Lots of heavy snow showers in Newcastle - snow lying on roads in city centre. The best conditions are on the rooftops, especially the higher ones. Further snow forecast for today and the rest of the week. All hotels have vacancies ! No signs of gritters as yet.

Not much settling in Hertfordshire at the moment - but then it has only just started.
mainly rain and sleet last 24 hours in SE - it was noticeable how the snow showers over Lincolnshire turned to rain as they crossed the Wash. There was some warmer air embedded over the SE yesterday/last night. You could see how the temperature went up in some places as the evening wore on. At this time of year it takes a little while for everything to cool down properly (the seas are relatively warm, and it's been quite mild recently), so we'd need this weather to continue to bring everything down to snow levels. It looks like that's what will happen with a trough expected to cross into the East later. With snow/sleet showersand the easterly wind cooling things down throughout the day, as it starts getting dark, we could start to see snow starting to settle and if the trough moves through then, there could be a reasonable amount (for this part of the country). That could coincide with rush hour (like it did two years ago) - if you go home via the M11 you might want to consider leaving early .
Overnight Tuesday night there's a small cold front expected to come in from the east which could bring more snow, followed by a trough. If snow's already settled before that, we could see more as temperatures should be being lowered. Thursday they were forecasting a warm front to move through bringing milder air, but that's now been changed to an occluded front. If the lower air's been chilled, then the milder air with move above it and it could mean a reasonable dumping of snow. If the air has not been sufficiently chilled it could mean rain instead - though that could mean ice problem overnight.
Very difficult to forecast more than a few hours ahead in this situation (the details anyway), and the presence and timings of the fronts and troughs could very easily change (note the Thirsday change already). The main thing needed to bring snow for the SE is a drop in temperature (esp. the dew points) and though that looks on the cards, it's a bit of a borderline situation. So if you want snow, you'll want the temps to drop, if you don't you'll want them to hold steady or rise.
Two places you might like to keep an eye on:

An upper air trough (basically a high level area of unstable air) is set to cross the SE this evening which should bring a fair bit of precipitation. This could very well be snow - in fact as it'll be coming in on easterly winds (the wind directly is now shifting more to the east), then it's looking very likely that it will be. Keep an eye on the radar pictures out in the channel, this afternoon.

Distinct n/s line of (snow) showers moving west across the country and has just cleared London. It stretches from north of the Humber to the south coast, but is not very thick - so I doubt it'll leave much unless there's already snow lying. It's very noticeable on both radar and satellite pictures.

rockyrobin, hard to say - I'm not experienced at what (borderline) conditions are necessary for snow in Scotland, hopefully brian will be on here at some time. I don't know but guess that there may have been some more snow over the weekend, looking at the charts? The winds for Scotland look to be mainly from N (both NE & NW) for most of the week - though they are quite slack at times as HP builds to the NE midweek. Current conditions in Aviemore are rain and 8C so it's not looking great - but I haven't seen the dewpoints.
