AlainR,
I'm going to be staying in the 5* 'Le Grand Aigle' from the 4th Jan. Any report back/tips from the hotel would be greatly received.
Also, thanks again to Snowangel (and everyone else) for the great reports this year!!!

If I get there on a reasonable hour on Saturday, should be about 2ish
Are there any drag lifts in Monetier which are free?
I think the Col may have reopened according to the Hautes Alpes website the map doesnt show it being black (shut).
|
|
|

Christopher, you can get a debutant pass which allows you to use the lower beginner (and i do mean beginner) slopes at monetier for just over a tenner.
|
|
|

snowangel., That doesn't seem worth it to be honest. All I will want is a couple of runs on the nursery slopes to get back into it and I will get bored after that. Therefore a fiver a go isn't worth it.
Just have to wait for Sunday morning then! so so close now!
Thank you very much for those delightful pictures and the information as always .

snowangel., you working at the lift offices in Chantermerle? are they by the pistes? I may pop over for a chat.
Ahhh I'm considerably calm, and suprisingly so is my dad about the driving. All will be good, excitement is overiding any feelings of fear.

Christopher, We transfer by coach to Serre Chevalier from our flight which arrives in Turin on Sunday a.m. I saw this post on another forum which was cause for concern http://pistehors.com/news/forums/viewthread/228/ ...
"The French side of the col de Montgenèvre has reopened but the Italian side between Clavière and Cesana looks as if it will remained closed until the 23rd of December according to Italian police. There has been a couple of meters of fresh snow and the avalanche risk is at maximum which is preventing road crews from clearing the route. "

hmmmm.... interesting stuff.
That has crushed all my hopes of an easy journey.
Don't fancy the 4 hour journey through the Frejus tunnel, but it is the only alternative.
Just hope that the avalanches will be triggered.
Yeah the lesson are sorted thanks.

Chasseur, No need to rub it in.
Been through it once this year, that was boring and expensive enough. Missed the turning for the Col de Mont Cenis on the motorway and ended up going through the tunnel after a series of stupid mistakes.

moffatross,
When does your flight get in? I think you're with Neilson too, aren't you? Just wondered if we might be on the same coach. We're on the Manchester flight that gets in at 9:15
Christopher,
Google Maps reckons 1hr50 over the pass, or add an extra hour for the tunnel.
I'm sure the locals know better, though!

Chasseur, lol... that reminds me of a wrong turning on the way back from montgenevre once, when i took a wrong turning off the motorway at Turin. Cost us 10euro to drive 20yds to a roundabout, go round it then go back on the motorway again!
doh!

ecsleath, not normal for it to be this way, it is usually the Lauteret where there are problems. Chatting to someone in Briancon on Skype at the mo, I'll get an update.

Helen Beaumont, I've recieved a phone call today being told that and it is being opened in the evening for a small period of time.
snowangel., did you say the Lauteret is shut? it doesnt appear to be on the Hautes Alpes website. http://www.inforoute05.fr/cg05it.html
Still a pain in the behind at the moment. I'm rather furstrated, at the moment it looks like we'll be going Frejus tunnel - Lautaret. We reckon it'll take about 3 hours 40 mins.
If the Lautaret is shut we'll to wait in Cesana at the bottom of the Montgenevre untill the evening when its scheduled to reopen. As we will be arriving in the vicinity of Oulx at about 13h00.

Christopher, The Lauteret was shut last Sunday, I'm not sure exactly why but there had been a couple of avalanches over the road so it was either this or the wind which was really bad. I'd be fairly sure it's open by now given the weather lately, and wtf can't they put a sign up somewhere around here or at least when the road from our resort meets the main road

Promising signs
Found on a Briancon website, translated in English.
"We have secured all the Montgenevre ski area and it would not be possible to secure 4 km of road? We must find a solution quickly. "Guy Hermitte is worried. Annoyed, too. The mayor of Montgenevre was hard to understand the Italian authorities' decision to close the Via Nazionale 30 between Cesana and Claviere until ... December 23, due to the risk of avalanches.
An economic disaster
"The week of Christmas is extremely bearer for the economy of Montgenevre and all Briançonnais. I dare not imagine that 50% of our Italian customers as well as all French people passing through the tunnel of Frejus motorway or descending the TGV Oulx can not come skiing with us! I ask all French elected to the State of the Region, the Department of Community common Briançonnais to mobilize. We need solidarity to convince our Italian friends to find solutions quickly to reopen the road. It is a vital need. "The member Joel Giraud has already answered the call with the mayor of Montgenevre:" The closing Montgenèvre cervical penalizes Briançonnais economy. I launch a cry of alarm services to the French and Italian to avoid an economic catastrophe. "
Cecile Legrand, the sub-prefect of Briançon, said "seek solutions" and issued "the assumption that the French Dirmed give a hand" to his counterparts of the trans-ASEAN.
Joint last night by telephone, Franco Capra, the mayor of the town Clavière which is cut off from the rest of Italy, was reassuring: "This morning, the road will be opened under the control of 7am to 9am. Then the pyrotechnicians try purging the mountain slopes from making avalanches. The rest depend on the success or otherwise of this intervention. "
There is slight hope that they will be able to set off the avalanches tomorow morning and clear the roads before 13h00. That gives them 4 hours if they succeed.

moffatross, plenty of stuff in the sherpa supermarket in Villeneuve, and a decent butcher next door, The Alpaga apartments were quite well equipped when we stayed there. Reasonable creperie next to the Sherpa too, and Le Pastelli in Le Bez is good value too (they used to pick you up from the apartments in a minibus).
