Does sound a little strange - if the airport was shut there wouldn’t be any departures.

Could you get a taxi over to Chambery and pick up your hire car? Not ideal and I guess depends on how late the hire car desk stays open.

@sugarmoma666, I think the main problem is that TFS' plane isn't being allowed to unload the passengers at Lyon - so needs to fly somewhere!

@under a new name, we’ve got a hotel booked - independently rather than relying on the reservations that Crystal are allegedly making - and are allegedly on the first flight back tomorrow.
It does feel like a dropped b*llock given the propensity for fog at Chambery.

What time were you up this morning?
We’re still expecting to get off at Lyon - but reckon it’s been 3 hours since we landed (and they told us we’d be on a bus within an hour!).

I've only used Chambery Airport once as part of a Crystal package. I'd always avoided it but decided it was worth the risk in 2022 to avoid introducing another country and border crossing into the equation. (In 2022, countries were still shutting borders due to COVID with limited warning.) We were incredibly lucky and it all worked seamlessly but I could see how limited the facilities were at the airport and wouldn't want to get stuck there.
Alongside the cancellation of all Eurostars today, it's not been a great day for travel.
I really feel for you guys, especially those where this is cutting into the beginning of your holiday.

I was up at 330am. At the airport before 6am.
If we land successfully, we’ll have taken off and landed in three different countries today. People would normally pay good money for that!

A couple of years ago I was in a similar situation (fog at Chambery) - when we finally took off from Lyon, the Pilot announced that we were flying to Manchester instead of Birmingham !! (aircraft had to be in Manchester for the next days first flight..) - Cue a chaotic bus journey to Birmingham !!!
As we were stood in Manchester arrivals waiting for our luggage, Mobiles started 'pinging' -- notification of our 'Compensation' due to the length of delay !!
Holiday was with Crystal

Had this a couple of times with Jet2
Once trying to land in Madeira and once trying to get out of Innsbruck. They got us into hotels for the night but it took a while to arrange.
The flight crew were in the dark as much about what was to happen as we were.
Weather happens but certain airports it happens often enough that they should have contingency plans in place.

Innsbruck I get, but why people use Chambery is beyond me. You save a few £ perhaps but it's a shyte airport and you have this well known operational risk

I’ve kind of been following this all day. The forecast yesterday evening was for a 40% chance of fog at Chambery. When I got home from the pub the temperature and dew point were very close so fog was almost inevitable. It arrived.
Some of the TUIs delayed but not by long enough so we had morning diversions. When TOs are involved there is always pressure to get to the original airport to avoid having to bus 2 loads of punters. So quite often a couple of hours on the ground at Lyon and a 20 min flight solves all the problems. But it’s a gamble, today it didn’t pay off as the fog reformed ahead of the forecast. In addition there’s only so much parking space at Chambery so it fills up with later flights and as landings are normally done heading south and take offs to the north operations are quite slow anyway (can’t run the risk of meeting over the Lake!).
So now you have the aircraft in the wrong place, no extra staff at the diversion airfield to do all the extra handling and a whole load of grumpy passengers. Also the early flight’s crew will be running out of hours so hotels for all!
The jet2s took off much later so they can still fly home having bussed all the folks to Lyon.
Of course sorting all this out takes time. Of course there are contingency plans but with 8 loads of passengers for 4 aircraft you are looking at around 1400 passengers, so 800 bedrooms and a load of buses to get them there. But it’s new year, Lyon is a popular place at New Year and all the buses have been travelling to resorts and drivers are running out of hours as well. You need an army of booking clerks!
It’s not easy. Luckily it only happens twice a year!
The solution: stop using Chambery and double the size of the parking and terminal at Grenoble. Pay the specialist staff to travel to Grenoble (Chambery to Grenoble - about 45 mins). But they are in 2 different departements - bit of an issue.
Lyon also seems to have spare capacity, lots of charters used to go there, Chambery and Grenoble must be cheaper.
Ultimately, you pays your money……

One day travelling to a ski resort is long and tiring enough (especially with kids); doing it twice would be head wrecking. I hope the holiday makes it all worth it.

@chocksaway, you are right, when I first skiied all the TO flights went to Lyon, Chambery was rarely used. Lyon will take a bit longer for a transfer to 3V or Tarentaise resorts but it is straight up the motorway. Presumably there must be a cost advantage given the transfer benefit is balanced by the risk of airport closure.
No idea how Grenoble would compare.

@chocksaway, we once sat on a hardstanding for nearly 3 hours at GVA on a Thompson flight. We were candidly told by an air stewardess that the issue was that we had missed Thompson's block booking of slots, and that as Thompson refused to pay GVA extra for an additional slot, and couldn't swap or merge us with another Thompson flight as they only did block bookings of several flights as that was cheapest, we had to wait for the next block booking window.
