Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

PhillipStanton, I'd be quite grateful if you could amend the thread title, to deflect said attention. My apologies - again - to all who are offended by my feeble attempts at humour, for straying into another specialist area where it is considered by some to be contra-indicated. BZK-creep (pun fully intended, but please don't take it personally) is becoming something of a hazard round here...

PhillipStanton, i finally received my G3 bindings and in order to mount them you have to first disassemble and wrap the cable around a post to take up slack if you have small boots or readjust for larger boots.

skimottaret, G3 leashes are pretty good. You'll find a mounting hole on the outside-edge side of your binding. The leash will be a (very expensive) length of wire, with a loop at one end, and a clip (for the boot loop) at the other. Thread the loop through the binding hole, and then the clip through the loop an' yer done ! Welcome to the world of being last to get your skis on snowHead

skimottaret, Any short leash should attach to a hol on the outside edge of each toe mount then clip through the D ring on the outside of your boot. I've got wires that look a bit like old skool safety pins.

tah boys, stupid question really but i wasnt sure if you were supposed to loop through the binding hole (and risk losing the leash) or somehow make a more permanent attachment to the binding when afixing binding to ski....

also seen these curly ones that seem easier but seem to get slagged off as useless.

PhillipStanton, asking the experts is wise and will email our friends at TP.

YOu want geekiness get some VIST interchangable bindings and telelmark adapters mate.

Geekiness is locating 9/32" stainless countersunk machine screws (to fix bindings to release plate) , cutting down an Allen key to fit in Leatherman toolkit and then phoning Loctite to get some industrial-strength threadlock ! Toofy Grin

and then finding the above did not work so the bindings still came loose Embarassed

ski do you have these vist thingys? i finally got all my bits together and went to screw all the pieces together and find, I dont the the right fasteners, i need to get a 5.5mm tap as the "pre drilled" holes are not threaded, the holes dont line up to the correct binding mount holes on the bindings and use two of the holes reserved for holding the steel binding to the plastic binding plate so.... To do it correctly i need to get another plate and or machine up a second conversion plate.... Laughing complete telemark pain in the a*rsedness...

spyderjon and kiwie1 have been most helpful but after working out several drawings and plans of action i feel like i am an apprentice draughtsman again.

skimottaret, Sorry to be unhelpful... but no... my Hammerheads are mounted directly on the ski. How many holes does the G3 binding have ?

When I mounted the Voile release I found that I could not use all of the holes in my Superloops - there were 5, I could only use the traditional 3. Looking at the picture on Jon's website, the plate has old (Riva) bindings on it, which have the traditional 3 hole mounting problem - is this what is happening to you ?

Is the tap for the ski ? or for the plate. If it's for the ski, you'll probably ok just to mount the screws only. I think you've just really discovered the joys of telemark rolling eyes

ski, not un helpful at all and the tap is for the ski adapter plate. Jon is going to sort out the drilling and tapping of the VIST adapter plate using the correct 4 holes for the G3 binding so hopefully i will be ready to rock in early jan. snowHead

had a fun session at MK with Richard and my boots are fantastic so hopefully should be mountain telemarking in the new year. That is unless the high probability that the leashes i ordered from TP get lost in the christmas post and additional pain in the a*sedness ensues Laughing

Well, buy me a stick on beard and knit me a lama hat * I'm a telemarker...

...ok, a pretty rubbish telemarker. Blue runs haven't looked so scary in years. And the one time I got cocky and started really "flowing" I crossed my uphill ski over the downhill ski - just as I transitioned. I stood up, tried to change edge and fell down like a tree. Onto my left thigh. My it hurt. And the resulting bruise is mightily impressive.

Still, I've mounted my own bindings and they've not come off. (Thanks for all the moral support.)

And I've now spent a total of three and a half days down on one knee or the other. The morning after the first full day was somewhat "special". And remarkably, I've only fallen once.

And, as promised, my alpine skiing has mysteriously improved.

* Actually, I've realised that a real telemarker would knit their own lama hat. After having grown the lama...

Thanks ski snowHead

As per your suggestion, I've mounted them as per the 22 Designs instructions - which on the Aztec Pros turns out to be just about midway between chord centre and balance centre. On the Aztec Pros this is quite a long way forwards of alpine boot centre - as they've got a dual sidecut.

My only problem now is that I've discovered that I'm running out of edge on the skis - so they're not going to last long!

I've randomly got the bindings set to hole 2, but haven't yet been brave enough to play around with making them less or more active. Any tips on this?

ski - I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!! Shocked

Errr, ok, maybe that's a little overstated.

As advised, I moved the bindings back to position 4 and it made a huge, instant difference to my telemarking. Much more "support" from the back foot and the added resistance has made me much more willing to trust the kit when I "drop" down (wrong term I know).

I would have tried position 5, but I found out that I'd not centered the plastic plate properly on either binding - so I can't get the guide into position 5. I'm going to have to loosen the screws and re-centre.

THANK YOU SKI!

Twelve years after buying my first Tele setup, which got used a couple of times at Milton Keynes and then collected dust for a decade until this year when I had a go at tele again this winter. At the time I bought Scarpa T2X boots G3 cable bindings and had put em on some old rubbish skis so this year decided to get @spyderjon to remount the bindings on a pair of decent piste skis that I like but had broke the Alpine bindings on to create my 2019 telemark setup. Took a private lesson from Roberto at our good friends SkiMarmalade in Meribel. He was amazed I still had such old school gear and like all things telemarking/touring equipment selection things have moved on and suggested upgrading, so I have a complete geek fest of choices.. After my lesson I did a couple of mornings trying to figure it out for myself, failed miserably and have just came back from a week of tele skiing and really digged it and felt good on my gear. Unfortunately, I managed to get high sided during some J turns and busted a ski (but not me for a change) so need to replace.. In order to carry on with the course hired a pair of skis with the 7TM bindings and after a few runs to get used to em I really liked them in preference to the cable bindings due to the lack of leashes needed, a smoother, more active flex plus I really like the comfort that knowing they have a DIN release due to having trashed knees. I sold the cable bindings (including busted skis Wink ) to a guy on the course so I need advice on a new set up.

SO..... CHOICES.... Any tele geeks please talk to me...

I have about two weeks total tele experience and am a decent level alpine skier 6'4" 98kg and hard on equipment. I have no desire (at this point) to learn off piste telemarking, nor tour with tele kit and I view tele as a fun way to ski with intermediate friends while learning something new. I don't really want cable binders again due to leashes and faff of putting on so am pretty sold on the 7TM binders with my current Scarpa 75mm boots. I have big feet and renting boots is probably not an option and I prefer to own boots.

Option 1 is to keep current 75mm boots (which fit fine) and get new binders on a piste focused ski. 7TM binders about £230 plus fitting onto some old skis gets me back in the game..

Option 2 is to skip the boots and go for two pin NTN boots like the TXPro at £460 and hire skis when I want them keeping my options open so if I really get into tele buy some skis and NTN or Meidjo binders. Gets me a more higher performance modern set up that is compatible with a wider range of hire gear and is more future proof but faff of ski hire means probably won't actually tele much. Binders are £300 plus fitting so an extra 500 quid with no guarantee I will like the boots or setup.

Option 3 (full cunning plan mode) I am upgrading my touring setup for next season and am planning on getting some Dynafit Legend 88's with Shift bindings that I can use with my alpine race boots as an all mountain set up keeping the option of bringing along my floppier AT boots and skins for short skins and off the back type of stuff.

The cunning bit is possibly to quiver killer these skis for both the Shifts and the 7TM's which would give me the option of doing everything with one ski/skin set up and minimal faff if I fancy a few days telemarking. Is this a cool idea or completely stupid Puzzled

Thoughts from fellow ski geeks gladly received. Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

Looking at the old Bomber Bishops above they still make them but pricey at $500 but.... can be reworked for NTN to future proof. Anyone on the BMF/3 binders ?

I've been using 7TMs for a number of years, skis fitted with Quiver Killer inserts - when going away I've tended to take 2 sets of skis with Alpine and Tele boots and bindings. This worked well, apart from lugging the extra weight in my baggage and meant I could ski Alpine if worried about keeping up with fast friends.

This year I've bought the Meidjo binding, together with the alpine heel units with Crispi EVO boots (Scott and Scarpa boots don't have the option to use the heel units) and although pricey it has been simply fantastic (based, so far on a few days in the Alps and several trips to Chill Factore). Again, I've fitted Quiver Killer inserts to my skis for this, but beware that is 13 inserts per ski (plus 2 more if adding the alpine heel units), so a lot of careful measurement and drilling. Stepping into the bindings is okay, not quite the 'stamp and go' of an alpine binding - a bit more fiddly than the 7TMs as care is needed to engage the pins when pressing down on the brake.
For future trips it means I only need to pack one set of boots now Happy
They do recommend ensuring you have skis with metal/titanal plates in the binding mount area to reduce risks of pullout (I think the QK inserts also help here as they have a greater contact area).

(I do still like my old skis with 7TMs and G3 Targa bindings although I haven't been on them since I got the Meidjo set up).

@skimottaret, Congrats on L1 Very Happy

Thoughts. Option 1. That would work -- but I'm not a fan of how 7TMs ski....and it's a lot of money for not much upgrade in performance.

Option 2. Would work -- Tx-Pro a good upgrade from older T2s...but not everywhere (yet) has NTN to rent...but TX-Pro is future-proof and NTN kit is becoming more available.

Option 3. Hmm not sure I would want to spend much money on a 75mm setup (on the other hand a certain BASI trainer doesn't seem to have a problem)...I think QK would be a good plan -- but why not QK for Meidjos and have done with it? In the dim distant past I had some Intuitiv Bigs (Legends replaced them) and they skied tele really well.

I've not skied the Bombers (although I could have tested them last Sunday rolling eyes ), and I know they have a dedicated fan base, but they aren't a "true" NTN binding, so although you'd get a performance boost compared to G3 I think you'd get more from NTN. BTW Jaz says the edge hold on Meidjos is superior to anything else she has tried.

I've managed to write 4 paragraphs without mentioning 22Designs....when I get back I'll try to get to Hemel with some Hammerheads, you should try those wink

@moss Good point... I have broke numerous alpine bindings in the past and managed to bend my tele skis and pull out the binders last week. The skis were Dynastar with a Ti sheet and I will be mindful of this and only put tele bindings on a beefy ski...

Also like your point about the Quiver Killers spreading the load a bit more and will certainly use them come whatever decision I make on Binding system
