Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sorry did not make it back on here yesterday, now it is very late so just a quick update.

Today we did the Vin Chard Tour of the Paradiski from Les Arcs to Champingy. Did not make it to Mont Albert as well. Sorry for any spelling mistakes it is late. The light snow fall over night had made the pistes quite good on the Les Arcs side but there was not a great deal of depth and the hard packed snow from the past few days was just underneath. It was very cold most of the day but the best snow was over at Champigny just before our lunch stop. About 10 cm of fresh snow. Very nice. Villaroger remains closed due to lack of snow at lower levels and there is only two runs open down to Peisey, the red and the blue, both very hard packed and icy. Going down to Vallandry is a challenge as the snow is mostly from canons, icy and hard. Most runs above the mid station of the Transarc or over in Arc 200 are in great condition so if you stay high you should have a good holiday.

To quote one person. 'The snow is sick and the jumps are awesome'. Oh to be young again Toofy Grin So dispite my wish for fresh powder, those on holiday right now think that the conditions are ok and for all those on there way out the conditions are improving all the time.

Be warned, you may well need chains if you are heading up the mountain in a car in the next 24hrs, it is still snowing outside. Very Happy . The warning signs are on at the start of all routes up this afternoon. If you are out in Les Arcs drop by George's Wine bar in Arc 1950 for a drink. I am there most days from 5pm to 6.30pm. Hope you enjoy the discounts I have arranged for everyone with the ESF and some sports shops. PM me if you want further details.

allanm, Can't see any difference on my copy of last years piste map and the new one linked but snowcrazy did clearly defined the rule as runs missing or changed in Arc 2000. Barmont aint in Arc 2000? I think he was telling porkies or suffering from altitude sickness wink Laughing

Blue Bar (I think that's what it's called) on the front de neige just down from Vagere, I'm sure has WiFi

Further afield - Bar Mont Blanc (vallandry), Flying Squirrel and La Vache (PLan-peisey) all likewise, and free.

Dittto Maccy D's in Bourg if you're heading down for a shop.

Would love to use the free wii fi and i shall hopefully be doing so after xmas but i've not got a laptop only my desktop. :S

JO bar also has free wii fi just outside of belles challes which is where i'm currently situated.

Got the GF doing her first toe edge turn on her board yesterday woo. Though there are a ton of flats around so going slow for her sometimes results in alot of unclipping and walking. If anyone sees a green boarder wearing a bright green dakine backpack its me.

Also don't get the 5pm funiclaire down to bourg it was like being a sardine!!!

Just back from Arc 2000. After worrying there wouldn't be enough snow there was plenty with the higher pistes in great condition. It was cold all week but the last two days were really freezing - thank goodness for neoprene masks.

Loved:

Our wonderful chalet.

Skiing from first to last lifts - even being followed down by the pisteurs a couple of days.

The variety of piste - our group could stay together whether they were up on an off-piste ridge with others on piste, doing a couple of runs before heading off somewhere else.

The black run with big fluffy moguls.

Tree lined runs in deep powder yesterday.

The random three piece band at the top of Grizzly with free vin chaud and pickings to celebrate the formal opening of the season - surreal.

Empty pistes because of the time of year.

The soup at a bar/restaurant in Vallandry.

The pizzas from the takeaway near the ice rink.

Didn't like:

The flat spots - I've never been to a resort with so much skating, walking, poling.

Strange layout of resort village.

Had such a fabulous week with my lovely group of people in a fab chalet. Ski life doesn't get much better. We're going back next year Little Angel

(free wifi in the pizza place and the Crazy Fox Pub)

thefatcontroller, I did not say the rules for the map changes were only Arc 2000 bowl. So allanm, is correct, that is one of them.

Another as bertie bassett, has already spotted was over in Arc 1600. The big one is that the Varet Black is now finally gone, before you tell me it was not there last year, it was on some maps, depends which copy you have and it is still on some maps/signs in resort even today, but for safety reasons it will not be re-introduced. It was open a few times last season, but not very often and then only pisted at the bottom for the run out.

There are other changes as well which were smaller, like the piste down to the new Plagnette lift has been straightened out coming from the AR side and does not go round the small hill now and the start of the Arolles piste also in Arc 1600.

The Tommlet lift has been cut in half, Gollet is gone but the piste is still there and the new lift in Piesey is marked but not open. Big news for next season, if it is approved, new race piste in Arc 1600 and changes to the mont blanc and deux tetes. Enjoy them this year they might be gone next year or by 2011.
Todays update to follow.

Again we only skied a little in Les Arcs. I started early with empty pistes from 1600 across to 1800. Well groomed in the morning but worn by later in the afternoon on the way back and icy.

From the top of the Transarc across and down to the V. E. was fun on the higher well groomed runs but very hard and icy down into Peisey. Across on the La Plagne side we found great powder off the Roche de Mio on the Invernese and Carella areas. Good pistes down into Plagne Centre and back into Bellecote la Plagne on the way home. The route back to the V. E. on the Les Coches side was very hard packed, busy and icy in places.

From the top of Peisey back to Arc 1800 was well worn in the afternoon and the lower slopes do need the forcasted snow. Going down from the top of the Transarc into Arc 2000 and 1950 was still the best snow conditions in Les Arcs.

BUT now it is snowing right down to Bourg and everything could be changed by tomorrow. If you are driving out in the next 24hrs you will need chains or winter tyres to get up the hill.

You boys are keeping me going through the week. Keep up the news round.

We leave (hopefully...) Boxing Day for a late evening arrival in 1950. Can't wait to see my skis again!

PS FatC - don't tell me the 1950 prices have gone up again?! Where've you been drinking - has Belles Pintes stopped its happy hour?

I reckon I'll be camped in Georges Wine bar, where you get a good value drop of plonk, if you buy by the bottle. wink

Today the snow around 1950/2000 was fantastic. Lovely creamy, dry snow .. not too busy either!
It snowed most of the afternoon .. and kept going into the evening. Visibility higher up was poor .. but should mean tomorrow, the slopes will be fab yet again.

We had to use chains going up on Friday. Road currently looks in a worse state, so glad I kept them on, for the run down next Sat.

srooks, where are you staying. Drop down to George's wine bar after skiing for a drink and a chat. Hope to see you and any other snowheads there in the next couple of days or after boxing day.

JimW, I will be in George's from about 5pm day after boxing day I hope. See you there.

Today's conditions:
Another great day. Fresh powder up to our knees and not crazy cold. Now it feels like the winter has arrived.

Today started early with the snow plough near my place at 7am. A good sign I thought so I got up early. I was so pleased I did.

On almost the first chair when it opened in 1600 and was greeted with untracked powder down to Arc 1800. All the linking lifts to Arc 2000/1950 were closed and not due to open until 10.30am so those I was meeting would have to enjoy themselves till I got there.

Went down to Vagere and back up then did loops on the untracked powder back to Arc 1800. For me the best runs of the day. Few people, fresh powder, no tracks and me. Toofy Grin Such a hard life. Very Happy

At 10.30 over to 1950 and again first tracks down the powder to marmottes. Then spent the rest of the morning in the Plagnettes area. Great powder and good training. Then up the AR and back down to the Grand Col again mostly off piste. Finally stopping for a late lunch when the weather closed in about 2pm.

After lunch a few runs on the piste in poor light with the snow falling and then to the Wine bar for a well earned drink. A great day was had by all and it seems my knee is ok for the season. Twisted Evil

Coming down the roads were bad and it is still snowing lightly with about 10cm expected tonight. Should be another good day tomorrow.

thefatcontroller, did that flat bit today. It is a little slopping but you have to push as there are to many kiddies around to go fast. But not really much of a problem. Now there is loads of snow in Arc 2000 but they have still not opened the link to Villaroger as the snow down the bottom is still very thin. Maybe later in the week.

I don't know what went before, but IMO anything above Arcabulle base station was sufficiently sloping to keep going but boring. As stood with your back to the Arcabulle base station, the run to 1950 (left) was flat and the run to 2000 (right) was uphill which made lapping Arandelieres with three boarders really fun Twisted Evil

snowcrazy, andytb, Doesn't sound like they have done much. Hate the flat bit so much that going back to the apartment in 2000 from Peisey we prefer to bypass Transarc and come back in via Vagere and what was Col de Fretes now the quicker Arpette. Le Lac and Edilweiss are nice runs and pop on Marmottes and all flat bits avoided.
