually take the equivalent of £100 spending money with me on my ski holiday to cover things like après ski and soup/glühwein on the mountain.
However, it costs me about £100 per week (after all domestic bills have been paid) just to live at home, £40 per week petrol to get to and from work, £40 per week groceries, £20 per week misc spending money. So in effect, the holiday spending money is not an 'extra' to be budgeted for.
However, I have gone way over budget for my ski holiday this year. Cost of holiday itself (TO 3* HB hotel, inc. flights, transfers, lift pass, ski carriage) £650. But I have also spent £160 on new boots, £200 on skis, £100 on new clothing and still need to buy some poles. Oopsie!

Axsman, you were the first to use a judgemental word (parsimonious http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Parsimonious) to characterize people with a different spending pattern from yourself. Absolutely nobody, as far as I can recall, had made any such judgement about anybody else's choices, and I didn't either.

When I say 'rare' I mean 'just walk it through a warm room'. The Frenchies never seem to understand that when I say it, I mean it

My next holiday will be 8 1/2 days off-piste skiing in the Haute Maurienne with guide for 6 of the days/
Easyjet flights (including £37 for ski carriage) £111
Hotel 9 nights Half board £420
Lift passes £150
Guides fee (including being driven about in his van) £344
Airport transfers £40
Total= £1,065 pus drinks and lunches - say £1,200 per person = £140 per day of skiing
Second ski holiday is very similar but we are taking the guide with us and the area is more expensive:
Montgenevre ski holiday (Milky way area + day in Serre Chevallier + day in Puy St Vincent)
8 ½ days skiing
Easyjet flights (including £37 for ski carriage) £111
Hotel 9 nights B&B £520
Lift passes (9 days) £207
Airport transfers (taxi) £85
Guide fee and use of van £344
Guide's hotel and lift pass £73
Total £1,330 + lunches and drinks - say £1,450 per person = £170 per day of skiing
|
|
|
|
|
|
6 person chalet 360 euro ( 4 in chalet ) = 90 euro each = £84 each roughly ( booked and deposit paid )
eurotunnel free Tesco clubcard = £0.00
Fuel Diesel 4 in car = £50 each approx
tolls = £45 each
ski hire = £40 each
lift pass = £160 each
own boots ( priceless )
Total per person £379 per person six days skiing in March 2010 obviously food and drink on top .
even if fuels and tolls a bit more i still think less than £400 per person
