Today was amazing. bluebird with a nice powder layer ( only 5-10cm ). lower mountain has suffered from some rain, so wasn't worth skiing, but the alpine is nice.

We have had a lot of clear skies and no snow. It was perfect for the recent racing events we had (Canada Cup and the World Cup)
The weather finally seems to be changing with a forecast of snow this weekend. Fingers crossed.
Otherwise the mountains are still in good shape, just a lot of moguls.......

Quick update, the last few days have been excellent with fresh snow, on Saturday morning 19cm from the night before, all in all 34cm over the last few days. It freshened up the mountain, what it needed after a brief dry spell.

Plenty of precipitation in next weeks forecast, however the freezing level is all over the place. Hopefully it doesn't get as high as predicted. This season we have been blessed with low freezing levels, ie snow to the valley, lets hope it stays that way.

The Sunday paper (Times) is saying Whistler is getting very slushy on the lower slopes, any truth in this?

Only in the last 800m of the ski out. All the good skiing is at 1500m and up, so it matters not.

Matthew Way, Its the time of year. Have been now the last 5 years first two weeks in April and will be back again in two weeks time. It never even enters my mind to ski down to village in afternoons. The snow is so good alpine that its not worth ending a day in slush near the village. Plenty of download opportunities to avoid this.

garywilk,
Thanks
The forecast looks like getting colder and plenty of snow to come so shouldn't be a problem anyway.
Where do you recommend I take the kids when the vis is bad?

to be honest kids dont seem to mind the lack of visibility and anyway once you are in the trees visibility is always better. Are they booked into ski school and what are their ages? Main thing to remember is to keep them warm they will always find plenty to do on the slopes. If they are not in ski school then I recommend it. Instructors are great and can do far more with them that you would imagine. Hopefully where you are staying has a pool but you can also try the zip wire and the snowmobiling, snowshoeing, indoor rock climbing, a pool and fitness centre, spas and ziptrek eco tours take a lok at this page for more general info http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/todo/winter/index.htm
Depending on their ages there are all types of lessons to be had from basic ski camp to ride tribe and even park special lessons. All on the same site above

Here's a delayed update on conditions in Whistler: I'd have posted this yesterday, but for a problem with the internet service in the condo!
Whistler: 6.45 pm, Sunday 16th March
It’s snowing in the village now. Big fat flakes falling from a densely clouded sky, and every prospect of this going on all night. It could be good tomorrow…..
The Acacias hit town last night at about 8.30 after the long haul from Leeds-Bradford via Amsterdam. This morning the sun was shining and this provided an ideal start to the annual trip across the pond - getting the ski legs working down the long cruisers from the Solar Coaster lift on Blackcomb.
Unfortunately, it didn’t stay that way. The weather front started to push in mid-morning providing distinctly murky conditions mid-mountain. After lunch this dictated a retreat to the trees through Arthur’s choice – maybe this wasn’t the best option for a first day, since the spaces between the trees were a minefield of big icy bumps. Still, no untoward alarms – just aching muscles at the end of the day and a perfect excuse to take on some muscle relaxant.
Monday 17th March
Well, it looks like it snowed all night, leaving about 10 cm fresh powder on the hill. Even some new snow down in the village . Looking up from the base, the cloud layer still looked pretty low, so it was another assault on Blackcomb for me. - Matthew Way, Locals recommend Whistler for sunny days and Blackcomb for cloudy: The weather systems come from the West, and Whistler mountain gets the cloud first of all. This can tend to shred it a bit, before it hits Blackcomb. - Also, Blackomb broadens out toward the base, and so there's a better selection of tree-line runs.
Pretty damn good day, I have to say, although it took a certain ingenuity to guess just where the cloud would clag up the visibility. Generally spent the day hopping between the Solar Coaster (good at the top, foggy at the bottom) 7th Heaven (murky at the top, but clearing after the first pitch) and the Glacier Express (in a window of opportunity).
The weather here is curiously local, so that often one part of the mountain will be wreathed in cloud, while over the ridge it'll be clear. Unfortunately, this can change in the time it takes to ride the lift, so clairvoyancy is an asset.
Forecast for tomorrow is for much more sunshine, so it'll be over to Whistler and the bowls tomorrow, with the blessing.

garywilk, they are 12, 10 and 5. I have the 5 year old booked into the snow camp for the first week so far. I always book my other two in for lessons and now they are pretty competent, I am looking forward to spending so time skiing with them. I get the impression we can book them into things on a day by day basis if required. We are staying in the Chateau so the pool etc should be well used.
The forecast still looks pretty good with low temps and a big dump on Sunday so we should be set. I just hope Zoom proves reliable!
Acacia, thanks for the advice on where to ski.

Matthew Way, Veeeight is correct. Easter is always manic as far as ski schools are concerned. Brits all over the place. Your 12 year old is a year short of doing ride tribe which my eldest loves. If the eldest two are good skiers (level 6) ask to go with "Jay" on Whistler mountain, one of the best instructors, kids love him and he really puts them through their paces. You will love the Chateau. Not sure if they are still skiing down to the hotel as the runs do cut up pretty badly pm. Finish the day at Merlins with some nachos for the kids. Passes that odd hour where kids are calming down from a days skiing before its time for a swim, shower and dinner.
Never had any problems with ZOOM. Flights always on time but not much room if you are down the back. Premium Economy offers a bit more room and free drinks. Are you taking regular coach transfer from Vancouver to Whistler? Private transfer will cost $700 +tax (return) but it is door to door and no hanging around. We have 16 more days to wait so lets hope the snow keeps on falling.

Alternatively you could use Whistler Taxi which is $220 each way + tip for a 6 seater van - a bit cheaper than a limo.
|
|
|
|
|
|
garywilk, yes we are in premium economy so that should be OK.
We are in the resort for 11 days so hopefully it should be quieter over the second wkend onwards.
We are going with Inghams so the transfer is sorted but we will need to get back to Vancouver under our own steam. I understand there is a regular coach service.
Mega dump forecast for Sunday so we should be able to ski back down I hope.

It's all very skiiable back down to village level, stilll PLENTY of snow down here (look at the village webcam), the issue is whether you want/should do! By 3pm the lower 800m is full of out of control people snaking their way down the slopes in heavy snow, you will notice many instructors downloading their groups on the chair for self presavation!
