@Ricklovesthepowder, sheer lack of snow. It's almost solely pastures now right up to the border on this Swiss side

We have not been able to ski in the Swiss side at all this season, simply too warm and a lot of it happens to be south facing and low. Nothing new there. But we have to take what we can get and hopefully this is simply a blip in a good snow record for the Northern Alps.
This storm will do a lot to help but might not be the remedy quote yet. Certainly the cold trend which looks to be setting up will help.
And as mentioned, even with a typical deep base and some nice fresh snow new year will always be pretty manic, you simple have to pick your times to ski have a late lunch for example and an early start and choose the right pistes. Not easy but still plenty for people to get out of their holidays I feel.
Bon fete to all

@dsoutar, I skied Tuesday at Avoriaz but will not be doing so again this holiday unless there is more snow. All those completely out of control people are very scary. My OH has already skied every available open run and is now bored! No ones fault but I certainly would not recommend anyone to come here at the moment! The resort staff are working really hard to make the best of a bad deal and I saw lots of them busily shovelling snow to keep the Super Morzine link open. But for me, all the walking, all the slush, thin snow over ice, rocks and most of all all the crowds makes me just not want to ski! On the plus side the food, wine and scenery are all wonderful! Tonight's fireworks were fun too!

Two parents with three children booked for Les Gets on Saturday the 27th. What are the experts views on cancelling? Will the dumps over the weekend really make the conditions good enough even for enjoyable skiing?
We have booked directly with airline, ESF and Chalet? Probably will get ESF money back? Possibly can change airline?

Les Gets have just announced they are opening their entire ski area from this Sunday 28th.
Given they only have one hard icy run open at the moment, it will surely take them a tremendous amount of work to achieve full opening in the few days before the 28th...
...but perhaps I just think that because I leave here on the 27th

^ Challenge isn't the beginning of the description I would use to get all of Les Gets open even given the forecast of about 20cm of snow this weekend.

Here's hoping that the forecasted snow arrives and that lots of work enables the Les Gets opening to take place for all those arriving next weekend, or this coming weekend.

We have been stuck in crosets in Switzerland. 5 of us waited on hand and foot by 6 staff as only guests. Bless them.
3 chairs to Avorias, but only for season passes.
Option to drive to Chatel to pay a full pds pass to ski a few runs.
Went to verbier but lack of links and volumes of Swiss and English from chamonix made for poor runs and boredom afterv2 days.
They sre trying to open 1 run for their new years guests but our hotel has had 3 families cancell and they are hoping the forecast snow will help. The sun and high winds over night , mid week has not helped.

@5RED, From Mt Chery it looks very much like they've pisted most of the runs going down into the bowl. I have *no* idea how but there is some kind of base for whatever falls to stick to and it'll be cold enough to make snow. At the top of Mt Chery there was about 20cm...

That sounds very positive. Looking at the webcams it looks like there is some base which is probably froze so if the snow falls as they say on Saturday it will be on top of a base which should make conditions reasonable to good??

It's much colder here in Chatel since last night. No new snow so far but clouds in the sky and feels as if it's changing. At least it's cold enough to run the cannons now.

Snow cannons running all night in Les Gets, looks like they are expecting enough natural snow on top of that to make it worth while

@MeMyselfandI, looking at the live Mont Chery webcam I see a scraped 1cm of snow at the top....?
@Wrekingirl, yep, they're blasting the cannons down to village level in Les Gets, very cold here this morning.

@DJL, should make it a little better for NY week now. The cannons are going full blast on Super Chatel, I can see them from my window. It's another lovely clear sunny day. But much much colder was about -7 here in town this morning, just getting above freezing now.

@5RED, it's totally bare at some points, thin layer with solid ice underneath in others but in the sheltered areas at the top the snow was up to mid calf.

The resorts are feeling very confident about this weekend's forecast. They opened the link today from the top of PLJ into Lindarets where previously it was being patrolled and only PDS season pass holders were allowed over it. Avoriaz have also announced this evening that there are now no restrictions on lift pass sales. Going to be busy up there then!

I skied today up at Avoriaz and it was a definite improvement over Tuesday. We chose to drive to Les Prodains because the link via the Super Morzine bubble involves a fair amount of walking, especially on the way back due to the lack of snow. The snow cannons were blasting away and the small amount of snow that had fallen had helped too. Although my husband already had his lift pass I did not but it was easy to buy one and no one checked where we were staying. As Sarah says it has been announced they will start selling the PDS passes this weekend rather than just the Avoriaz ones but I think it will need a lot of snow and hard work to get much of the lower areas open and I'm not sure how much value you would get out of a full PDS pass.
There were still an awful lot of completely out of control folk on the slopes but I guess the icy bits etc make it harder than usual to remain in control? The fewer open pistes compacts everyone together too. Having talked to some folk in lift queues today Morzine ski school apparently cancelled a lot of lessons so those skiers may have been up at Avoriaz without the input they needed from instructors?
I have never liked Avoriaz as a resort, and never will, but hats off to the local workforce for doing their best to keep the pistes usable.

Woke up to white stuff here in Morzine, difficult to see in the half light but I`d guess several inches of snow have fallen. Lucky for those of you arriving today. We are trying to book in somewhere else not too far away and stay for the next week as more snow is predicted

Down at 1000m in Chatel. We have had around 5/6inches over night. By this time tomorrow around another 40-50cm should have settled.
Geneva Airport has been showing a lot of delays today although think thats more from flights inbound as they seem on top of their runways. Snow is right down to the lake though and getting heavier.
Piste conditions tomorrow I think will be pretty exceptional. Off piste, well, if you are on somewhere familiar that you know is more pasture and less large rocks then it will be fun too!

Yep as per @R555MAC's report, a good 5 inches or so down overnight now and it's still coming down hard. It's also fairly windy here in town and yesterday the Office de tourisme site warned of possible lift disruptions due to wind so we'll see. If we get a clearer spell later I might head up. Totally different sight to the past few days
Good luck to those on transfers today. We have friends due in early evening, expecting now that they might be delayed due to knock on effects. Fingers crossed.

Yes on an early evening transfer ex GVA so hoping delays and disruption doesn't increase beyond current status. Unfortunately this has probably been the worst week I've had in over 70 weeks so maybe was due one but being stuck in the airport would just be the final kick in the teeth

Hey @summer, I'm based in Champery next week for a few days. Should skiing not be imminently possible in Champery do you know if the cable car/lift will be open from the village enabling me to get up to Avoriaz etc? Thinking of pre-purchasing an online PdS lift pass, just in case there's any kind of limited availability when I arrive, or am I getting concerned about nothing?

There is so much snow in Les Gets village but most runs are closed until tomorrow and I'm not enjoying the first proper shovelling session of the winter. Road to Taninges is very blocked up. I've got brand new winter tyres on and had to make a quick run earlier, was wishing I had the chains on, especially with all the people walking down the middle of the road.

I don't understand. Was there a large dump of snow in Avoriaz this morning? The webcam that pans across the rooftops show that it is very cloudy but the roofs have the same amount of snow on them with the same melt patterns as were there yesterday. I can clearly see same bird footprints as have been there for days. Do birds make footprints?
Ok, now that I've talked about the weather can someone advise me as to the closest ski hire shop to Club Med. Heading out there in a couple of weeks.

It has been tipping it down in Avoriaz all day. I've just got back. It's very windy even in the village. Down lindarets to ardent fresh tracks every run. Home run to bottom of prodains also now very snowy. Hope it keeps coming though, more still required as the rocks aren't far down if you stray off the pistes.
