It's amazing how many people bring illnesses with them on their holidays! flying and Airports are mass harbourers of germs/illnesses, all those people crammed in to a relatively small space and you can GUARANTEE that not everyone washes their hands after the loo, or sneezing and not wiping their hands before opening doors/touching things, or passing their papers to over at the desk, that person then touches everyone else's passports, those people then touch their faces etc. and if you survive all that, then the recycled air on the plane might get you. and don't forget money - the unhealthiest substance on the planet - easily
last season I was kindly given 5 colds and a chest infection by guests who bought colds on their holiday.

No there is no cure. Other than leaving the mountains. So treat the symptoms and Rule 5.

What a hilarious thread. The mountain lurgy is only visited upon those well 'ard, superfit, mountain climbing people who cycle up fir trees and roll in the snow thrashing themselves with birch twigs.
Just don't go anywhere near your mucous membranes after rubbing your feet in Vicks, chaps.

I came down with mountain lurgy a week after arriving in Cham and, a week later, I still have it. Just when I think I'm getting better I develop a whole new set of symptoms. First two days I just felt tired. The next two days I was in bed with full blown fever, followed by two days of minor snivels and lack of energy. Now it's gone into my lungs and I'm coughing but only down at valley level – the coughing reduces dramatically when I head up the mountain to ski.
Guess I'll just have to keep skiing

There's no such thing as 'mountain lurgy' - what you're all suffering from is bog standard man-flu as contracted by lots of people everywhere every winter. Eat better, exercise more and stay away from teenagers would be my advice.

Lizzard, no such thing as man flu. Men are just wusses when it comes to having a cold.
But you are right, mountain lurgy is just a standard cold. Bound to happen when we come into contact with people from other countries with new strains against which we have not yet formed immunity. And I think I read somewhere that the immune system is a tad suppressed in extreme cold, so it stands to reason we are more susceptible to succumbing to the new strains on a skiing holiday as opposed to a beach holiday.
Right, now that we've sucked all of the fun out of this thread with facts, let's just all return to our ideas of man flu, mountain lurgy and strange remedies. Personally, I believe sacrificing a chamois is the only true remedy for mountain lurgy.

This season and the previous one are the first two instances I didn't pick up a flu over Christmas/new year period in the resort. But I was avoiding gondolas now, just skinned up, so maybe it helped as I didn't have to share rides up with children.

Stay in student accommodation for a week or two! They're all germ carriers and live in conditions that you wouldn't put your dog in! It'll expose you to all known germs and you'll develop an immunity to everything including Ebola!

There's always that old fashioned, wash your hands, often with soap and water, and don't touch your face thingy. Plus, antibiotics don't do much for sinus infections, according to most medical journals. Just makes those nasty bugs more nasty. Try a nasal rinse, to try and flush out the sinus cavity. Do the google thing, and several different variations will crop up. But most important is to use sterile water. So boil it first, add a pinch of salt, and a smidge of hydrogen peroxide. And of course let the solution cool down before you poor into your nasal passages. I do this when I get the annual sinus infection. It usually does the trick. Need to do it several times a day, until the symptoms abate. Lots of fluids. Hot tea. Vitamin C. Rinse & repeat....

I am working on the cure, but it can't come fast enough. We haven't put our heads round the door (apart from a couple of dog walks) today. Paracetamol, ibuprofen lots of water, and ranitidine as I seem to have also developed heartburn not really touching the flu symptoms. Hubby was up all night coughing. My theory is that a one or two week trip is enough to keep the local germs at bay, but stay longer, and you are exposed to different strains to that which you encounter at home. I was just thinking yesterday that I had got over the general snottiness I always get, and bam. Could barely sumon the strength to butter a couple of slices of baguetter, never mind make soup

@Hells Bells, that is a b0llocks of a cold. Latest research says that you need to keep your nose warm - when it gets cold, viruses find it easier to find a home. So, nose warmers all round, I think.

@Hells Bells, Take care! I got back from two weeks skiing over Xmas & New Year on the 4th Jan having had a sore throat on the journey I then immediately went down with a nasty chesty cough, fevers, aches the lot. I carried on as much as I could on max dose paracetamol together with aspirin and I am only just about getting over it. I can`t help but think it would have been sensible to retire to bed for a week and I may well have recovered far sooner!

I've been in bed since I got back from skiing last Sunday night with what I thought was a cold as it started middle of last week with feeling feverish achy and very very tired to the point that I'd have to come in from skiing after lunch to sleep and had a cough. Still in bed as now I have gastroenteritis on top! Presumably picked up last week sometime from food or air or at the airport or on the plane.
I have to say I have noticed that on skiing holidays the number of people who leave the toilets without washing their hands at all let alone with soap is a lot higher than ones that do. This is such a basic thing you typically learn in childhood and becomes automatic I don't know why people don't do it. Not surprising therefore how much gets spread around especially in places where food is consumed-it's just disgusting.

What you meant to say is "This season and the previous one are the first two instances I didn't pick up a NASTY COLD over Christmas/new year period in the resort"
NASTY COLDS and 'flu are NOT the same thing. Bet you've never had 'flu!

@kat.ryb,
Its a bit of a myth that colds are necessarily mild and flu necessarily severe. Although not the same thing a bad cold can be much more unpleasant than a mild dose of flu.

@VolklAttivaS5, lack of sioap and hand drying facilities are a reason. You may even see me leaving without apparently washing my own but I will have used a hand cleaning gel as I am often allergic to soaps. Drying my hands on a damp towel may also be less hygenic than not cleaning them . Anywway, Rule 5 has now been applied.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Hells Bells, I agree with you about towels-yuck. The times I have noticed it though is when there have been sinks, soap and dryers/paper towels right there in front of them having just used them myself and they still don't bother because that's what has made me wonder when it's all been readily available right there. Unfortunately for the most part it comes down to plain laziness IMO.
