I just did a dummy booking for Europcar for Christmas. Chains were offered as one of the optional extras. £63! I expect that's the same with other firms too. It did note that that pesky cross-border charge is mandatory. |
We rent via Europcar’s Swiss site and there’s no mention of a cross border charge. In fact the t&cs list all the countries you can go to, and specifically mentions some Eastern European countries where a charge is applied. We’ve certainly never been charged in 30-40 rentals over the last few years.
It is permissible to use the vehicle in the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary,
Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The
Netherlands. This also applies the use of the vehicle on islands within these countries (except for the
Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira and overseas territories). The use of the vehicle in Croatia, Czech
Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia is only permitted with the prior consent of the Lessor and
conclusion of a cross-border surcharge and must be stated on the rental agreement.

@Origen, in fact just checked on the app where the cross border charge is mentioned as an extra - and it just applies to the countries mentioned above:
Cross Border Cover For check out in Switzerland
This is mandatory if you plan on driving the vehicle across the border to: Croatia/ Czech Republic/Hungary/Slovakia/Slovenia (for categories U... (Premium Elite)/L...
(Luxury)/W...(Luxury Elite)/O... (Oversize)/ X... (Special) except vehicles with 6 and seats driving the vehicle across the border to listed countries is strictly prohibited).
No mention of France.

I’ve had to pay cross border with Hertz and it’s mentioned on attached T&C’s from voucher. It’s CHF30. Frustrating for me as I only drive about 3 kms into France from the border at Morgins.

Just FYI the ground floor of P.51 is currently being refurbished and the car rental pickup/dropoff is on the 1st floor. After drop-off, they also direct you to walk back to terminal the via the top road. How long this will be in place for isn’t clear.
Also note that if you’re using Hertz, the Existing Damage Chart and photographs are emailed to you in the period between being given the keys and getting to the car. In theory. Last week, however, it took 6 hours for the email to arrive in my inbox. So we had to hang around and get a rep at P.51 to check the Damage Chart on his tablet and sign the car off as OK.
This prompted us to think ‘Well, why not ask them to OK the car anyway? Whether or not the email has arrived. Why should we bear the responsibility for checking the car on pickup when they (Hertz) could do it?’
To be fair to Hertz, we had a very helpful rep talk to us when we previously picked up a car. She said that they are actually more focused on alloy wheel damage than any minor small scratches to the bodywork, so we should always be thorough in checking the alloys as well.

@Ozboy, we flirted with Hertz once or twice but the cross border fee and the 75% battery requirement on EVs put us off.

@LaForet, interesting. I’m popping over to Morzine on Monday to have fibre fitted so helpful to know.

I've done quite a bit of car hire from Geneva this year for work (and once for skiing).
Just on the logistics of getting to the desks for the car hire, then getting out of the airport, the Swiss side wins, hands down. Getting to the French car hire desks is a long expedition which is really awkward when carrying skis, etc. You end up driving a very odd route to get out of the French side and it's a bit of a detour to get to the motorway. From the Swiss side you are almost straight onto the motorway.
Also, add the fact that the customer service at the French desks is very French, and it is very Swiss at the Swiss desks, then again the Swiss companies win!
I saved money booking from a French firm, but would I do it again - definitely not and that's before you start thinking about vignettes and snow tyres!

Just got an email from Hertz to say that they have a 15% discount fire sale on at the moment. If you take a look, I'd do so as a Hertz Gold member, as I think this only applies to members. It's free to join up.
When I booked for our trip last week, there was a clear difference between the regular Hertz rates and the lower rate for Gold Members. The difference for us was about 20%
We also got upgraded to an AWD hybrid SUV, which was nice. It meant we could regenerate the (small 13.5 kW) battery going down the mountain, then freeze it and fill up cheaply away from the airport, then just use the battery for the remainder of the return journey and arrive with 100% full petrol tank. With PHEVs there's no requirement to drop-off with a full battery.
Vignettes are also now electronic and incorporated into the rental charge.
