Hey all, heading out a week on Friday (9th). Fingers crossed that these reports of some snow next week are accurate, though whatever there is I'm sure we'll get some boarding in....keep the news coming! Thanks

Yes the lift prices are reduced
Currently in Val D' and there is nothing at all on the lower slopes, even the man made patches round the only operational lift is melting. Mid station runs are moderate but the Cats tracks are pulling up a lot of stones and there are a lot of brown patches waiting to tear your bases.
Below the glacier level there is a lot of hard icy rubble of man made snow with some occasional better conditions.
The skating rink in the resort is a paddling pool currently
The downhill course is not looking to clever, they have been making snow but it is far from ready for the inspection
Once you get up to the Glacier level the snow is old but in absolutely perfect condition. Currently nothing worthwhile on the forcast and the locals cannot remember less cover on the ground at this time of year. They need a good 2-2 1/2m to set up the runs with anything worthwhile.
The big fear is that the ground is fairly warm and a lot of streams although iced up are still trickeling meaning that what snow does fall may be more prone to avalance and there are some areas where the snow that is in sparse patches has slumped.
Im told the last real dump was some 4 weeks ago. and that was only at the mid stations upwards.
Dont know if it is related but the TexMex resturant next to the base station when up in flames the night before last. maybe they could see a poor season

i did read 125 euros for a 6 day pass somewhere.i take it from the above this is not correct.i cannot understand how they can charge anywhere near full price with only 10 lifts open

That's the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. 2.5 feet maybe.

I was in Tignes from Friday to Sunday with the Mountainsun deal. I've gotta say that I was pleasently suprised by the quaility of the snow on the Glacier and the man made stuff on the lower half of the double M. As a boarder, I hate ice and had visions of boiler plate pistes all over the mountian. On Friday in particuler, the snow was in really good nick and I'd go so far as saying that it was some off the best on piste groomed conditions I've experienced on a board, we certainly enjoyed ourselves.
Things were a bit firmer on Saturday with a few hard patches and piles of man made snow in the middle of the double M piste.things softened up again on Sunday and the man made snow flattened out. We didn't see any signs of grass poking through on the pistes that were open (there was plenty of grass to stare at in the rest ofthe resort!)
To sum up, we had 3 days decent on-piste snowboarding with blue skys and sunshine. Although limitied to the Glacier and Double M there was plently to keep us happy. We'd have loved some fresh stuff but you've got to make the most of what you've got, which we did.

while love for the conditions has not torn me apart, I too have just spent time in Tignes on the Mountainsun deal (on snow Sunday - yesterday (Tues) afternoon).
I would echo exactly that report. on=piste conditions on the glacier are really good, mostly, though there are some icy patches at the top of the red "Glacier" run, as well as just round the corner - just before you go under the gondola - on the black "Descente". Also one or two "crevasse"-like cracks appearing in each of these pistes (maybe around a metre long, and about 4 inches wide - I wasn't going to stop to check depth, though...)
The rest of what was open was actually pretty good. "Face" (if it was really closed I certainly didn't notice) and "Double M" both in good condition. Double M was quite icy and suffering a bit from flat light in the late afternoon. They were in the process of preparing blue "Claret" throughout and it looked almost ready to open by yesterday afternoon.
There were even small bits of play to be had on the side of the upper pistes, and the side of e.g. Face; this was mostly breakable crust though a few very small spots of quasi-powder was also to be found. As my username might suggest, I am a "dark sider", and there were some really nice rows of "ridges" down the side of Face where a number of boarders and skiers had fun practicing small jumps.
Enough to keep me happy playing for a few days, but not enough for a week of serious riding (but you don't expect that on a November trip anyway).
As always it was fun staying at the Melezes, and lessons with Gavin at TDC (http://www.tdcski.com/tignes) (for our skiing mates) and Simon at Alliance Snowboarding (http://alliancesnowboarding.com) well worthwhile.

beeryletcher, Gents you are clearly experts on the requirements to compact a good piste.
I, on the otherhand am not (there is a surprise) and am just reciting what the guys who do know what they are talking about are saying here in Val D'.
And yes I do know what the difference between ft and M is in french
.....and yes By this time they have usually had that level of snowfall over several weeks, but if you look at the state of some of the mid station pistes where they have had less than 1m of fall so far I am tempted to belive the guys that prep the slopes over a couple of random internet experts

kevindonkleywood,
I'm no expert either that is sure, but if Val D'Isere gets as much as 30cm next week, I'm willing to bet that 70 - 80% of the runs will be open within a couple of days of that. I've watched the falls year in year out and seen what the resorts can happily open runs with.
Yes I'm sure the guys would love 2.5m to work with, but it is cerntainly not required - you'd be able to smooth ridiculously rough back country over with that lot, let alone rolling pisted areas.
Places in Austria where the pistes are on pastures need even less.
Either way bring it on next week pleezee.

As do places in France where the pistes are on pastures. It's the altitude/land use, not the nationality, which makes the difference.

Probably at least some, because if they really do get 10cm (predicting actual amount of snow is difficult) they will be able to move snow from off the pistes onto the pistes and get a reasonable depth of cover. That's how they maintain snow depth late season anyway.

Tignes is obviously expecting snow, you can see on the webcam that they've put sheeting down in Le Lac, presumably to protect the grass.

It is dangly bits. Going to Cervinia/Zermatt this weekend and only the top half of Zermatt is open so I'm told. Daily Mail is sensationalist garbage.

It's all mainstream press isn't it? Not just the DM.

Hi,
I have been reading this thread for some time in anticipation (like the rest of you) for something decent to come along in terms of weather as I am off to Val d'Isere on 21st Jan.
So far, even though I have a fair few weeks left to go, I am 5h1t1n9 myself as every forecast that comes along seems to very much disappoint
According to the GFS model (for the past fair few runs) there has been some quite exciting forecasts for tonight and throughout the weekend as it seems to think that this area should get at least a slight dusing tonight, but looking at the radar, the precipitation seems to have done the usual thing and diverted around the Alps!
This does not insipre me for the rest of the week's forecast as Val d'Isere seems to be right on the edge of all forecasted precipitation for the next few days (exactly like tonight) and I can imagine this scenario continuing.
I'm really sorry if I sound pessimistic, but this is becoming an all too familiar situation. There just needs to be a forecast that takes the precipitation a little further South for me to feel comfortable about this next "dump" that's predicted.
I really hope Monday proves me wrong!!!!

Arrived in Tignes Le Lac this afternoon. This morning's snow didn't amount to much as everything below about 2300m was still brown when we arrived. HOWEVER, it's been snowing steadily since early evening and the streets now have a good covering of white- about one cm so far. At the very least it'll freshen up the glacier and the runs that have been completed with artificial snow. The local forecast from the lift office is for 60cm this week, so if you're coming out next week hopefully you should be in good shape.
