getting stranded....??... that must be quite an achievement in Obertauern!
Awsome photo of 'Sunday Mass'!!
Try not to base your ahole opinion on the area due to rubbish weather... Obertauern is a great early or late season resort and well worth a second visit.

Snow in St. Johann in Tirol too. Skied there this afternoon with continuous light snowfall. Visibility not so great and quite cold but snow was fine. Pistes relatively empty but did hear a few English voices.
The photo was taken part way down the run beside the Bauernpenzing gondola.

The Gamsleiten I and II, Zehnerkarbahn Gondola and Seekarspitzbahn were closed all day Saturday. What stranded people is that around 11:00 they closed the Grunwaldkopf and Sonnenlift 1 (with no apparent good reason: these are low, short chairs that are absolutely necessary for getting around), so nobody in that corner of the resort could get anywhere. Everyone rushed to the T-Bar there, which doesn't even get you out of that hole anyway.
My opinion is not totally based on the weather, although I admit that I'd probably feel better about the place if I'd been able to ski the Gamsleiten II (on Sunday everything except that lift were open).
Most everything open on Saturday was flat and involved loooooong flat runouts at the bottem. Anything a little steeper just meant that you'd end up having to do more poling at the bottom. There was a little somewhat decent off-piste skiers left off the Hundeskogelbahn, but it required skating/poling along the cross country tracks to get back the lift. There was also some OK tree skiing off the Schaidbergbahn and the Gamsleiten I when it opened, but all of it was pretty short. At least that meant some good powder skiing on Sunday, though, as literally nobody else was skiing in the trees despite the blizzard.
My girlfriend is a cross country skier, and that was total crap. The trails were poorly if at all prepared and poorly if at all marked.
I also got the distinct impression that most people were more interested in drinking than skiing. But oddly, we couldn't find any "normal" bars to have a drink in. I can only watch Germans (and they were mostly Germans, not Austrians) make fools of themselves to the same 20 songs over and over and over again (really, every place we went had the same playlist of about 20 songs) for so long.
I enjoyed myself (hey, I was skiing), but for what I'm looking for I think there are better resorts.

Hi,
After last week snow we had 75 cm in the village which stopped on Sunday but today is really heavy snow, the heaviest I have seen since moving here.
Have a look at the webcam.
There are forecasting another 45 cm !!!
The roads are getting quite bad and all cars have snow chains on. Looking at the radar there is more to come.
Nigel
I will post some pictures later.

Thanks Nigel! Have to admit I wont be venturing out in the car for a bit now, theres only so much skidding and sliding my nerves can take, probably head out to Wagrain as my son likes the off-piste there and I can sit in my favourite hut with a very large alcoholic something, and calm myself down!

Skied today -a little- on the Buchensteinwand. This is a small ski area in Tirol (1 chairlift + 3 T-bars and linked to Hochfilzen on the other side of the mountain with 2 T-bars - plus beginners' areas). The chairlift is near St. Jakob im Haus, a small village on the road between Fieberbrunn and Waidring (both ski resorts). It started snowing this morning, and it snowed and snowed and snowed. After attending to some business in St. Johann in Tirol, I drove on to the Buchensteinwand lift. With it still snowing heavily, visibility was poor. I found myself stopping after every few turns to wipe my glasses. Having gone off the track into deep snow on the flattish section leading back down to the lift, I was tempted to give up after one run. However, I persevered and had another couple of runs before retiring to warmer quarters. The snow was great when it didn't get too deep (there was about a foot of fresh snow on the piste and almost a foot of snow fell in the couple of hours I skied). Brits around - a young snowboarder from Birmingham helped me look for a ski after a further excursion into knee-deep stuff left me grounded.

DB, I do doubt some of the figures on the bergfax website. For example, the top of Dorfgastein has reported 170cm while Grossarl Tal is reporting 205cm .... but they're the same place. The top of Dorfgastein and the top of Grossarl is the same mountain.

Too much snow in Austria?.........or am I worrying unnecessarily?
I'm off to Obertauern in a little over a week. After looking at the recent weather and snow reports I see that they have had a mass of snow in recent days and that there is no real sign of this letting up in the days ahead
Should I be worrying that all this white stuff is going to endanger my ski trip, or should I be revelling in the fact that the snow will be great?
Looking at the webcams from the area it looks like people are skiing no problems. I appreciate that off piste may be a problem due to the higher avalanche risks, but as far as on piste, am I worrying unnecessarily?
I saw that last weekend the high winds whipped the snow up and caused some runs to be closed, but I guess this can happen anywhere and at any time
Can you guys, especially those in Austria or who have skied Austria in recent days re-assure me that I should not panic because unlike us Brits, the Austrians are geared up for all the snow they are having

Hi, I just arrived back from Filzmoos in Ski Amade last night - they had loads of snow on Tuesday, I had never seen so much snow. More was forecast for today and tomorrow, but the Austrians were very geared up for clearing roads, and piste bashing, the snow was fantastic and I don't think you should worry if you are wanting to ski on piste. Where we were doesn't have a history of avalanche problems, but anywhere that does they will be controlling and making safe, I am sure.

Sleipnir,
The Austrians are geared up, they even have memebers of the public working on "schnee-dienst" (translation: snow service). Grown blokes who like playing in the snow drive around with little snow ploughs attached to small 4x4's (e.g. Suzuki Jimny).
|
|
|
|

Sleipnir, seriously, don't worry about it, this is their bread and butter. A lof of time and money is invested by resorts and the government in making sure services stay open and working, and making sure the mountains are as safe as can reasonably be expected. This is just what they do, year in year out. Snow, even in these quantities, is part and parcel of winter in the mountains. The year I lived there was another epic snow year, and seriously, nobody ever missed doing anything because of snow.
If it keeps snowing like this, I suspect the main problems you will encounter for skiing are poor visibility and a few late starts as they make areas safe. But a week from now, it is probably equally likely that the sun will be shining, so don't worry about it.

Thanks DB, and Deliaskis,
It's just that only this afternoon I have been told that a friend of a friend who is in Obertauern this week has so far not been able to ski since Sunday due to snowstorms!!??
As you appreciate, it did start a few alarm bells ringing. I have been looking at the webcams and there doesn't appear to be much action...
Perhaps as Deliaskis, says, it's the poor visibility that's causing the problem rather than the quantity of snow
Those of you that are Austrian locals, any idea what the weather forecast is likely to be for the next 10 days - the one I saw showed the snow stopping towards the end of next week
|
|
|
|
|
|
Sleipnir, it could be high winds too that are causing the closure.
