Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

FenlandSkier, my advice, as someone who is not the world's best skier, is that the only people you should listen to if they tell you that you are not a good skier, are the ones who are interested in helping you become a better skier.
...and you should only listen to them if they are happy when they are skiing.

My goal at 60 is not do anything stupid that could prevent me skiing for at least another 10 years. The one thing you find as you get older is that it takes much longer and much more effort to get up after a fall.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Wear The Fox Hat, it's not so much others telling me I'm bad, it's the realisation myself that I'm not as good as I could be and the world of off piste etc is available to me IF I put the effort in to learn it.
On the other hand I could just accept my current level and ability and not improve.

What I don't want to do is spend the next 10 years chasing an imaginary dream of being the world's best fat bloke on skis and not enjoying myself, I'd rather stick in my current comfort zone and smile. I will try to improve though, I just don't want it to be all about hitting particular targets.
If I'm smiling after a green run it was a good run. If I'm smiling after falling over 20 times in powder, it was also a good run.

FenlandSkier, as I said last week at Castleford fella, wait till January. I guarantee you will improve a fair bit skiing with our kid all week.

Look at me, I'm as unfit as they come, but I do ok as (I've been told) my technique isn't that bad. That's only from skiing with my brothers and pals who've been skiing for getting on 20 years, telling me what I should be doing and putting it into practice. I haven't had a lesson since an hour during my 3rd week.

Unfortunately, I've now also realised, I won't get any better until I lose a KFC Bargain Bucket sized chunk of my weight Wink

FenlandSkier, take a look at my "goals" on page 1 - you might find something there worth chasing.

...as for being the "world's best fat bloke on skis", I've said it before, and I'll say it again - the best skier on the hill is the one with the biggest smile on his face.

I want to surround myself with happy people, not sad ones, when I'm on holiday.
I want to ski with people who encourage me, and who I can encourage.
I don't want to ski with people whose faces are so sour, they could turn milk, or who are totally self-obsessed.

Interesting thoughts in this thread... a couple open questions:

Do you think that improving your skills leads to more or less enjoyment?

I think it does improve my enjoyment, because I generally want to do things well. Also, if you don't have good technique then ultimately you get tired quicker and don't enjoy the day so much - it is not as much fun fighting the mountain as it is flowing with the mountain, although I can claim to have done this very rarely, being a relative novice.

So, I like to improve my technique and find it is better to have a few specific goals, otherwise it all gets lost in having fun and drinking gluwein Wink

For me, improving technique pays dividends in improving my enjoyment, as it opens up more options to me. The better I get the happier I am on any terrain. On a green run I can practice silly drills on one ski (thanks easisk!), practice my turns, straight line it, go off to the side, get some air off the bumps, ski backwards...

It also gives me the ability to choose a run because I like the look of the scenery, or where it goes to, or because it's in the sunshine, rather than based on what colour it is.
