Come on people try a bit harder.
I skied in both Crest Voland and Gressoney this season. One place that I hadn't been to before was Le Corbier in the Maurienne.
Would have gone to Villard de Lans too if conditions had been better.

Champorcher in Aosta valley, Italy is good. Very small (40km of piste I think) but good for a day trip, or even halfday trip.

Mike Pow, Nearly went to Turner mtn but was told it only opened weekends/powder Fridays. Near Libby?
Gulmarg I'd guess has the potential to be the best resort in the world.

Fatbob,
Yep that's the one. Open every day around the holidays. Had opening day there in December 2002 and it was epic.
All I've read about Gulmarg it sounds and looks fantastic, but with the frequent closures puts it in the same league as Las Lenas, Argentina for me.

Glencoe.
Most under rated resort in the world.
If you aint ever rode the fly paper or spring run you aint lived. Standing at the top of them you feel your the only person in the world! Natural terrain features that rival backcountry areas and a ride anywhere style. Plus the beautiful views!
Also has the worlds best blue run in the main basin. Not very long but the haggis trap is the scariest thing any begginer could come across! Although this year there was so much snow that it was buried for the whole season so not quite as bad!
If you aint been (and shame on you if you live in scotland and you aint been) get there next year.
In fact walk up this week and you'll still see full width runs to have a play in! (just the tows have stopped )

That post was really just to stir things up.
Most scottish skiers (based in or around aviemore) would say we over egg Glencoe.
It's not called the mighty one for nothing.

I think you mean Lanslevillard (ie best and most central of 2 villages in Val Cenis - unless you want a larger village- so possibly more nightlife). Good place for off piste if you have a guide - nobody else skis it. French village feel - French family resort and very cheap. And you have option of other small resorts nearby.
My choice - Montgenevre which is very pretty and the best (and the only French) part of the Milky Way area. Much, much nicer than the Sestrierre end. Some very good off piste which hardly anyone skis.

I have stayed in Sestola Italy, part of the Cimone ski area, a couple of times.
The skiing is pretty good for begineers & intermediates and the food is superb and costs a lot less than France

Pila may be better known now but still great location for a weekend trip flying in to Turin or pref Milan. Or you cld try Ponte De Legno for local skiing and link to Passo Tonale. St Martin de Belleville is perhaps the perfect small resort linking into a massive area (3V).
Anyone ever stayed at Lanersbach or Vorderlanesrbach near Mayrhofen and Hintertux Glacier? Wld love to hear of any recommendations for there as sounds terrific and again quaint village linking to decent ski area.

Agreed. Not that many skiiers have heard of Montgenevre unless there obsessed and frequent such forums as SnowHeads or have been to Milky way or Serre Chevalier. However it has increased in popularity from what Ive heard with British skiiers. I love the place personally and will regularly go back there in the future. Because it has a good snow record, good atmosphere, a range of different terrain and near Serre Chevalier and the Milky way are definate assets.

My favorite Norwegian Resorts:
Kvitfjell
http://www.kvitfjell.no/Alpine+%26+Snowboard/615/
Hafjell
http://www.hafjell.no/en/
is allsow the best MTB resort in Norway
http://www.hafjell.no/sommer/
and
http://www.hafjellfreeride.no/index_eng.aspx
Hemsedal
http://www.skistar.com/hemsedal/english/index.app
http://www.hemsedal.com/
Oppdal

Narvik
http://www.narvikfjellet.no/
or in english
http://www.skinarvik.no/default_eng.htm
Geilo
http://www.skigeilo.com/
These are some main resorts in Norway with more or less guaranteed good snow quality, stabile clima, good piste grooming and good lift infrastructure.
They have different qualities, but they all big enough to keep even god skiers entertained at least some weeks, and you not lost as an newbeginner in any of theme even if some are les fitted for newbeginners.
This is my ranking of these resorts(best first):
Best for new beginners and children families: Geilo, Hafjell, Hemsedal and Kvitfjell.
Best ski schools for group lessons and new beginners: Geilo, Hafjell and Hemsedal.
Best groomed expert slopes: Kvitfjell and Narvik
Best gromed slopes in general: Hafjell, Kvitfjell, Geilo, Hemsedal, Oppdal
Best for hard core offpiste: Narvik, Oppdal, Hemsedal, Kvitfjell
Good moderate offpiste powder crusing: Oppdal, Hemsedal(just after snow-fall and not in weekends), Geilo(if you good enough to ski in the wood and like short turns), Kvitfjell.
Shortest lift queue: Less then 1 minute: Narvik, Oppdal, Kvitfjell. 1 - 5 minuttes in weekends and high season on main lifts: Geilo, Hemsedal, Hafjell
Most high meters: Narvik, Kvitfjell, Hafjell, Hemsedal, Oppdal and then Geilo.
Bigest ski area: Oppdal, Hemsedal, Geilo, Hafjell, Kvitfjell, Narvik.
Most spectacular view: Narvik, Kvitfjell, Hemsedal, Oppdal, Geilo.
Most spectacular and exposed skiing: Narvik, Hemsedal, Oppdal, Kvitfjell.
Steepest skiing: Kvitfjell, Narvik, Hemsedal, Oppdal, Geilo, Hafjell.
Best fun parks: Hemsedal, Hafjell, Geilo, Oppdal.
Most stable snow conditions: Geilo and Kvitfjell, the rest are allsow excellent, but Oppdal and Narvik have coast climate; that means more snow, but allsow more unstabile.
Best on artificial snow: Hafjell and Kvitfjell, then Hemsedal.
Best piste Grooming: Kvitfjell and Kvitfjell (probably the best in the world) then Geilo and Hemsedal.
Best skiing in overall: Oppdal, Hemsedal, Kvitfjell, Hafjell, Geilo, Narvik.
Best afterski and party: Hemsedal (the Norwegian answer to Ibiza), Hafjell (cheap beer) and Geilo(allmost no afteski but great night life in weekends).
Best shoping: Hafjell (Lillehammer), Narvik (in fact a city), Hemsedal (cool), Geilo (posh),Oppdal (you get what you need++)
Most to do besides skiing and geting drunk: Hafjell, Geilo, Narvik, Hemsedal.
Best Resturants and Food: Geilo, Hafjell, Hemsedal.
These are just some Norvegian resorts. Belive it or not, its over 60 alpine resorts in Norway. All on my list, except for Narvik is quite big in
turnover. So if you digg fresh powder, and don't have to high demands on infrastructure and action besides skiing, can handle steep T-bars, or want a skiresorts for yourself, its a lot of grate places in Norway to go besides the big main resorts. The Snow is in general dry in Norway.

A second vote for red mountain, in Europe I have fond memories of Jahorina in Bosnia, good snow, cheap and empty!

Another vote for Schweitzer. We were out there for a few days in Feb and I rate it a better place than Fernie.
Also Castle Mountain and Fortress Mountains in Alberta.
