Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Andre straightski, have you tested out any of the newer skis? It's all well and good getting the nod from a few hipsters because you're on old kit, but there is a reason that things have changed and progressed.

I think losing market share to snowboarding was the driving factor in the 90s. Someone came up with the bright idea of sawing a snowboard in half and calling that a ski. It worked! Smile

If you want to ski on straight skis then more power to you, if you want to suggest that they're better than modern skis...

I think it's just preference. Straight skis are better for me. If I were to buy a new set of skis it would be the longest GS ski I can find. They are the most similar to my current slalom ski. Basically what everyone is doing these days is short radius GS/downhill carving.

Yes, I have 4 pairs of new in plastic straights.

Yeah, I was more asking why you ended up with 4 pairs of new skis in the first place...

As far as not being happy with my boots? Nothing is further from the truth. I am very happy but boots are one piece of equipment that age the most.

Well, yeah but you said your old ones were "no problem" but I agree they will have degraded with time if not use.

[quote="Andre straightski"]As far as switching binding brands, I mean if I were to get a new set. The Look bindings seem the least changed from the straight ski era.
I would have thought that would be a reason to not buy Look but what makes you think Look bindings haven't changed at all while others have? What changes are you not happy with in todays bindings?

Poles? Probably can use forever. Mine are from the early 80s.

On this we agree.

As far as the new skis being an improvement? Not sure about that if one needs to buy a quiver to handle all conditions.

Having one quiver gets over the issues of buying, storing, servicing and transporting two or more pairs of ski's. Which if you go once or twice a year and ski the whole mountain makes a lot of sense. And these days they can make skis that are wide enough to give a bit of float in powder but still have the ability to make decent turns on piste. Having specific skis for specific skiing makes sense when you have that option - perhaps you live in the mountains and/or choose to ski a particular thing - mogul, park, piste, powder, whatever, that means having a specialised ski is justified.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I got four pairs of new straight skis because in the 90s I could see the direction skis were headed and I didn't like it. Think Jimmy Connors buying up all the Wilson T2000s. I was in the same mind set.

What makes me think that Look bindings have not changed much? The modern Look Pivot is pretty much the Look 77 from 1979. They did improve the toe with 180 degree release. What I think people forget is that bindings are very simple devices. Spring working against an over center cam. That has not changed since they were invented.
