Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski tourers missing near Zermatt

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
A few more details I‘ve heard reported about this. (Not sure how accurate they are). The missing person is a female, (girlfriend of one of the brothers) her equipment was found near the attempted snow cave site. 5 of the six bodies, although not together were easily located and wore active avalanche beacons. A signal for the 6th person could not be located. The search for the last person was called off yesterday. Although they tried to build a snow cave the snow was too hard. It may be that they had lightweight shovels (plastic).
The weather forecast was (as many have already said) very bad with high winds and Avalanche warning level 4 ! It‘s suspected that they experienced a whiteout.

@Blackblade, Fronts can move unpredictably and be preceded by high winds that slow you right down, even if blowing from sort of behind. They knew that - they knew that the Foehn is brutal over those parts, and the They took a HUGE gamble given the meteo. I suspect 'object fixation' may often play a role. 'We've planned....we won't have the same practice time for the event...it's tight....but let's do it...'. Mistake. Hubris?

Idris....you've read the account of the 'two Jamies' at Chamonix? - the surviving quad amputee Jamie is a friend of a friend.

Hi mum was my school Chemistry teacher - which with hindsight must've been the academic year after his accident. An incredible story of survival and willpower to achieve what he has since. His book is a great read too!

@DB, it snowed heavily on Saturday night so she may be buried under the fresh snow in the vicinity but without a transceiver signal very hard to locate. High winds smooth out the snow and it doesn’t melt at that altitude until late Spring

@BobinCH,
Yes. The report said one of the following was possible -
a) Beacon batteries ran out.
b) Beacon wasn’t switched on.
c) She fell in a deep crevasse.
d) She didn’t have a beacon.

I hope it wasn‘t d).
