Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I did not read any discussion on boots. The boot is much more important than the ski when we get up into advanced skiing and since the topic is the Head Rebel ski then we are needing the boot that can deliver the performance of the ski. Advanced carving skis need the boot and the technique (ability) to bend the modern sl ski and make it arc. Djf, I would question your boots first to carve the modern sl ski.

Hey there. Thanks for the reply. Totally agree with the view on boots. I’ve had various boots and my ones now are atomic hawx 120 with a custom footbed and a few adjustments for odd toe.

Realistically the answer was as other suggested and a combination of technique and confidence. These were really the problem I had/have. I’ve been working on these with instructors at the snowdome and this has been going well. Loads still to work on but I’m pretty comfortable on various skis now.

Having said all that I did still buy some new skis. I got a great deal on some head erally’s so I went for those. Tbh more for holidays but also for dome. Really like them but again my technique is the blocker. So now I have a choice on what colour I take to Hemel and what I fancy knowing that it’s not the ski that’s the issue.

Best regards

I am replying from the west side of the World the US and assuming the Snowdome is an indoor climate controlled ski hill. The Hawx 120 should get the job and I assume you have a custom footbed and you and the boots have been canted by a proper bootfitter. The art of carving and arcing linked turns is difficult to learn to do properly as we say: putting down the railroad tracks. Can you tell me more about the Snowdome, vertical drop. slope, quality of surface etc. I am assuming the snow is similar to a run on man made snow with a green/blue slope.

It's irrelevant. No-one is full on carving in a UK snowdome - not enough space and rarely a consistent enough surface to do so

@Dave of the Marmottes, plenty of decent skiers can lay down carved turns in a dome.. https://vimeo.com/135251079

 You know it makes sense.

Guess I was thinking that traffic is often more like the evasive move where possibly less than a full radius carve is used.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
I guess it depends what one means by "full on carving".

I've never seen anyone for example execute a complete circle at speed in a snowdome, or throw down a fully laid-out carve.

Or do anything which would really benefit from equipment specialised for a flat slope 160m long,
which I think is what the topic was about, wasn't it?

Guys, I do not want to start a pissin match. I do not know anything about your indoor facilities and am asking questions of the person (djf) that I was communicating with about his equipment and the indoor ski run. If you can't add anything constructive then please don't add anything. I am looking forward to djf's reply.

@sherman89, @skimottaret's clip shows you what a snowdome looks like. Only comment I'd make is that there is sometimes a lot more traffic than shown. Snow surface deteriorates as day progresses so you only really get "groomed" conditions in the first hour and there can be quite substantial variation between polished/scraped patches and sugary heavy mounds of displaced snow later.

Oh and thanks for being thread police on a thread that you unnecessarily bumped 8 months after it was current wink

@skimottaret, As you've put it up and it's quite interesting how would you describe what's going on around 0.07 and how it is achieved?

Is that a carve or a swift edge change or something else? Obviously its good and appropriate skiing particularly as it doesn't really involve sudden pivoting but in the context of a pure single carve it doesn't look exactly the same (perhaps because we can't slow it down enough).

A quick edge change trying not to kill the Instructor leading a kid, achieved through loads of practice Wink

He is a talented skier and won a few big races over the years... I bought a pair of his old GS skis and couldn't bend em at all Shocked

I put it up as an example of how you can achieve big edge angles going fairly slowly on a green pitch. Great balance, posture and movements. Have a look at the freeze frame of his last turn and see how deep his hip gets into the turn. Sweet...

Is that Ross? Was looking at the upper body during all the absorption going on at 0.08.

Big edge angles aren't usually my problem - whether I've achieved them via helpful mechanics is a different matter wink

The skier in the video is plain to see that he is an racer with excellent carving skills, in a pure carve turn there is no pivot, good job on a flat short run.
