Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Russell, the photo only shows my thermals (I had just washed the tunic and just couldn't do a thing with it). This year I will be wearing mostly this, topped with the latest style in jackets . When going in for competitive racing I will change my helmet for this one.

Alan, I have been thinking a lot about this Kick term (better than counting sheep}. Looking at these 2 sites ( ifyouski and robertsski ) I can see where I have been going wrong. I was thinking of kicking a football (interesting coaching site with David Beckham: modem / broadband ), but of course I should have been thinking continental and visualising this sort of kick. Silly me.

kuwait_ian, so sorry you can't see all the fun.
londonfetishscene.com is rather exteme, and I was a bit concerned about using that picture, but a helmet covered in spikes was too good to miss.
Just why your censor stopped pettipond.com ["a site for those of us who adore petticoats, crinolines and any kind of bouffant fashion (Poufbunnies)"] showing a superb array of can-canning ladies in bright red dresses with legs at maximum kick I just cannot imagine. Get a different ISP.

Jonpim, not a lot to choose from hereabouts. One of the better ones from a censorship angle went bust. I can live with the pettiness; I'm not really into pettycoats. Wink Wink

Erm, going back to skiing, A Kick turn is more of a kick when doing it uphill, when skinning (ie with unfixed heel). It helps to bring the lower ski around if you give it a sort of flick as you lift it to get your heel off the ski.
The normal kick turn is done downhill, though as a child I was shown one which is done uphill: you bring the lower ski accross the upper one (so at the halfway point your feet are facing towards each other rather than away from each other). This feels more stable to me on a steep slope, but looks even more double-jointed. (At Milton Keynes I showed a few people how hilarious it looks if you link them together in a continuous movement). On a very steep slope (where it could be a disaster to fall) the experts agree you shouldn't use a Kick turn. A jump turn springing off the top foot is better. (This is easier on a steep slope, but learn somewhere safe before you use it in ernest!). Shocked Skullie

A common misconception. People who are skill at drawing usually aren't so good at Pictionary as they take too long trying to draw the clue well. Cack-handed idiots like me produce something more impressionistic (but guessable) in no time.

However, there are few career opportunities for good Pictionary players and I'm rubbish at guessing what other people are drawing so snowball, has the more useful talent.

Bakc in France I have a Ski Club 'learn to ski' booklet from the mid-60's. This includes a very nice series of pictures illustrating the kick-turn along with useful advice on ski clothing - stout tweeds are good as are "string vests, as worn on the Everest expedition".

I take your point in general, but most artists I know can dash off a sketch at least as fast as anyone else.
For example this horse took me about 5 seconds (I timed it)

Yes, I know the back leg didn't go quite right, but given the point I was making I couldn't go back and change it. The "knee" in most mammals is actually right by the belly and the "heel" half way down the leg.

Hey! We could do online pictionary!
My other problem, apart from not being able to draw, is not knowing how to post the pictures. I've tried drawing on the mouse mat: that doesn't work. Drawing on the screen doesn't seem to work either. So, how do you do it?

Jonpim, do you mean draw the pictures - for which you need a suitable drawing program - or post them, for which you need a website to which you can upload and link. If the latter you're welcome to use mine snowHead

Drawing quickly wouldn't be the problem with online pictionary - it would be getting the pic on a website and then doing the url= here

Well that's why I qualified my comment with "not overly steep" Laughing but a jump turn off one ski is a different and reliable turn more suited to steep than flat.

Oh, sorry, I meant Mr. Craggs. No, I don't think we've met, I've never been to Mordor, have you skied Maryland?

You're talking about jumping off the uphill ski "pedal turn"? Still you must keep skis parallel to slope angle or tails might catch(?). I learned hop turns on flat terrain, not as a steep technique but as a ski school exercise for balance, rhthym, warm up muscles, or to get strong(?). When I used it to get out of trouble in Alta chutes at Jackson Hole, I found out the hard way that you have to adjust the skis trajectory to match slope angle. I ended up some how, luckily, still on that vertical pitch facing the snow with skis pointing out (like herring bone). It took a while to get facing downhill again and scary, maybe I should have used kick turn! If I had pushed off uphill ski, I might have got higher off the snow and avoided the near disaster.

DCGaper, unfortunately I haven't (yet) skied Maryland, and yes I meant off the uphill ski. This question of "jump turns" is interesting - many off piste guides I have been with favour them, and you see lots of them in the movies, but other "gurus" tend to disparage them, rationalising that anything which takes the skis off the snow means a loss of control, albeit temporarily, and as you say, if it goes wrong it can lead to disaster. These days I tend to just go along with whatever the guide's preference is, no point in arguing about it.

If you are in a very narrow couloir there may not be room for anything else. Also if it's very steep you may not want even the little bit of speed involved in steering the skis around.

When you've got room, though, and the slope is steep and exposed but not extreme (and you have suitable snow) I've found that guides often encourage returning to a stem turn.

snowball, yes indeed, a great big stem is very useful at times - and there was someone on the other thread asking why the snowplough is still taught..... Cool

Nothing wrong with a stem turn. Its got me out trouble on many an occasion. In fact I think ski schools should remind even better skiers of it from time to time.
