First day ever at saalbach in winter today (staying with my sister and her family at their house in Zell am See). Absolutely cracking day. Vis not great but snow fantastic. Great area. Great après. Pity we had to come back to zell so early.

ianbradders, The same thought had occurred to me - I think that the whole French experience is much, much better, don't you?
By the way, I returned to the UK (for 3 weeks of purgatory) yesterday; I see that we are not in a drought situation.

Chasseur, Piccadilly, Thanks for the comments and congratulations on staying the course (despite broken shoulders, bruised buttocks, frazzled vocal chords, common or garden hangovers, etc.) Looking forward to the photos, TR's - and of course the next time!

I thought that the below extract from an e-mail I've just sent to someone who is arriving in Saalbach today might be of some use:
My 'don't miss' list (all marked on the piste map) would probably include:
•Piste 68 (blue) to Viehhofen (our favourite run)
•Gulasch soup at the Hecherhuette restaurant on piste 68 - best ever!
•Lunch at the Alte Schmiede and the Asitzbrau mountain restaurants at Leogang
•Lunch at the Grabenhuette mountain restaurant at Hinterglemm (Tirolergroestl recommended)
•Drinks/lunch stops at the Pfefferalm and the Reiteralm on the Reiterkogel above Hinterglemm
•Apres-ski parties at the Hinterhag Alm and the Goassstall (in both cases from 4pm to 7pm)
•Night skiing on the floodlit piste at Hinterglemm
Obviously not on the piste map but highly recommended:
•Wallners Pizzeria (up the main street on the left) for great pizzas and other food (and a warm welcome)
•Hotel Peter on Friday evenings when Peter puts on his magic show (booking in advance essential - I suggest for 7.30pm)
•Bobby's Pub (cheap drinks, convivial atmosphere, lots of Brits, skittle alley for kids, great spare ribs on Wednesdays, very good meal of the day every evening for 6 - 8euros, fantastic Irish band, "Cuckoo" playing every Monday evening from around 9.30pm till late).
•Underbar (opposite Bobby's) on Wednesday evenings, when Cuckoo are playing
•Mango bar (opposite Spar supermarket) for late evening 'chilled' atmosphere - Cuban theme, good music, good tapas)
•the Eva Alm - nice place to go for drinks, meals, free internet access with iPads provided
Recent recommendations by other guests:
•Evening horse-drawn sleigh-rides to the Lindlingalm
•Toboggan evening - either to the Spielberghaus in Saalbach or at the Reiterkogelbahn in Hinterglemm

Any recommendations for ski hire in Hinterglemm? Not sure what the different star ratings on type of ski mean on the shops I've looked at on-line so far or whether any of them provide ski locker facilities. We'll not be going off-piste but will do a fair amount of mileage on all types of piste.

Chasseur, Have to agree, the French way is the future. A friendly welcome, making you feel like they are there just to serve you with a genuine warmth, not that the customer is an unwelcome distraction. Those lovely French restrooms that are plentiful and clean. And the value of food and drinks in France is beyond belief.
Yep, i will probably never visit Austria, especially Saalbach ever again. Vive la France.

TT, why thank you. Good point, that T really is the weakest point in the whole circus. Is it possibly a concious decision to prevent the snowboarders from getting around?

ianbradders, spot on - I'm thinking of changing my name to Dave and starting up DAFT - Dave's Alpine French Tours just to promote the benefits you mention. Reckon it will catch on? or perhaps snowHeads could to something official - like SHAFT....

Just back from a great week in Hinterglemm. Stayed at the Karawanserai and can't fault it all although the quality apres ski meant we never ventured into the spa (whoops!). Only down side to the week was the instructor for the GF's ski school who was a bit of git. In the end took her out and she came out with us and looked to improve over last three days with my limited intruction of keep her hands in front and down the hill, benz ze knees into the turn & embrace the slope! Apologies for not hooking up with anyone but didn't venture beyond Hinterglemm and found enough to keep us all occupied. Tried 6 or so mountain huette and our favourite lunch spot was the Sportalm at bottom of 34 by the Sunliner chair...6 of us voted it the best lunch of the week but liked all the rest as well. Needless to say Goassstahl just bonkers. Tanzhimmel was buzzing later on as well but can't beat Goassstahl for madness. Looking to book again next year and find an apartment (any ideas anyone?), taking two kids as well plus a couple of non-skiers. Amount of snow was crazy and an Austrian guy told me he hasn't seen it that deep in 5 years. Bit more sun would have been nice but not complaining all in all my best ever week of skiing after 4/5 trips to Chatel

No probs, with the GF in ski school I couldn't venture too far anyway so stayed local. Met up with two other couples in the hotel and just did "stupid" with them. Great bruise by the way!

divekris, Did your theory work with your GF, posh expensive hotel will beat the memories of the ski school?
Is she hooked or not that fussed? Was all that money for the Karenwasei worth it?

Yes it worked a treat and glad did the posh hotel to kick off with. Can't fault the hotel at all and it made that first ski trip that bit special but GF more than happy to go self catering next time. Ski school was a bit disappointing and rep made a complaint to the guys in charge and I was happy to take her away after a few days. She is really hooked and was coming down easy blues very nicely and on the last day made the trip down 32a to the Goassstahl in good form. Think putting the whole experience of the decent hotel, learning to ski and the crazy apres made it complete. Already talking about next year and buying better fitting ski clobber (yikes!)

divekris, That definitely works with the wife. Happy to come and play as long as there are good facilities. Shame about the ski school, but glad to hear it wasnt too off putting. 32a is the one that goes past the Pferralm right? She has done well to get down that as it is a hard blue, in a lot of places it would be red.
OOhhhh, its going to cost you so much but i cant think of a better waste of money.

Yep that's the blue run. Less icy than earlier in the week with all the snow but she handled it well. Jäger tee at the Goassstahl to celebrate. She clocked a nice fitted jacket in a shop in town for €1k... Errr no!

Oh man...the party stuff just doesn't end! Only the snow was missing! Other than that, immense fun and piggy back ridding plus Jagers in London ce soir with some banging Brits, Germans and Mercans. Voice gone yet again... (via SMS)

Arghhh...every upside has a downside! The taxi back from Oxford is a heavy price to pay for catching a few zeds!! Bobby's would have been a much cheaper night!! More fun too than kipping on the train...hey ho! (via SMS)

I am thinking of heading out to Saalbach for a week from 16th march, not sure whether to go for a last minute package deal or do the diy fly, drive option, there are 3 of us heading out and we are trying to keep the cost down. is the drive up to saalbach fairly easy and what is the best airport to fly into?

Drive to Saalbach really is a doddle, probably trickiest part is through Germany. Salzburg is the main airport about an hour and fifteen.
Contact
's own Tatmans Tours for perfectly located apartment.
We (3) got a really good deal at the start of Jan with Neilsons staying in the Hotel Central, if budget is your thing this wont disappoint. Not saying it is bad by any means but was really excellent value.

My only ray of hope is thinking of where to go for my next week from March 16th. Will probably be a Mark Warner though.
