Some updates from the media:
access road to l'Alpe d'Huez is currently blocked
snow chains have run out in the motorway service stations to the Tarentaise
27km tailback to the Albertville on the autoroute
autoroutes haven't been able to open all the tollbooths causing trafic chaos
nearly 6 hours to do Lyon -> Albertville
TO bus carrying British skiers has crashed on the Les 2 Alpes road - no injuries reported
Access to the Beaufortain from Albertville has been closed by the police
Access to Megève is "complicated" with numberous vehicles blocking the road

I wonder why people are still asking whether they need good winter tyres ...

Gendarmerie are enforcing a snow chains rule at le Fayet to access Chamonix - snow tires accepted.
Col du Montets is still open, but for how long?

Police advise people driving to l'Alpe d'Huez to wait at Bourg d'Oisans while they sort out the situation. Numberous T.O. busses blocking the access. People not being allowed on the road without snow chains.

Trucks have blocked the road between Geneva and Bellegarde on the A40. Why the hell did the police allow lorries on the autoroutes today? EpicFail.

@davidof, excellent thread.
Sorry for all you guys out there in the thick of it
But rather warm-and-glowy for those of us here in dull dingy London
(of course, much more exciting up in the Midlands where they are having their own Snowmageddon)

Surprised by this. In the past i've seen lorries pulled of the road by the police around the Dijon area when there was heavy snow forecast in the Alps. Its not as if it wasnt forecast and also one of the busiest transfer days.

What a complete dickhead! Don't they have a snow tyre rule in France? In Austria the police would show no mercy!

@howiet, Bourg itself is remarkably traffic-free at the moment. This may be because everything is gridlocked further on, can't tell from here.

Well I am in Tignes les brevieres, drove down from Val. D isere in 10 inches of snow earlier in my rear wheel drive merc and no issues at all......on winter tyres though. Needed chains to get in the car park though! I am amazed at how much difference winters make.

Watching the carnage unfold on road up to Oz through binoculars from the warmth of our apartment, timed it right this time. Friends have been 'driving' across France for 15 hours and still not made it here yet. Seems the usual silly Billy's trying to drive until they get stuck and then put chains on, blocking the road. Vizille to Bourg is a car park, friends saw the obligatory 5 series Beemer with chains on the front wheels. Hope everyone arrives safely, stopped snowing here now but sky still threatening more. Anyhow back to adjusting juniors bindings

In my short (4km) commute to the workshop, I've had to negotiate 4 abandonded cars and avoid 1 crashing BMW (an old 750 not an X5 this time) - he was in the slow lane about 5 cars ahead, got over zelous with his brakes and hit the centeral resevation - quite impresive for 10kph!
Unpoughed roads unpassable to the uneqiped, otherwise they are fun and the sides are soft
