I am also surprised that K2 brand is unknown to OP.
Look in any ski magazine or catalogue and K2 often feature.
Testing them may depend on where you ski. European countries often concentrate on stocking their home brands.
I hesitate to generalise about the brand or any brand. Look at individual models. Reading some reviews to narrow your selection may be worthwhile.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

shoogly, i've seen the Moto Cross isn't good off piste so I think i'll be avoiding it .... even though there are some good deals about.
Latchigo, i've checked the hire shops in Bad Gastein where i'll be going and they do stock K2 skis. Whether they have them on test or not, I don't know. I expect so. I'll e-mail them and find out.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'd say the xplorer is just as quick turning as the recon and actually a wee bit more forgiving... that's what i felt anyway. Both skis are capable of high speed carving as well and the xplorer actually has a larger sidecut, but with a slightly different shape which makes it easier to ski in soft snow. It's more stable and more fun and just as turny as the recon so i don't really see why you'd get the recon over the xplorer. All personal though so others might have different thoughts.

Interesting to hear this - I skied the Recon last season and really liked it on piste, but felt I wouldn't mind a bit more float in powder; then again, I end up spending at least half of my time on piste on most ski trips, so I wouldn't want something too unwieldly there. So do you reckon that the Xplorer is as responsive (or very nearly) on piste as the Recon? If so, my decision might be almost made....

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

cps26, everyone is different, but imo, yes. Sure, someone coming from a true pair of carvers or slalom/GS skis would notice, but i can't tell much between the recon and xplorer - imo, K2 know that the recon has a very loyal following and so it would make no sense to drop that model. The Outlaw has gone way up to 92mm underfoot so they needed to introduce a ski that is between those two.
Steve likes them!!!!
