Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Quite possibly -10cm up on the hill.

It got warm and then it started pissing down and hasn't really stopped all afternoon / evening. It's currently chucking it down.

Miserable with a capital M.

So here's two more from yesterday when it was dry, sunny and glorious.

And it kept snowing all through the night.

13cm in the past 24hrs at MQ.

Much more up top.

Good turns today. Limited terrain though. Wind was howling for a time so only Ace #3 double was open. Then the wind died down and they opened up the King Hooded Triple. Much better.

Roped off (most of) the mountain from the King Bell area down due to lack of snow. More like lack of clue.

Tokyu. Japanese for 'couldn't run a bath'

The run back to the base of the quad was boot top all the way, hardly any ice scratch. Great turns.

Still snowing. Tommorrow will be great.

Friday's rain left all the Zao pistes frozen/rutted this morning but snow started falling about 10a.m. and by 2p.m. there was some good skiing to be found.....forecasts of high winds, heavy snow and low temps kept the punters away. A few broken bones for ski patrol to carry off the mountain.......not the best conditions for doing kickers etc. Tomorrow should be better.....as long as the snow keeps falling. Next week's forecast isn't good but the weekend should be ok.

This is why we live in the Niseko Resort Area.

Today was epic.

Deep, light and untracked for most of the day. No lift lines, just good times.

Mike, I put a post on SnowJapan but I thought I'd put one here too in case the moderators think my SnowJapan post breached their guidelines.

A group of 6 of us will be in Niseko for a week from 7 Feb. We're skiing 3.5 weeks weeks in 3 resorts all up with 10 days in Nozawa.

We want to get a lessons on the first couple of days of the week and then maybe one later in the week. I saw on here somewhere that you are an instructor? What compnay do you work for? How can we organise to get lessons with you?

I arrive in Tokyo on the 8th of January and will be keen to get skiing after a few days looking around. I have tried to get cheap accommodation around Nagano without much luck, I have now heard that it is the Japanese holidays.

What is it like on Hokkaido, is it busy? any advice on places to stay would be most helpful I am going to stay in Japan for just over one month.

Light and dry.

While I was devouring a bacon & egg roll at Niseko Pizza the wind started howling, blowing the freshly fallen powder all over the place.

Walked up to the Alpen quad around 8 to see a scattering of people lining up for first chair and the mountain staff making their way up the hill via cat not lift.

This didn't auger well for making tracks all over the mountain. Made calls to mates at Hanazono and Niseko Village and the message was the same. Chairs on hold due to high winds.

At 8:30 the Ace #1 double chair started loading and the steadily growing pack was moving.

Made one run to the right of the black run with no name and was nip deep.

20 minutes later I was back at the top of the chair ready to rendezvous with Glen. He'd driven up to take shots from the road.

Think we made the most of the limited terrain on offer and the small window of sunlight.

Not content with 20-30 minutes waiting on line and a 5 minute chair ride for a couple of hundred metres of vert I decided to go back to hiking the hill.

Walked up to 'windy corner' and dropped into Konayuki. It wasn't pretty. Wind scoured hard pack one turn, gut deep heavy slab drifts the next. The trees weren't much better.

The wind has died down this evening, so if the upper lifts do run tomorrow the smart money will be on wind protected areas like Rinkan for the best turns.

Beyond the boundary rope is not recommended.

More like 90cm up on the hill!

The peak opened for the first time this season and BIG WEDNESDAY was on.

Did one quick lap beside the Hanazono #3 chair. Very good.

Then while many were waiting for the peak gate to open, Greg Heptonstall, Tracy Lenard and I opted for laps through Gate 4 back down to the base of the Hanazono #3 chair.

And what a good decision. I'm sure the people who hiked the peak in the sunshine had a ball, but we were going for quantity and quality.

The snow was deep, light and consistent. There was still quite a bit fo shrubery lurking just beneath the snow pack ready to take you down but I think the pics speak for themselves.

Greg just beyond the rope

Tracy just beyond the rope

Greg just beyond the rope

Yours truly just beyond the rope. The one that got away.

After 4 laps we traversed further round the mountain away from the ski area.

The snow got deeper and lighter and the views were immense.

Further round from the 'cornice' there was some big wind loading and scouring going on with steep drop offs to flat landings. Potentially very dangerous in low light conditions.

That negotiated we opened up the throttle down to Jackson's

Got off the King Triple chair, excitement building, and headed for what I thought would be over the head shots through Gate 5.

The reality? On my head shots as I punched through the wind scoured surface, through the wind packed pow and into the tree roots still lurking in the snowpack.

This was an upside down storm with better and lighter snow conditions at the base of the mountain.

The peak was closed due to high avalanche risk and there was avalanche debris in the face above Hanazono.

Looked like slow moving surface layer of 40-60cm of wind packed new snow had released on the January 9-10 surface hoar layer. Doubtful if it would have resulted in burial, more likely leg trauma.

Approx. 20 m start width, finishing approx. 150-200m wide. Ran from peak to treeline. Roughly where the traverse line would be from Gate 4.

Tracy made the most of the variable conditions

Had lunch at Ezo in Niseko Village. Average burger, terrible bloody mary and poor, slow service.
