Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

In my experience in Verbier, which isn't going to be typical for all the alps, the real estate itself is too valuable to change hands frequently - much of it being owned by (originally) local families.

So the land owners rent the places (cafes, restaurants, bars, shops etc) out for big bucks. Over, say, 5 years, they see their tenants making loads of money, greed kicks in... they turf the tenants out and try and run the place themselves. Having no experience and absolutely NO concept of customer service they soon start to lose money and find themselves working too hard, so they let their cousins run the place. It becomes a nightmare so said family looks for new tenants and increases the rent. This happens on 5-10 year cycles and is influenced by different generations coming to maturity / dying.

Chalet boy is the only way to go in the alps if you can't afford to bum and you want to maximise your ski time.

The Swiss will do anything for money. I don't know whether it stems from the fact that in the past the country was quite poor (bit like the Blairs) and it is something deep in the psyche.

There are a lot of places for sale at the moment and I would have thought the OP would stand a chance of renting something. Lots of sales falling through as people can't get the finance.

I always thought Vincent who runs the Swallow Bar in Vaujany had it pretty well organised. He would snowboard all day; chill out a bit then open his bar up at about 6. He was targetting the post-apres ski market... Don't think he's ever going to get rich, but some elements of Vaujany are almost like a socialist republic so he has a pretty good life doing it

I was only joking Pam, 35 years flipping omelettes with a mountain view is probably much more fun than been sat at my desk looking at 3 screens all day!

Hi Paulio

Perhaps you could do what I did. I bought a taxi 24 years ago in loch lomond area. I wa sin my 20's and all my overheads were the price of a car and ongoing monthly car insurance (to get started). Before that I had a pub (at 24) so I can talk about the "service industry".

Dont think about running a big opperation before you can get a feel (even if you dont own it). It is too hard work and you wont get any free time.

Consider the posibility of a mobile snack bar. IE lika burget bar. Outlay would be the market value of the trailer. eg £8k. Make sure there is a turnover in vans so you could always resell before you buy.

Prior to that, investigate the area to see if such a thing is allowed.

Ther are many threads on the price of food "rip off is a constant theme". Set yourself up as a cheap hot-dog and soft drink outlet. The food is easy to prepare and keep. Also some prepepared snackboxes to take away (see any food place at any ikea). Call the place the pit stop. Happy

After you are established, get a part time worker to cover for you to ski a couple of hours in the quiet time. Happy

Cheers
Bob
