kevin mcclean, The great thing about skiing is that the cold air and exercise are great for waking you up and moving on the hangover. Just in time for the next session. I was once on a trip where we averaged 2 to 3 hours sleep a night. Had a nasty habit of falling asleep on the chairlifts though. And a draglift on occasion.
Caspar, Been in those rounds, but you take it in turns to dash off to the shower. Anyone caught sneaking in some ZZZs severely dealt with.

He he, excellent thread.
So guys, how many units of alcohol do you get through on a weeks skiing trip?
A guess for me, assuming a half litre of beer is 2.5 units, and a medium glass of wine is 1.5 units...
(5 beers + 2 wines) * 7 nights = 15.5 * 7 = 108 units
This is not intended as a competition!

Usually finish between 4 and 5, then straight to the nearest bar. Usually have 3 or 4 pints, take turns to go back to the room for a shower, meet back in same bar, go for a meal with a couple of bottles of red wine, then back the pub until 2am (till we're kicked out), with numerous pints and shooters for good measure Usually two nights a holiday we have an early(ish) night when we go to bed around midnight. Every day, out skiing usually between 9-9:30

The only trouble with taking your beer in the shower is it gets a bit diluted!!!

There's usually a shelf where an old bit of soap might normally be found - isn't that a shelf for the beer

I can drink at home. Drink many beers at night, following morning ski like sh....te.
One of the pleasures of a ski holiday is reminding the drunk who was calling you a wuss for not getting as plastered as him the night before that you've seen him ski better.

Members of the opposite sex have also been known to make that remark about nocturnal 'hump skiing', which is a good reason to make love as soon as the lifts close ... i.e. before hitting the bottle.

Great thread, I came to skiiing later in life about Mid thirties i think. The group I ski with, a bunch of mixed sex singles have slowed down somewhat of late. The Guys always specify "good nightlife" as a requirement of the Resorts we book, sadly we only tend to make it out of the chalet after Apres beers and Dinner once in the holiday. I would not want miss out on the apres experience in St Anton for instance great, sing song dancing fun aided by several beers.

I think that the genuine apres (about 5 o'clock) beers are the most enjoyable. They're the ones that you really need and are in the mood to make the most of (preferably still in ski boots, etc). It certainly seems to be my favourite time for dancing on tables and such like

My apres ski consists of 2 vin chauds/gluweins at the end of the day and then dinner and sleep. How middle aged is that???

I admit to being pathetic and a wimp.......by 10.30p.m. I am in bed if not asleep, after a days commando training (trying to keep up with my family) I am on my knees!

I am also a total wimp. A beer or two when I get back to the accommodation/
bar then something with dinner. I don't think I've been up after 11pm yet and
am quite often asleep by 10pm!
I can get blotto at home and figure if I've paid for the holiday/lift pass I'm not
gonna spend my day hungover/sick etc. I get a sore enough head at 3000m
without adding beer/wine to the equation.

Depends who I'm with and whether it will be a powder day tomorrow etc etc. I can stay paced drinking til 2am then be up at 8 for 1st lifts but I wouldn't if I knew I was going to be going hard the next day. Euro 5pm apres definitely seems to be the most fun and in America its often the only "apres" atmosphere you'll get, but it can easily lead in my experience to the "quick lie down " at 6.30pm that turns into a all night sleep with no food.

I am certainly a believer in the immediate apres beer in the dwindling light: the heady combination of malt and hop intermingling with the rosy glowing faces and eager stories, to be followed by a tasty snack and bottle on vin ordinaire before continuing tout droit for the main attraction of bar hopping and loosening up the limbs for the next days (or hours if you score) action.
An alpine morning is always enough to sluice away a groggy head, and by lunch you'll be skiing like a god, might even want a beer to wash it down and reflect upon the fine view and your amazing skill and agility.
There are various people who believe skiing and alcohol don't mix, but they have obviously to little mastery over one of the disciplines which leads to an understandable reluctance to engage in them both simultaneously. I applaud them in their abstinence making the mountain safer for all, but beseech them not to evangelise too much lest it become an issue for those practising members of the responsible drinking crowd who enjoy some sauce with our muscles.

Kaiser, I'm glad that there are some like minded skiers on here. Got the impression on the PSB that there were some people there who did not fully appreciate my (and my son) preference for mixing the skiing with some good old fashioned pub crawling.
Not many references on here to room parties. If you're a large group this is a good way of having a smaller get together, plus it save quite a few Euros in France.

Kaiser, an excellent first post. My feelings exactly.
Cymru am Byth, I'm with you one this one, enjoy the skiing, but enjoy the socialising as well. If I'm having a big one the next day then I'll take it easy, otherwise four hours sleep for a week does me fine.

Thank you kindly for the warm welcome, I confess I have appeared here in another guise last year, before being cruelly seperated from my email address (and workspace) by evil small minded bosses.
I find even with a group of three or four there is significant pleasure to be had in the simple process of cooking for one another while doing a Keith Floyd with the wine. Sometimes some impromptu dancing might take place in the cramped confines of an apartment before being harshly remonstrated with in a variety of languages. (None heeded naturally - we are British are we not?) A wonderful and cheap preparation for any later exertions.
Ahhh... I cannot wait....

up for brekky then the first lift..a pint n something extra with lunch (usually early).. finish up at 3.30 ish depending on light n how busy it is getting back to base.. hit the apres hard (this is part of what its all about for me n boy do those beers taste good) ..
shower n straight to dinner, wine.. maybe a few pints bed by midnight.. ive too many miles on the clock to waste time in ski resort night clubs anymore.. i can put a few away but need the 7 plus hours kip to enjoy the the first runs of the day..

We tried the two options last year with the result that the earlier session (starting 4.30 p.m) finished with us stumbling out of the bar giggling and one of our party declaring "I've had a great night!" only to be reminded it was actually only ten past six! She later woke up after a nice 3 hour snooze, arriving at dinner raring to go out dancing. The rest of us were far too tired after early-evening drinking and were in bed before 10. We blame the altitude!
This year we circumnavigated the question by staying in a fully-catered chalet where we were the entire party, and drank around the dinner table instead.

Depends on where I am, but my preference is early. After an adrenalin filled day the first few drinks in the company of your skiing buddies are priceless. To go back to your hotel/chalet sleep, shower and change then go out seems such a waste.
When I was younger I always felt that when I found myself dancing in ski boots I knew I'd had a good night.

I like to ski from 9 till 3 then go home and get changed, have a couple of pints till 6 or so then home for dinner. After which start some real drinking and then back in the pub from 8 or so. Some nights go on to a club others just stay in the pub til twelve or so. I find that if I do go to a club my skiing does suffer the next day untill around 11am.
