Rain/sleet below 1500m at lunchtime around Grenoble. The FL has dropped from over 2000m to about 1700 m currently.
There still a temperature inversion with very heavy pollution in the valleys. Speed restrictions are still in place - 70 kmh after the toolbooths around Grenoble (instead of 130km/h / 110 km/h). The rain should improve things tomorrow.

If the predicted snow arrives on 11 Feb then that might well turn in to another transfer day hell .. but it's still FI at this point. Right?
I'm driving to Sallanches on Friday the 10th (w winter tyres, chains, a bag of cat litter and a shovel ) so hoping for snow on the hills but clear, dry motorways. |
Dumb Q im sure...

Yeah, I read somewhere that it's useful to add traction on ice and a bag of the generic stuff at Sainsburys is like £1.50 so I figured why not. Plenty of room in the back of the truck. Never tried it though.

Peak-Winter and the Alps are continuing to have a poor season.
Most resorts up to ~1800m, like Val d'Isere and Zermatt, looking very brown / green in the valley and rocky on the mountain.

But the point, @Whitegold, is that many, many places have very good skiing available due to exceptional grooming and snow making...
In the last couple of weeks I have had very good skiing around Monterosa (100% open), Mürren and Avoriaz/Swiss PdS. I hear Chamonix valley is very good. Friends had two exceptional days in Les Contamines at the weekend.
So what if the mountains themselves are not as white as is typical...

Salzburgerland is experiencing a top notch season. One of (if not a record?) the coldest January's on record and two weeks of nearly daily snow helped alot too. Most of Austria snow covered at village level since 3rd of January. Only the small area south of the alpine ridge is struggling.
Many parts of the Pyrenees are having a good one too.

I'm off to Saint Gervais on Wednesday for a long weekend. There will still be snow to ski on. There may even be fresh snow on the tops. And if the FL stays low enough there could well be snow all the way from Le Bettex (1400m) and above. Either way, I won't be miserable as I will be in the mountains, on skis or my snowboard (can't decide which to take!) and enjoying a beer at the end of the day. Happy days!

That's rubbish. Two weeks ago, most cars needed snow chains to get into Val d'Isere. I drove there again on Friday evening and there was snow on the side of the road for most of the journey from Geneva.
The snow at very low levels melted this weekend, but that is normal for any winter. The pistes, on the other hand, have full deep cover.
Why do you make these things up?

Certainly one of the two coldest Januaries in the last 30 years in Austria. It'll come down to the last two days as to the final result. Preliminary figures are -3.0C below average for the month and 35% sunnier. Salzburgerland was the snowiest region and had 50% more snow than usual (though that was in the back of an exceptionally dry December), however the south was much drier than usual.

Any of these could help with that problem .... (P.S they are not ski resorts)
1. Aripiprazole
2. Clozapine
3. Olanzapine
4. Quetiapine
5. Risperidone

Rain forecast to 1900 meters tomorrow (how high is Val d'Isere?) by the Arpege model with a big weather system on Friday which should bring a lot of snow at altitude - the FL is unsure, it is not going to be that low but it could be the end of the season for some low lying ski areas if it is too high.

The original webcam photo had snow on the hillsides anyway. I couldn't see any part of the hillside that was brown/green so didnt really understand why the image was posted with the associated comment??
Meanwhile, looks like its snowing currently across Switzerland/Western Austria/parts of the Northern Frence alps.

@sparkzter, thank you, mostly I just pay attention to Noza's highly informative posts (not that I entirely understand the charts but I get the gist). Noza seems to always keep his head whilst all around lose theirs, which is surely a thing to admire. I have looked back over the thread and Whitegold is a serial offender on the misery front! I'm off to the Monte Rosa area for half term, but happy on piste so it all should be fine for us, good piste skiing, great food, great company and the wonderful alpine scenery, life doesn't get much better!

I'm in Val D'Isere (as of yesterday) & the pistes are in excellent condition. Very little ice even on the resort runs. All this doom mongering is a bit ridic. If you're an off piste demon then I can understand the frustration but while the resort isn't knee deep in snow it's also far from brown. In my skiing career I would put this season in Val in the top half of all my trips. There's no sheet ice or (my least favourite) brown slush. I have zero skin in this game. Just a one week a year skier.
I love this thread. I am a perennial lurker & hugely appreciate all the weather experts. Keep posting guys! Some of us really appreciate it.

I find the excellent forecasting on this forum as important as the invaluable situation reports. However much content is diluted with the invalid opinions of the "one week per season" tourists. Agreed this is the bulk of the market, but should the tail wag the dog?
