Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Spikyhedgehog, Axsette #2 is there this week for a total cost (i.e transport accommodation, lift pass, food, only booze on top) of £550.

The trip does involve 24 hours each way on a coach but still remarkably good value I thought. Reports via txt msg seem to indicate she's having a great time, snow conditions excellent but very cold.

For familiy trips I always budget £1k per person per week to include everything. Usually comes in a little under this, but certain trips have gone over. Most of the argument above seems to centre on whether food or booze should be included. Since for me eating out and drinking are part of the holiday I include the cost as I don't eat out very much when home.

I'm sure ski trips like other holidays can be organised on the cheap, but I don't want to stay in a B&B, eat sandwiches for lunch, and buy all my drinks at the supermarket. If that makes me a bad person in the eyes of the more parsimonious, then ask me if I'm bovvered Madeye-Smiley

B&B, waste of time. Self catering is best. It has the neat advantage that my cooking is better than almost any restaurant I've ever been to, so I eat absolutely top class food, for next to nowt, while the rest of you are dejectedly sending back your steaks for being a bit overdone and waiting 45 minutes for the disinterested waiting staff to offer you another beer.

Since I don't cook at home ( apart from breakfast fry ups Madeye-Smiley ) I certainly don't intend to spend time on holiday cooking. Fair enough if you enjoy it but it's not for me. Eating out wise I like a mix of Pizza's , Fondue, Other alpine cheese laden specialities, and yes , steaks. Have had some great meals in resorts and not always for a lot more than you'd pay in the UK.

Not having to wash up afterwards is nice too. Toofy Grin

January = Les Deux Alpes for 1 week. Luxury Chalet is £514 inc flights, transfers and ski carriage. LIft pass is about £170. £20 to park at airport. Approx £70 spends for occasional lunch and apres ski. Total = £774

March = Mayrhofen for 1 week. Guesthouse. £370 inc flights, transfers and ski carriage. Ift pass is about £170. £20 to park at airport. Approx £200 spends for dinners and apres ski. Total = £760

Once you add them up, there's not much to choose between the 2 - just a different style of holiday.

I tend to work to a ceiling of about £1600 per week for me and my partner all in. Sometimes go over, sometimes come in under (my first ski trip to La Ros came in at about £500 all in - but i was trying to keep costs low because i had had to outlay to buy all the clothing and gear!). But it's always there or thereabouts.

I build up sufficient points each year to buy a return flight to Munich.
Train transfer to Worgl 62 Euro return. Taxi top Niederau 15 each way, total 92 Euro.
B&B + tax, 30 X 7, 210 Euros per week.
Day cost 10 Eu X 7, 70 Euros per week
Evening cost 20 x 7, 140 Euros per week
Season Lift pass, 216 Euro, divided by 3 weeks, 70 Euro per week

Total 532 Euros, £488.

I can do this quite a bit cheaper by staying HB in a hotel over a disco, saving 105 Euros, but I choose not to.

Because I go back to the same resort each year, (I do go to other places), it pays to buy a season pass. By staying in the same guesthouse, you can normally arrange to leave a few pairs of skis, and other bits and pieces.

I usually take the equivalent of £100 spending money with me on my ski holiday to cover things like après ski and soup/glühwein on the mountain.

However, it costs me about £100 per week (after all domestic bills have been paid) just to live at home, £40 per week petrol to get to and from work, £40 per week groceries, £20 per week misc spending money. So in effect, the holiday spending money is not an 'extra' to be budgeted for.

However, I have gone way over budget for my ski holiday this year. Cost of holiday itself (TO 3* HB hotel, inc. flights, transfers, lift pass, ski carriage) £650. But I have also spent £160 on new boots, £200 on skis, £100 on new clothing and still need to buy some poles. Oopsie! Very Happy

alex_heney, OK Guilty as charged. However if I was 'sneering' it was at those who might consider me a bad person (i.e. who might sneer at me) for being willing to spend around £1k per person per trip on skiing. A figure which is pretty much in line with the majority of posts above.

I was not targetting any particular individual. I guess the cap must fit pam w, who felt the need to reply with a sneer.

Isn't sneer a great word? wonder what it derives from.

Hey as far as expense goes, each to his/her own. I don't spend much on dining out in the UK, and I don't really do summer holidays any more. Nor do I own a place in the mountains. So when I go skiing it's about more than just sliding down a hill, and I like to feel free to eat and drink out. If anyone has a problem with that I send a huge sneer in their direction. Axsman, you were the first to use a judgemental word (parsimonious http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Parsimonious) to characterize people with a different spending pattern from yourself. Absolutely nobody, as far as I can recall, had made any such judgement about anybody else's choices, and I didn't either.

pam w, Re read my post. It started with 'If that makes me a bad person in the eyes of..." So I only classed as parsimonious those who might consider me a bad person for my spending pattern.

You chose to respond (with a sneer wink ) so clearly you must feel tarred by that brush. However it was not I who put you in that pigeon hole, you jumped in all by yourself.

Interesting to hear peoples thoughts on spending money! I personally really love to buy my lunch on the mountain, I find theres nothing better than a hot meal and a cold beer (or desperado Toofy Grin ) up the mountain, but have travelled with people who prefer to bring food with them. The trade off for me is that when cash is tight the nights out become nights in to keep my hot lunches!!

Thankfully managed to save up this year (no summer holiday!) so theres cash for both in serre chevalier in a week and a half Cool

Just out of interest, do you guys who bring food manage to find somewhere indoors to eat it, or is it normally a quick chair lift snack?
