Popped back in for a moment as I forgot something I wanted to say. What I did find interesting in this was a comment from the first posting: That a seven year old (as we later found out) was able to analyse their position on a video and be horrified at how they looked. I hope that they are able to understand from what has been posted and therefore could be explained to them that the way the ski now is physiological and will abate as they get older and stronger.
Right I'm really going now

Megamum, Rest assured that has already been done and now he doesn't feel nearly so bad about "looking like a dork". He's looking forward to trying the fun things that easiski suggested especially if he gets to laugh at me making more of a fool of myself than usual! He is now quite confident that it will come but he wants to try a few things to help the process along.
And thanks for your contribution, we novices musn't be afraid to post our opinions, one day we will be right!!

little tiger, I don't mind, so long as it's done in a friendly way, which it was.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

My friend used to do this. Corrected by the 'imagine you are clenching a £50 note between your buttocks' technique. Cannot fail to keep you from standing up, rather than sitting.

Quick update. My son was back on the dry slope today and having seen how he skis there was a VAST improvement even before his instuctor arrived!
Unfortunately no video today so he'll just have to take my word for it!

easiski, He plays tennis and swims. He is not a particularly athletic child and left to his own devices he would spend every spare moment with his nose in a book. Skiing is the one thing that he seems to be reasonably ok at so he has chosen to ski and it had done wonders for his confidence. After today I don't think there was too much damage done with the video, not as much as I had first feared but I will be very sure that there is a big and noticeable improvement before I get it out again.!

ickabodblue, If he plays tennis better than he skis you can relate it - he won't be running about on his heels to do that will he?

easiski, No definately doesn't play tennis better than he skis! We have tennis courts at the bottom of our street and I had hoped that when he was a teenager he would hang around the tennis courts instead of drinking Buckfast on street corners. His tennis is however abysmal so he's finishing this block of lessons and then I'm letting him give up. So far I don't have to encourage him to go skiing so, you never know, he might hang around the ski club instead .... just hope he doesn't drink Buckfast there!

Haven't time to read all the answers already here but will weigh in with my 2 pence worth.
At age 7 its not something to worry about. Its all to do with relative body sizes/ muscular development etc etc.
As they get stronger kids will naturally find a more 'centred' stance. If you want to help things along just get him/her to stand taller, usually works a treat. But don't expect to see a miniature version of an adult skier. 2 very different body types so you can't compare.
Best thing to do is lots of jumps...he/she will soon find the middle of their feet...
