Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just back from dinner at our friends from Mulhouse's apartment. Apart from the fine Alsace menu (Munster with cumin seeds really works) the good news is its now snowing at 1300m in Chatel.

+1 to all the above. We were thoroughly wet and windblasted this morning, it was pretty foul Sad It did snow higher but we were in and out of the rain really all morning. Nice snow up top but windblown exposing a few icy patches, very heavy lower down and very grippy. I was glad to come in for lunch and call it a day. It pee'd down all day. Struggling to get everything dry. Fingers crossed for an improvement.

DJL, that's what we want to hear .

however, between now and the 18th Jan when we get to morzine. there will have been too much snow with impassable roads and hotels only accessible via 5th floor,
avalanches aplenty,
a big freeze so cold that Heston will be over making frog spawn ice cream in thin air.
A heatwave causing a Mega melt and forest fires, with the thaw turning morzine into a giant aquarium and then nicely back to normal for the 19th with perfectly adequate conditions to slide down some hills on a couple of planks of wood Happy

Soz for posting on the weather thread, but a couple of PdS questions (it's a bit quiet on that other thread):

Is the new Prodains lift still on track for 16 Feb opening? I think we'll tend to go up from Super Morzine or Ardent this year but we'll probably be coming down that way as the kids' ski school is in Avoriaz.

And does anyone know of anybody who'd be up for guiding some "slack country" touring for a half day or two at half-term? New skis have touring bindings and skins so would quite like to get slightly off the beaten track whilst the kids are at school.

Ta.

andy from embsay, last I heard they were still suggesting Feb. But it's France. And French builders.

More appropriate accuracy trying to get year right, months are a little ambitious... Twisted Evil

andy from embsay, I found a nice little thread about the work here and there's a comment about it being 2 or 3 months late.

Also it links over to here where there are even more photos.

Sorry, I'd read a bit more but it's my bedtime. Happy

NotMrsFS and I skinned up from Les Gets and over to Morzine today - via (sort of) the Les Gets bowl. (Does anyone see a pattern emerging here?)

Icy lower down and nice grippy pistes above around 1300m. Not as mad busy as we've seen it at this time of year - even though Les Gets village is very busy compared to last year.

FlyingStantoni, hmmm I keep reading I skinned up.... Just off out to my shed to install my new dynafit bindings onto my new touring skis and to cut my new (Unused) skins... Getting very worried about our Feb adventure with both of our navigation skills and the inevitable rocks we will be finding... Toofy Grin

FlyingStantoni, skimottaret - I have just bought some touring(ish - Salomon Guardian) bindings and skins and will be in PdS at half-term - I'd be keen to get out and do a bit of "uphill to get to some downhill" if anyone's about. Assuming I haven't binned them after being dragged round Chamonix in three weeks...

andy from embsay, I have been speaking to a few people around the area and the smart money seems to be on it being a miracle if the new S3 is running anytime this season. Having been over there a couple of days ago, it looks like they've got a lot of exterior work to do, which I don't think they'll start until after Easter at the earliest.

Thanks simonhardcastle - it may well be the kids are good enough to ski down this year anyway - and to be honest it was never busy going down at 5pm.

A great day only spoilt by the Teleski "Tour de Don" being out of action until 12.30. It is the key link between Petit Chatel and Super Chatel and onwards to Morgins and the wider PDS. Meant we couldn't get far until it opened and had to stay around Barbossine and Torgon all morning.

Snow was really very nice and the rain had given a nice solid base for the fresh stuff. The pistes were in great nick. Off piste looked quite deep in places (where the wind was at work) though we didn't venture there.

Last morning tomorrow before we head to Holland and the mother in law's for New Year. Hope the sun comes out!

I certainly see a theme emerging in FS's recent adventures and can only imagine there is some sort of weight loss bet in play and just a few days left to the end of the year. Or are you training for a go at the Patrouille des Glaciers? If so you need to buy lycra!

I probably would if I lived there - we're the same about Malham. However, I have children and I get a week's passout from Mrs AfE to take them skiing, so whilst they are having fun with Freedom2Ski I get to play out.

If I didn't have them with me I'd decamp to Argentiere - which is exactly what I'm doing in 20 days' time...

Just a quickie, beware of a very leaky oily Cornebois lift in Chatel sector. Myself, four clients and about 50 others discovered we had been fully spattered on the way up. Poor liftie at the top had to deal with an international crisis. My new ski school jacket, salopettes, helmet and goggle strap were a mess, and two of the group had white jackets ruined. Chatel are apparently sorting out cleaning etc but sadly my guys leave for the US tomorrow so no chance of getting a clean or money. It appeared to be watery grease. Hopefully they have been up with the Marigolds and wiped it all up. Smile

Wow, that was busy - I don't think there can be anyone left in the valley. Some nice snow around though to escape the hordes, but still need to exercise caution.

it looked as if that was the case as we drove up from Geneva about 7 this evening and the cars were still piling down to Taninges, round many of the bends.

Two really great days of nice weather and great snow, springlike and well mounded up by this afternoon. Very, very busy though and the traffic is a nightmare. Ardent parking was totally full this morning and there was a parking guy down the road by the lake with a big sign, turning people back or telling them to park by the lake and take the navette. We drove past him, went up and found a space anyway, hubby was prepared to drop us and go back down if need be. It was the same on the Chatel side, loads of people not showing up for lessons presumably stuck in traffic. One guy we were chatting to told us his 20 min drive had taken 1h 20 mins Sad Tonight one of our group set off to the supermarket, got stuck in a jam, turned back and went for plan b; takewaway pizzas.
I know it's New Year and a busy changeover day but I don't think I have ever seen such bad traffic and unfortunately I do ski NY and Feb half terms. Today I was wishing for the old days of term time skiing lile you marmotte16!

sarah, agreed! We've done late Dec/early Jan for at least nine years and having just been out for a walk around the village here, have never seen so many cars parked outside chalets etc. Early out tomorrow eh?!

Great ski today following the sun round Morgins Super Chatel Torgon and La Chapelle - even got some spring snow on the route over the fields back to Barbossine.

Pistes were really good from 9 - 12 then scraped and softened a bit.

Village a nightmare. Took an hour to get from Chatel centre to past Follieuse in Morgins. Our fault for leaving at 16.00 and mostly due to locals heading down the valley.

Lots of Dutch heading up the mountain!

Another two great weather days Very Happy The car traffic problems of Saturday have gone and it was easier up to the Ardent parking both days, though still busy up there. Great snow conditions on and off piste over in Pre la Joux. Soft, scraped, springlike conditions on the blue back down to Lindarets, the red was better. Today we skied over the border to Les Crosets, it was blowing a gale over there, the snow was blowing all over the place and the pistes were scraped and icy, not that pleasant although it was much quieter over there. Top of The Wall back down into Avoriaz good conditions on piste but then down The Stash back to Lindarets really scraped and icy. Avoriaz/Lindarets sectors very, very busy Sad Last day for us tomorrow, all in all a great week's conditions snowHead

Raining in Morzine this afternoon, but snowing above Super Morzine.

We did a spot of cross country today. We seem to be turning into the type of "strange French people" we used to stare at wondering why they were doing things other than regular skiing. I skinned all the way up Pleney yesterday - 500m (ish) vertical metres in just under 90 minutes with remarkably little swearing. From what I hear it was possibly quicker than the lift queue...

FlyingStantoni, Sad if I'd skinned 500m vertical I'd have been sitting with my feet up feeling self-satisfied. I wonder if the pulled muscle bore any relationship to the skinning? Makes the calf muscles work. Stretching after?

Nope, pam w, I was doing spring-recovery thingies in the car park at Montriond and was a tad over-enthusiastic about the sprinting bit.

Pedantica, there is a quite a way to go before I even break out of "lardy Fitzwilliam". I have a London Marathon place and am working on the basis that the last 6-8 miles will be far more pleasant if I weigh, let's just say, "significantly less". wink

We left this morning it looked as if it was going to be a fab day, loads of fresh snow especially driving through Les Gets. Quite a bit of traffic heading down and it was busy at Geneva with 25 minute queues at security, we ended up sprinting to the gate.

snowmam, I am pretty sure you can leave stuff at Pre La Joux Sports, definitely if you hire from them and probably for a charge if you don't, don't know about Linga.

andy from embsay, my schedule is a nightmare anyway because I'm doing every other weekend in Morzine throughout the season. Hence why I was doing sprint-recoveries around the car park in Montriond at 19:00!

The good news is that it looks like a superficial tear. So a week out of action, not a month.
