nozawaonsen,
They know how much snow they need by Mid Jan to last the season . The ground begins to warm up Feb onwards.
Its not just that. Dutch & Germans especially will not bother if
conditions are not good. They would save there money.
Lets hope for a massive dump !

The local Farmers have called this one right hopefully.
Significant clash of weather systems Tues/Weds with snow high up.
Thursday 26th onwards we will snow at all levels.
Farmers predict min 0.5M.
Maybe we get the perfect storm (repeat of Hurricane Andrea) on the Arlberg Axis
Pistes on Rendl in really good shape & the place to be today why all the new inbounds (tourists)are on The South side : |
Are these the same farmers who are now calling an early end to the season?

stanton, or anyone
are there any other websites you'd recommend for up to date info about off-piste skiing conditions in St Anton and Arlberg area? I'm thinking of something similar to Davidof's pistehors, for example.
Or recommendations on local guides to use?
We 're in St Anton 12th - 19th January.
And looking at the snow conditions, I'm beginning to conclude that I've got a week of sticking to the pistes ahead of me
My favourite quote this season. From http://www.epictv.com/media/podcast/not-powder-skiing-its-sht-fck-skiing-|-likebomb-skiing-ep-1/269617?t=293
"I guess there are two ways you can tackle sh**-f*** conditions.
You can complain about the lack of pow and get drunk.
Or adjust the bidings (to) 21, pick the proper skis, and just have fun with what you get"

Och there's still plenty to be done away from the crowds you just can't open it up in case of land mines so for us boarders it's short turns and some bushwacking. All the usual sidecountry stuff is still being well utilised and its still pretty soft thro the chopp. Right now there are lots of folk struggling on the piste hardpack and cannon snow, esp on boards, feeling a but amateur again at times myself but there seem to be more crap skiers around just now, prob just the german holidays.

Ah, stanton and your magic animals ZAMG (i.e. The data used on the Bergfex site) have been predicting snow over the weekend for a few days now (like they predicted the tiny amount yesterday).
i think the cows and sheep have just learned to use the internet like the rest if us:)
Russian week == Russian Bank holiday?

sah,
The Russians have Public Holidayvfrom 1-9 Jan . Next week is the big
week. Familys ...
I admit a couple of my snow predictions ovver many seasons have not materilised however ZAMG frequently gets it wrong evety seasson for this specific axis (Arlberg) where we have southern & northern ridges.
Listen to the cows & then look at the moon put your finger in the air to feel the wind & temp after that look west !

how true! Some rather clueless relatives were borrowing my apartment one half term and had a hire car with no snow tyres and hadn't been able to get any chains for it. I was keeping an eye on the weather, including GFS and Chamonix meteo which is usually better than several others, and the signs were for a really big dump over Friday night, just before they had to drive back to Geneva. So I advised them to get some chains, in the ski hire shop just down the road. The man in the shop (notwithstanding he would have made money on the chains) said no, there wasn't going to be any big dump of snow.
They missed their flight........

True... But for 1 to 2 days in advance they are generally a good guide. They tend to get snow amounts wrong but they do know when fronts are coming through several days ahead of time.

Guys, Its too early to get excited , but definitely signs of a change in the weather pattern a week out . No forecasting of huge snow dumps or really cold weather, but hopefully more normal temps by next friday /saturday allowing the snow cannon to get going again.
I hope so , as I am out on the 26th !!

Snow cannons are going at the moment.
stanton, from what I've heard, drinks aren't cheap at the lap dancing place at the Alte Post (Insiders) either, something along the lines of €7 for a small beer

Had some good powder today at Sonnenkopf but it got pretty heavy lower down in the trees. Going for a bit of touring tomorrow, not sure where yet.

I thought St Anton had escaped the lap dancing thing, pretty disappointed to see the place at the Alte Post. How long has that been there, I don't remember seeing it before?
If people want that kind of entertainment they can go to Ischgl, St Anton is about the skiing (OK, also the drinking).
Is the "Hells Club" also a lap dancing bar?

I don't know how it was in the past, but last year it was only open in the evening. It's a great little place to stop for lunch in Stuben.
