Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

shoogly,

ok , not sure what happened today as the same camera has taken great fotos before , some were taken early morning in the shade today. Camera did seem to be getting a bit confused and the shutter would not work????? Any hints and tips greatly appreciated. Camera is a Nikon D5000 SLR , Cehcked white balance and it was set to Auto so should compensate for the snow and shade?

roga, if it's not you must have put a curse on it and thus the beer will be on you! wink

A fantastic day on Wednesday, with the most amazing and weird light over the distant hills late afternoon as storm clouds rolled in. Bands of snow showers have rolled in from the west so all five Scottish Areas have seen at least some fresh already tonight, some areas could have another 4-6 inches - but it will be more windblown than Wednesday, so more mixed conditions but deeper stashes in the favoured locations.

Strong SE wind tonight on CairnGorm, it was already filling Wednesday's tracks before the lifts shut and before any new snow fell. Delays likely due to the roads needing dugout in the morning at all 3 Eastern Areas, check the latest in the morning. West Coast will have a jump start avoiding the high level road issue. However you don't want to be sitting at the pc watching people ski on the webcams tomorrow, so it's a day to set off anyway and adjust your destination on route if need be.

Now back to Wednesday:

^Laying down some morning tracks on the East Wall of Coire Na Ciste.

^Untouched powderfield on the West side of Fiacaill a' Choire Chais dropping down into Coire an t-Sneachda. (Lift served but beyond the patrolled area).

^Funicular crosses the White Lady/M1 Poma underpass... Shocked

^Skier tracked powder on the East Lady, by early afternoon was sweet packed powder with windblown fresh.

kitenski, I don't put the links in, they appear automatically. There don't seem to be any rules around what is and isn't disallowed or if not, why the itunes link sometimes shows up or otherwise. Warner Music Group particularly are a right mystery because of an inconsistent approach by youtube (sometimes silenced, sometimes ads / itunes).

Ricklovesthepowder, queues early season when the cover is good at the areas where novices / early intermediates are best catered for are inevitably going to be big at weekends and Scottish / English half term holidays. Come mid March when many people have done their overseas trip and are looking for their golf bats instead, there'll hardly be any queues left anywhere and instead the opportunity for long, sunny days on gorgeous spring snow. Having said that, Nevis and Glencoe have still been very quiet at weekends even with conditions that in most years would be described as very good.

Was up at Glencoe today. Snow superb, views from the top were not up to much though. Spring run and flypaper closed everything else open above the access chair.
Few queues for cliffhager chair when lower T-bar broke and queues for plateau tow everything else queue free with great snow.

Skied Lecht yesterday and snow conditions are very good with softening spring snow. The visibility was very poor in hill fog but all open runs were ideal with no ice. The car park, however, is still quite icy so take car walking over the the lodge.

Glencoe - Snow is great up top but below the Main Basin tows it is kinda sketch. Overall well worth the ticket cost. Visibility was terrible today - even when we left at 1 the clouds were hovering at the top of the access chair. Lost sight of the next Tbar up at times.

I was at Nevis today. where was everyone, it was so quiet, particularly when the forecast was for it to be brightest in the north west. Snow was a bit hard and chattery first thing but softened up really nice The vis was good most of the time right to the top of warrens and the goose but the summit was shrouded all day. had a look at chancer into back corries. Entry looked easier than usual but vis was shocking, so left it for another day!

^ Nevis was looking a bit short of snow on the webcams though, maybe that put people off?

In fact webcam wise both Cairngorm and The Lecht are still looking absolutely loaded with the rest of the ski areas looking fairly average to good.

Looks like some decent days next week and the wind is looking okay as well and the forecasts seem to be predicting cold or even colder into the half-term too, could be good snowHead

roga, We discussed that webcam yesterday. Although there is heather and grass sticking through the off piste on the front of the mountain, the goose is full down to 2/3 of the way down and that is a very large and wide ski area, even in the bottom 1/3 its no narrower than many of the runs elsewhere in scotland, the warrens run was in very good condition as was the short summit run so circuits were possible, but to look at that webcam you would think that it was going to be rock skiing. I dont want them to show a full snowy piste and say that conditions are perfect when they are not, but they must have put a lot of people off with that picture.

DaveMcSki, interesting to read what you say. I know the runs at Nevis can be quite different lower down to further up so makes sense.

I think they may well be shooting themselves in the foot quite badly with that view of the mountain, might be time for them to think about moving the cam (or letting that one break!) so that view doesn't give any more people a false impression.

Glencoe is now looking pretty awesome on the cams though!

Glas Maol today at 3 pm

Fifespud was introduced to scottish skiing today. He didnt say so but i reckon he thought it was better than the 3V or the 4V on account of the limited uplift meaning the pistes were not overcrowded!

It was a great afternoon Dave. Just as well you didn't have the camera at the ready when I fell off the Poma! The initial pull was quite brutal, when I saw your sixteen stone frame airborne I should have anticipated it a bit better.

Some of you maybe wondering why the sign is in french. That is because although they are happy for us to pose about the 3V and PDS, the french know that the spiritual home of skiing is Glenshee, and there are hoards of french people currently staying in the chalets around Blairgowrie.

The weather mostly fantastic as you can see.

And almost as quiet as the trois valees.

Just spoke to someone at the place we're staying at in Carrbridge, apparently snow still on the ground there (not having completely gone since mid-December), and they're dreading more ... lol, broke the happy news to her that there may well be some next week down to lower levels snowHead snowHead

Apparently bookings are absolutely massive and the area (Aviemore/Carrbridge) will majorly rammed so if you can avoid and go the week after probs a good idea, apparently getting quieter around the 20th.

Glencoe was excellent today - where is everybody? Queues non existent and cover has improved through the week all the way down to the top of the access chair. 2 fair sized kickers built on the 'other' side of the plateau poma.

Pictures I will put in a separate report because I can't be bothered to resize and upload again...

Just back from Cairngorm. Absolutely fantastic. Tonnes of fresh soft stuff. The east wall, west wall, coronation wall - all brilliant. Great snow all the way down to the Coire na Ciste car park. Pretty quiet too, although as Roga said, they are expecting massive numbers next week. All the hire shops are refusing to take more bookings so equipment may well be in short supply too.
