When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

my kids are spending the night sleeping in the cafe at mt hutt. pisses me off, was obvious this morning that it would be shut down with heavy snow on the access road, but it was a school ski day (aka teachers day off) so went ahead regardless, despite advice from the ski field.

now i will be dealing with two scared and knackered pre teens tomorrow and missing a powder day, only positive being that i texted the pricipal a picture of me and mrs hang 11, sitting in the pub eating a roast leg of lamb, with a nice bottle of pinot noir, by the fire, and thanked him for the free childcare of 300 children tonight, and pointed out that it was obvious why educationalists got paid such a low wage Very Happy

hang11, any idea how North Island is looking? I finally got around to booking a business trip to Auckland, and er, happened to have booked next Saturday night in a hotel in Whakapapa and, um, my ski pants and gloves and hat somehow found their way into my hand luggage. Toofy Grin

Looking good AFAIK - this is the best time of year to visit the North Island - much more chance of settled weather.

The kids got back off Mt Hutt at 5am Thursday in the end, which was alright, because 300 frothing grommets didn't get the opportunity to track it out.

So I did. The conditions up there are fantastic at the moment.

I took a few days off work this week, and went South, rode at Ohau, which is my favourite ski field on the South Island when conditions are good. There is loads of easily accessed terrain, it doesn't get too busy, because even by South Island standards it's in the middle of nowhere, and it has a really laid back friendly vibe.

The access road can be a bit sketchy if there's snow and ice on it, it's very steep with big drops and quite narrow. The far right of this picture gives a good idea.





Great views from the field of Lake Ohau - the water is really blue because of glacial silt. Good hunting for tahr on those hills.





Went fishing this afternoon in the hydro canals



Came home with a nice salmon for dinner Very Happy

Ohau is awesome. The chairlift to heaven! They also make a mean mince pie (if you eat meat) and lovely sandwiches in the shed. Has the chairlift been upgraded? We were there in 2010, went for a day trip from Wanaka and stayed for two. Stunning and great free terrain. Happy memories.

Superb end to a superb season. Epic powder day on Thursday and a perfect bluebird Canterbury day today - made me remember why NZ is a special place to be.
