Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

i believe that the reason that they shut it was that people went down it even thought they were clearly not good enough to get down it and that the pisteurs had to keep coming to get people..... i think that the above video gives you a flavour of that lol

I think it was a combination of all sorts of things including the above, plus quite a lot more avalanche work. Ultimately the 3000 Poma was declared past it sell by date and shut down for 'technical and administrative reasons' (I think that was the banter). As the ski lifts in the National Park are on a one in one out basis I assume they just left it there as a bargaining chip for when they want to put a decent lift in somewhere else.

Still the entrance was a mogulled nightmare which opened up to good skiing. However, when I last did the Tnnel some bug had left the door open and it was a case of hands and knees to get through Shocked

Hi guys can I pick the brains of the snowheads collective. Going to be driving again this year... in a vw transporter with a roof box. Am I going to get in any of the covered parking in lac? I've heard there is high spaces but I'm going to be about 2.5m?

ski pass question - booked up for early Feb and chalet are offering to arrange our ski passes etc for €285 for the 6 days of skiing (which I understand is the same price as buying direct).. i've assumed there won't be any groundbreaking deals between now and Feb on ski passes (especially for 1 week), is that fair to say?

@snow_mac, I think you have assumed correctly.

Discounts from the Lift Company are rare. In the past I've been rewarded with a credit of about 45 euros (IIRC) pre season. This has been issued because I've had 4 or more weeks skiing accumulated on my Tignes Card in the previous season. These would have been individual weeks as opposed to a season pass.

Some larger tour operators offer "buy one, get one half price" deals but these are usually only available for "quiet" weeks. Very unlikely that February would be considered "quiet".

@Timg60, As mentioned above you need to be in the car park that you enter at the rear of the Maison de Tignes. (just to the left of the bus station as you approach). They park a few of the local private ambulances in there . I'm sure that you'll be okay for headroom. I did book a "high bay" a few years ago but I can't remember how I got to that option.

@GeorgeVII, thanks. really helpful. In any case i suspect the convenience of having the ski passes available and ready at the chalet on arrival will negate any benefit in price!

Perfect many thanks. I've parked in there before but when you try to think back to what was in there for the life of me I can't remember and it was only 6 months ago Very Happy

Plans coming together. Going to do a snoworks course first week of season. Then off to 3V for a week then back for 2 weeks. Then home for Chrimbo. Tax refunds are a wonderful if rare thing!! Now all I have to do is work out the pass website!

Can anyone point me in the direction of touring route maps from village level up?

There's the touring route from Val Claret to Col Du Palet around the back of the airport. It's marked with red lollipop markers every 20m or so. It's quite a steep route. A great way to work up an appetite for a beer at the refuge.

It's marked in purple on the piste map http://en.tignes.net/what-to-see-do/skiing/ski-map

Just thought I would add another reasonably priced lunch option to the others mentioned here.

La Cantine in Lavachet. It's just a couple of doors along from the Brassero so you can ski to, or hop off the bus probably 50-60 metres from the front door. Last season they were doing a slab of cake and a coffee for about 4 euros IIRC. Breakfast, sandwiches , salads, soft drinks and beers available.

Cheapest option is probably to get it delivered from Snow Shepherd or another specialist.

Just seen the Mammut ones are non refillable Shocked

I took my Ortovox on EasyJet last year. I emailed them, printed their reply and wrapped this around the canister. It was no problem at all.

@bar shaker, My understanding is that most of them aren't self-refillable (apart from the specific one's sold for the US market), but you exchange a spent one for a full one at a shop, which has refilling equipment, for ~€40 (ready to have this contradicted or confirmed).

Not convinced that having one delivered to France will cost less than the difference in price between UK & Val, but probably going to buy one here and carry it on Swiss with appropriate print-offs.

2 months today and I will have done my first few runs and probably be sitting down for a cool beer on the mountain somewhere. Panoramic if there has not been much snow by then. Summer seems to have gone quickly for once.
Toviere restaurant seems to have progressed a lot this month.
Glacier looks in pretty decent nick.

@chocksaway, Probably a question for you chocksaway. Have you had to apply for an "air crit" sticker for your car? Just read that Lyon & Grenoble are two of the areas affected.

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
ref crit air,
as far as I can tell from the rather "french" website maps, the area for which sticker required includes the apparently direct autoroutes, although the website also states that A7, A6, and A42 are not included in the scam, er scheme!
However the Bourg en bresse E15/A432 route neatly skirts the area! If road closures took place for whatever reason, I suppose you could still end up on an affected route however, question is bearing in mind the sporadic nature of the implementation of the scheme, you could just be lucky, although getting caught when the scheme is live means a wapping great euro 35 fine!

@GeorgeVII, The sticker is sat on my desk waiting to be stuck in the right place. It was only €4 so not worth worrying about. Additionally, there are a lot of pollution activists in Chambery so if it joined in it would be tricky to get round, these things often happen as a knee jerk by the local Mayor/Prefect. the trickiest thing was getting the file small enough for the website to accept, I discovered all sorts of new file types.

The crit air website doesn't list Chambery as one of the towns that is considering implementing it.

Looking at the autumn tarifs, there isn't any discount for buying multiple days at a time, it is just a fixed price per day. The Infini' Tignes card may be worth getting just to avoid needing to queue up to buy a daily ticket, if the glacier doesn't open you haven't been charged anything.

Notice that discount on pass only goes to 21 days so it looks like they have decided the4th week deal was costing them too much Crying or Very sad

Really?
I must be mistaken then, as in previous 6 years I have been buying 15 days, then top up 6 days, and then a final top up of up to 6 days, depending on which day we depart and the final top up works out very very cheap daily rate?
perhaps they will still do this but are not advertising it on website, hope so!

@snowornever, The wording is exactly the same as in previous years. I got 15 then 6 days last autumn and was also able to get a few more days after that at the reduced price.

@Otherworld,
Try the Vallee Blanche shop. Down the hill between the Taos and the central area where the ski schools meet. Good as any that are near I think. About 100m from the Taos just past the Mark Warner hotel. It is just a hop, skip and a jump from the shop to the nearest lifts. Friendly bunch.
