@nozawaonsen, Although it was just 1 run, 06Z, I guess it does imply there is something out there, potentially.
..and the 12z run yesterday hinted at something similar.
I'll grasp any straw right now.

Yep, although the control does briefly go very cold. Clearly though a single outlying op run in FI isn't exactly much of an indicator (none at all really). On the other hand nor would I necessarily expect it to immediately be picked up on in the following run. If it crops up again in the next 48 hours it might be worth paying attention to otherwise just one of many variants albeit an interesting one.

@AthersT, @nozawaonsen, where are you getting the precise long and lat for the resorts? If I'm going to move my weather pages from using wetterzentrale I'd better double check all the co-ordinates!!

@kitenski, I look them up on wikipedia, it gives long and lat on the right hand side.

The last snowfall round these parts, principally on Saturday, was very light, about 70-80grammes/litre. As a consequence the strong winds earlier in the week have done this:
so we are still waiting to really get the season going, it is skiable but lots of rocks here and there below 2000m.
I remember a couple of years back when they had massive snow in the Southern Alps a couple of friends did a week's tour down there. When they got back I asked them about the awesome skiing they must have had on 3 meter snow depths. Well apparently the wind had ruined the snow, it was a mix of icy hardpack, ruts and crust.

Looks like warming a few degrees above seasonal average for a few days then back to normal in the eastern Alps... (looking around Kitz in particular)
Snowforecast (whichever engine they use) has no snow after Saturday, but Bergfex has more snow in a week and generally cooler temps...

No that's the Isere, so Northern Alps but the conditions are not as good as in the Savoie.

Westerly wind, course faces north east so maybe not hit by the worst of it....and it's through trees
At least it will have a full course - if visibility ok - not like the detour 2 years ago

Magnificent conditions in the Savoie today. Sun, less cold, superb snow cover. Am sitting in a slopeside cafe with a coffee costing less than on the High St in Havant, which is a dump. But looking down the slopes the piles of artificial snow under the cannons suggest that they're not taking for granted the continuation of good times leading into the crucial 4 week school holiday period.

On the webcams for Kitzbuhel (on Bergfex) the other day I saw them scooping up snow in to lorries from the valley floor. That may have been specifically for race preparation.
Article a week or two ago described snow farming in Switzerland; they make snow at the end of the season and store it in a shady location under half a metre of wood chip through summer and only lose 20%!

In courchevel, I was told that they will continue to make snow if conditions are suitable as it gives them more to work with and makes the pistes last longer to get to the end of the season. This came about whilst I was there, despite the large amount of snow falling, still plenty of snow cannon piles appearing around the area creating some great kickers

If your job is to manage the resort's resources and you have the capability to make artificial snow then it makes sense to make snow when you can in winter.

06z GFS has dry and above average temperatures across the Alps from Sunday through till next Saturday. Not unpleasant.
Next Saturday brings a cooler incursion and snowfall to the northern Alps. Clearly though There are a spread of options GFS is running through at that range so I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it yet.
Temps look relatively mild for Kitz on Saturday. Could be sleety at the bottom.

Indeed Snowforecast has FL dropping to 1150m in the afternoon and snow showers after heavy rain in the morning. Bergfex has FL below 800m all day and snow...

@buchanan101, Bergfex has a snow line (not freezing level) of 820m in the morning. So rain at the finish is unfortunately possible. That falls to 570m by lunchtime. So rain, sleet, snow could all be in the mix.

Thick clouds in the morning, sleet for a while in the valley, 5-10cm of new snow on the mountain. Also a lively wind.

Sort of similar now, wind scoured slopes, mix of icy hardpack, wind blown pow, crust etc you name it currently off piste.
That said if the weather continues like this have to start sniffing out spring snow lines as snow is transforming!
Minus 10 at 08:30 and easy +10 in the sun at 14:00 - very tempted to drive up the road and take a look to see what it's like at 2,000.
Meant to be doing a big North facing tour in the trees and above on Sat but maybe a mellow South facing spring tour route might produce better skiing?

Ah, ok! I misread that...
And Kitzbuhel despite saying it is at 800m actually has the race finishing at 765m...

@Weathercam, I thought I'd made it clear at the time it was just one option being produced by GFS in the distance. Or did you miss that? Had I been saying wow this is definitely going to happen then your comment might have made sense, but it doesn't really.
You seem to post to this thread for one of several reasons. To mock or sneer at others, to boast about yourself or promote your lifestyle website. It's a bit of a shame really, you don't need to be so unpleasant and when you are posting on the Serre Chevalier thread you by and large aren't. So why would you come onto this thread and think it ok to behave that way? But if that's how you want to be so be it.
@buchanan101, yeah. Hope it changes for the better.

As a general note, take care of timing on warmer faces as there is quite a bit of snow in some areas and with the FL moving up above 2000m on Friday expect springlike conditions and maybe some purges.
Looking at your area sounds like poorish skiing out of the trees on north facing slopes so I would agree that perhaps a bit of winter sun is a good idea if the snow is solid enough to take the weight of a skier if it has formed a crust.

@nozawaonsen, jeees lighten up, it was only a light bit of banter with a picture of a carrot in front of a donkey (previous page) after you suggested that the Southern Alps might get a heavy snowfall for fecks sake and you get all wound up and go personal enticing others to do the same?
Insert pic of Scouser smiley, calm down!
@davidof, I'd still only consider mellow slopes........

Just a novice trying to learn from others here - looking at the GFS 12z on Meteociel, seems like there's hope for a huge snowfall in Saanen (Berner Oberland) from the 29th to the 31 of Jan - would you agree ? I know it's too far out etc, but hope is hope, right

@Odysseus, that's what the op run (black line below) went for. The difficulty is that at present it's very much an outlier. To have any confidence in it you would need to see it repeated and picking up support from the ensembles (though the actual snowfall suggestion in the chart below would almost certainly never happen and if you look at the likelihood it is more often than not only around 10-20% during that period).
More generally worth noting that 12z GFS wasn't as clear cut in extended stable high pressure over the Alps. Not a given clearly, but shows that it is not forgone.
