Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

comprex, the "sufficient strength" part is the part we differ on then I guess... the muscles should generally have sufficient strength for recreational skiing I'd say.... but some of us have muscle imbalance/neglect or poor firing sequences... The Staatliche I have skied with spend a lot of time on learning to "activate" at will muscles to stabilise the ski in our heavy off-piste conditions... That I would say is more 'technique' than muscle strength issues though....

My physio specialises in that stuff, he works a lot with athletes that have problems - eg Aussie rules guys with bad backs... very "strong" but either unable to activate certain muscles(he had one not long back like this) and so compensating with other muscles - which is not great... or with poor firing sequences... he then trains them to use the muscles correctly... our top spinal surgeon uses him for rehab work... he is really very very good... When I had problems in Ireland he totally fixed in a week what the Irish physio had been playing with for 6 months...

little tiger, I think we're actually in agreement if you notice that my words were "significant strength" in the context of being proportional to the other muscles in the system.

The firing sequence bit has been one of my hobby horses on here and elsewhere. If I read another thread on "training up quads" to ski I think I'll jump out the glass window in frustration.

comprex, yep.... leg extensions are a major bug bear for me.... I seem to recall suggesting squats on or lunges onto or even standing on a dynadisc to someone for working on the knee area and being soundly poopooed.... yet when Fastman's mother had her knee replaced guess what they had her do? and how shocked was her physio when they discovered she had one at home?

An instructor friend and I just rolling eyes when people tell us that they must need stronger legs because their thighs ache when they ski.... I've seen 86 year old Frank skiing and racing and he has pretty small quads!!!

I gave a lift pass to 80-year-old woman this week. She had spindly little old lady legs, but I'm told she skis the nuts off everyone else on the hill.

Looks like a change of boots may well have solved that problem for me...

Not entirely, not generally in the back seat, but the forward lean on previous boots was such that my (short) achilles were at full stretch just standing, making flexing rather painful and killing just standing around (e.g. in bars) - result was thighs taking the strain off them, resulting in painful thighs. Not had many days in the new boots yet, but looking promising

eng_ch, that is what I meant by a stance thingy... I had similar issues due to wrong ramp angle... not sore thighs but I was never where I wanted to be on the skis - felt like I was toppling forward all the time.... turns out I was - my heels actually struggled to contact boot sole properly if I flexed ankles so I felt all wonky and did weird things to compensate... (there was a lot more on 1 foot which could never get decent foot stability during a turn as the ankle would just fold forcing me to tighten all leg muscles to maintain any stability in the ankle)....

"stance" means a lot more to me than "being back seat" (or not)... Remember when I started skiing with my favourite instructor he had me do a heap of flexing and tipping in bare feet and boots with pants rolled above the knee in ski school locker room... He was determined to understand how MY body worked without the boot/ski there and then with... so he could get me closest to that... for us all of that (and things like hip alignment) go into "stance" It was him picked my leg length difference and foot problems... by looking at "stance"
