TallTone, I'm sure we'll get some skiing in, the reports up top look pretty good. I only want the snow down low so I can do some sliding in my bum with my little 'un. His first time in the white stuff (we hope!)

Looking across to La Ros from Arc 2000 (with the naked eye rather than Pete's superlong lens) the snow looks considerably worse than in those photos from a couple of weeks ago. Warm temps and cloudless days have taken their toll on south-facing slopes, which is most of the La Ros domain I think. Conditions should be much better on the La Thuile side though, and next week's forecast snow should help a lot.

rob@rar, At the bottom of the page are photos from yesterday. la Thuile has indeed 3 runs listed as open right down to 1400m, it also has far greater cannon coverage, and the link is open

Been to La Rosiere from the 16th - 23rd.
La Rosiere, snow is terrible, rocks, grass, main red closed from top to bottom, sent around a blue run, which by the end the week very bad.
BUT La Thuile brilliant skied there everyday, up the main chair across to the Fort Chair lift, and the snow was wonderful from then on.
The bellecombeI and II were great fun, rollercoaster blues In La Thuile you could only ski to the Gondola station and no lower, but the snow cannons were
on in the town, so it looked like they were going to open.
The main Chair lift the Chaz Dura Express was being setup.
Biggest problem with La Rosiere was lack of snow cannons (something to do with not having there own water supply, so I was told).
Then the wind just seemed to blow the stuff away. By the afternoon it was like skiing from sheet ice to duned snow not fun.
The nursery slope was being maintained by trucks bringing in snow from somewhere.
The town of La Rosiere, very pleasent, locals very friendly, a family orientated resort without a doubt.
Les Eucherets around the corner was just grass, with the main chair taking people up was working.
Still had a great weeks skiing.

Starting to panic a bit now! Went to La Ros last year 15-22 Jan - super conditions, lots of snow and a couple of fresh dumps while we were there. Going the same week this year 14-21 Jan and am getting very worried!
The pictures look bloody awful! I'm booked in for a week of lessons with ESF, god knows what will happen if the snow doesn't improve. i guess just have to hope that La Thuile hangs on in there and we can get a full week in on that side.

magic_hat, Dont worry the snow is on its way. Only the link runs have been opened in the Col area and with a bit more snow they should be open. From what blytht, says itakly is in good nick. Its all irrellevant as there is a big dump ariving next few days.
johnboy, and his better half are in resort same time as you

I was under the impression that La Ros had perfect snow from 1 Dec to 31 May? Have I been mis-informed?

Frosty the Snowman, Thanks mate, I have to say I had a fantastic time, I joined up with Bridgit Jones family, they have a 10 year old son (No fear and all that!!), he made me ski my socks off finding jumps, hockey stopping within inches the normal drill, great fun, absolutely skied out by the end of the day.
There is a bar I think is was called Le Clays, had three life size statues inside, one of Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, and some pirate bloke
They were the friendliest french people I have ever meet. Not one word of english was spoken but we got by (and pissed!!) Cheers Bruno
The Petit Danones bar upstairs was a good place also, beer was bloody horrible (Faxe!!) but the shots soon covered the taste.
The journey back was the biggest nightmare I have ever had. The flight from Grenoble was cancelled till the next day Christmas Eve
Thought I was not going to make it back for Christmas.
I have to say though the Crystal Reps were very good, they did there best and made a terrible situation bearable. But it definitely gives a vote to the DIY traveller.
A number of people jumped on the two remaining flights back to England that night Ryanair to STN and XL to LGW. But in the end the overnight stop in a Novotel was
not to bad. Got back around 20 hours late
Looking forward to Saalbach (26th Jan) with CharlatanEFC, Nick_C, Fenlandskier.......................

You have indeed been mis-informed. La Rosiere is just an ordinary ski resort with reasonable altitude and a good snow depth record. |
Indeed! It also has very sunny slopes because of its southerly aspect, which is great if it's cold and there's lots of snow but if conditions are marginal that side of the Espace Bernardo suffers badly (as PG's photos show - on the opposite side of the valley in Arc 2000 there is no such problem).

Just back from Les Arcs. Although snow conditions weren't good, most of the resort was open and it was even possible to ski down to the lower altitude villages (albeit on manmade snow).

I've just got back from our first trip to La Ros, and while the snow was pretty poor we had a great time (the worst christmas in years, no-one could remember it as bad, just our luck >, certainly by the end of the week the worst conditions I've seen). It's a lovely place, with fantastic weather & view, and really nice layout to the pistes - if only more had been open! The best snow was on the north side of the Fort and in Italy, but you're due a big delivery of white stuff over Monday and Tuesday and with the weather FINALLY shifting there's bound to be more snow coming along soon. They worked really hard to manage the snow and under the circumstances did a great job. With the amount coming in over the next few days I wouldn't worry at all...

Got back on Sat from a week in La Rosiere. Thank God for hire skis!! They were absolutely battered by the end of the week. Rocks and grass everywhere in France, the happier side of things were the conditions in La Thuile (La Rosiere was deserted during the day barring the nursey slopes and ski school). There were few people in the whole resort, including Italy. Conditions aside, we had a great time, would have liked to ride the Fontain Froid, but no chance! Even with their worst conditions in years (apparently they had a town meeting about keeping the reort open last Wednesday), there were no queues, snow to play in, good skiing to be had. I know someone may come on and say how poor it was, and La Rosiere was poor, Italy had only a small proportion of runs open, but there was snow, there was fun to be had, and yes.... I have seen the webcams today and I know the Fontain Froid is now open, but so what, I got a tan drinking my vin chaud at 2000m in a t-shirt on Xmas day!! It can't be all bad!
