It probably won't be as bad as "total rain destruction".
There was a similar situation over the Christmas/New year period last year with quite a lot of rain and the snow held out quite well.
Also there is likely to be snow at either side of the rain. Just keep as high as you can and you may even get some fresh powder while its raining lower down.
Not nice ringing out the gloves when you get back though.

Kiters, snow-forecast is showing three days of rain at 1000m, but hopefully mid station and above will be ok. Snow forecast on Monday and colder so the snow cannons can do a bit of repair

Les gets was great this morning, made the mistake of going to Mont Chery this afternoon.
Unless it snows, do not chance Mt Chery!
|
It looked closed this morning but in good nick from afar. However, a local told me only to do it on rentals....
Is it rocky, threadbare grass or what?
Thanks in advance.

JimG2009, we were there a few days ago. There were quite a few stony areas generally, small stones but plentiful. Lievre was closed for us. The worst was the lower part of Chamois back to the village. Stones, ice and two large areas of mud showing through.
They have really neglected Mont Chery even though there were opportunities to make some snow to top up the patches last week. I wonder if there are financial worries especially with the big hold ups with the new red eggs. I'm not back again until the summer but have emailed this morning (had a tourist office advert come through) to express disappointment! I suggest more do the same. Talking to the peeps at La Grande Ourse last week they feel let down as well.

Not rocky, but great patches of mud and brush, not worth it for what there is there really.
Hoping that There will be snow today, but talking to our estate agent she said it was more likely rain.

Skiing Pre La Joux yesterday. On piste snow cover was fine thanks to the snow making. More crowded than expected for this time of year probably due to conditions elsewhere but not as bad as half term. Dont think rain will have much impact on the piste conditions

Hi,
I'm in St JdA and it is tipping it down with rain. Anybody got any recommendations on where to head in the PdS for skiing in the rain today?

Just been outside, fine rain here in Les Gets, so will head as high as possible to see if it turns to snow.
I would have thought Avoriaz would be good in this.

Chattonmill, webcam shows snow in Avoriaz, getting to the lift on the frozen rain is going to be the main challenge, but should be some nice fresh on the pistes higher up.

I will be venturing out in Les Gets this afternoon as the rain has now stopped, brighter skies, but could do with a big dump now.

Teaching cancelled here in Champery this morning, tough to teach three kids for 4 hours on two pistes! Liaisons to France were shut due to high wind and what snow there was falling was about 1500m plus.... It's got warmer as the day has gone on sadly...... Can only keep fingers and toes and any other things crossed for snow. The forecast currently on this side says a little snow Sunday but rain til then and after cold! Hmmmmmm!

Raining here in Morzine right now but it was relatively dry on the hill today and conditions were actually much better around Avoriaz than expected given the forecast. The snow has got a lot softer on piste with the milder conditions, which is no bad thing, and the holiday crowds have mostly disappeared. The Arare and Mossette lifts were shut due to the wind. There has also been a bit of fresh snow, and there were some nice bits of off piste to be had, although the fresh is wet, wind loaded and poorly bonded to the base. It was sluffing very easily coming down the Combe de Machon (it was snowing at the top, raining at the bottom). Looks like the rain will take some away at virtually all levels, but it doesnt look like it will rain as hard as originally forecast if thats any consolation.

gosh, is it that bad? There's plenty of snow in Les Saisies/Notre Dame though I don't suppose that's on your lift pass - a bit of a trek! I didn't ski today but friends who did said the conditions were the best for days, with a couple of inches of new powder and vis improving through the morning. It was dry most of the afternoon but been raining quite steadily this evening. Not too warm though - might possibly be snowing up the top (not that the top is v high here). But tomorrow the gusty winds might see some of the chairlifts closed at times, I guess. The foehn winds forecast for next couple of days could do more damage to the snow than the rain - there's not been as much as initially forecast. The speed with which a strong foehn can strip the snow from the slopes is scary.

We arrive in Avoriaz on Monday, please let the snow gods be kind and while they are at it that foehn wind can do one.
Might pick up an extra bottle of gin in the airport just incase things get really bad

Clear this morning in Morzine and a skim of ice on the puddles. Felt like Scott of the Antarctic skiing yesterday in the wind, but found some nice fresh snow on the blacks above prodains, a good day despite extensive use of the racing tuck to beat the wind on schusses. The snow has held up very well considering doom and gloop forecast, the morzine pistes are intact due to snowmaking although lots of grass showing through around and about.

Doom & gloom?
Well, actually a pretty nice (although springlike) day, and the on piste snow doesn't seem to have suffered so much...still a lot of good skiing on the north facing slopes - Linga ==> Avoriaz.
Decided to stop looking at the forecast because it's all over the place at the moment. I'll let you all know the moment it starts snowing again.
Keep the faith!

Snow is more resistant than you think and less resilient than you'd like.
And there are a whole bunch of fussy beggars around who ski one week a year, hit the jackpot once and get terribly snotty when it is never quite as perfect again.
Ho hum. Quite easily believe there's lots of great skiing around the PDS, Gd Mass, etc, etc. And if it gets sunny it'll be lovely.

Just finished a great day skiing very spring snow conditions in Morzine and Les Gets / Mont Chery.
Yes, some runs (mostly black) are closed. Yes, some runs show rock, grass, earth in more than a few places.
So what? The rain yesterday and the snow today meant the fair weather skiers stayed in bed and left the mountain to the rest of us.
Good luck to those coming next week, even if the weather doesn't improve, it's down to you what you make of it.
