cathy, I saw a few Japanese at Tignes. They seemed to deal very well with the Spanish invasion.

"Back onto thread Japanese people typically dont travel well and get stressed easily when out of their country for the first time..."
What patronising bullsh*t. Do you know any Japanese people personally?

Well, for starters there's my wife, her mum and dad, my sisters in law, my nieces, friends of my wife's and mine. You get the picture.
"Back onto thread Japanese people typically dont travel well and get stressed easily when out of their country for the first time..."
That is a patronising, bullsh*t generalisation.

skimottaret, I'm sure you are right and it is the way the word was (and is) used by people with often unconscious racist attitudes which made it so. Perhaps I should have added to my general statement that people can sometimes use a word innocently, not realising what it normally "means".
Of course I didn't only include verbal meaning in what I said and it wasn't original - I was thinking of Witgenstein's "Meaning is use".

TwistBarbie, this thread requires generalisations. How else can 120 million people be neatly summarised?

That's kind of my point. You can't neatly summarise 120 people, never mind 120 million.

I rather think it's a common Western misconception that just because the Japanese are polite when trying to be friendly, they aren't capable of rampaging violently round foreign countries raping, pillaging and conquering like Europeans. My but don't we have short memories. I'm sure most don't have much to fear from the average holiday resort whether in the Alps or not and whether they speak a word of English or whatever other European dialect or not. Of course they'll find it easier in a resort that gears up for them but then so do I.
