@davidof, would you be able to tell us what kind of airbag? |
He didn't want to say and I don't remember but I have a photo somewhere, I will see if I can spot what make it is. It is with the importer and going back to base to see if it is user error or some kind of fault. Most likely is user error but given all the recalls who knows. I guess these things happen now and again. The slide he was caught in would have been exactly the kind of thing where an airbag would have been ideal.

Well I managed to deploy my airbag twice in a matter of days last week. First in my hotel room as I was connecting up the canister (user error) and the second time a few days later when I got the trigger caught on a small sapling tree (user error again!). Neither seemed to take much to make it go off. I've got a BCA Float 22.

Ok just checked. I'm not allowed to say more for possible legal reasons. It doesn't appear to be a user error but that is only the importers opinion and is not related to any recent recalls but an analysis is being made. If I hear more I'll post but was told "don't draw any conclusions until the manufacturer has done his investigation."

@stanton, the Austrian guides with them were under "house arrest" for a short while - but were later released.
On the same day another two were killed only 20km from that incident.
It was crazy weather here on Wed with gale force winds in the valley and bonkers windy at 2200 (I turned back after only a short tour) so at 3400 would have been even stronger, and the Austrians were advise NOT to go, according to various reports
It's almost a heuristic trap in itself, being stuck in a refuge due to the conditions, and probably being on one week holiday, choosing to carry on regardless of advice rather than loose a day.
There's more updates here http://www.ledauphine.com/faits-divers/2015/04/03/la-quatrieme-victime-de-l-avalanche-va-mieux
As you might see at the bottom of that report, just in our area there have now been 21 fatalities.
Further Edit been a major new Airbag effectiveness study - see off piste thread.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm not finding it easy to find the answer.
What's the statistical profile of avalanche deaths? What proportion were skiing with a qualified guide? What proportion had proper equipment? What proportion were ignoring normal good practice?
Essentially - and without wanting to be insensitive or judgemental - I'm interested to know whether most accidents were self-inflicted or random accidents.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

All off-piste accidents can be classified as "self-inflicted" as it's a personal choice to ski the avalanche terrain. The only thing guides can do is to take you to what is deemed to be the best option in the current conditions, which will never be 100% safe. And even if the probability of an avalanche event is 0.001% it can still materialize and become a 100% for those involved.

@Jonny Jones, I will await someone with better information to reply, but it sure seems this year anyway a hell of a lot (half??) of fatal incidents involved groups properly equipped and with a guide

@peanuthead,
Can be a number of reasons but top for me is.
1..off piste guiding is big business & more people than ever want
to try it even if its way beyond there technical ability.
2. When folk have tried it with a guide one or two times they are more than likely to go it alone (in a group).
3. equipment (bags, helmets, shovels, probes, peeps) gives folks a false sense of security.

@peanuthead, i think, it's almost by definition a question of exposure. There is certainly a debate that guides may be being influenced into riskier decisions by client wishes and the need to earn a crust.

@davidof, "no worries, got my airbag" - he sounds like exactly the type of guy my guide as very disparaging about; so many people taking risks thinking they're invincible with an airbag.

The Austrian was under the snow for ten hours! When rescued he had a body temperature of 29°, and was still able to talk with his resuers. Unbelievable.
