I think losing market share to snowboarding was the driving factor in the 90s. Someone came up with the bright idea of sawing a snowboard in half and calling that a ski. It worked!

I think it's just preference. Straight skis are better for me. If I were to buy a new set of skis it would be the longest GS ski I can find. They are the most similar to my current slalom ski. Basically what everyone is doing these days is short radius GS/downhill carving.

Well, yeah but you said your old ones were "no problem" but I agree they will have degraded with time if not use.

Having one quiver gets over the issues of buying, storing, servicing and transporting two or more pairs of ski's. Which if you go once or twice a year and ski the whole mountain makes a lot of sense. And these days they can make skis that are wide enough to give a bit of float in powder but still have the ability to make decent turns on piste. Having specific skis for specific skiing makes sense when you have that option - perhaps you live in the mountains and/or choose to ski a particular thing - mogul, park, piste, powder, whatever, that means having a specialised ski is justified.

I got four pairs of new straight skis because in the 90s I could see the direction skis were headed and I didn't like it. Think Jimmy Connors buying up all the Wilson T2000s. I was in the same mind set.

What makes me think that Look bindings have not changed much? The modern Look Pivot is pretty much the Look 77 from 1979. They did improve the toe with 180 degree release. What I think people forget is that bindings are very simple devices. Spring working against an over center cam. That has not changed since they were invented.
