i'm just back from la plagne and in the main it was gnerally very quiet, which was great for skiing but maybe not so good for business.
my main issue with skiing in scotland is that it's so unpredictable. i tried a couple of times after new year and the place was packed and couldn't get to site. then it was snowbound after a bit i start to think it's more hassle than it's worth. Sadly they give too many reasons not to go.
but i'll probably still go sometime next week. |
That's cause everyone has the same idea as you, there's loads of snow in the central belt, lets go skiing! Go now, there's no one there anymore, serioulsy last weekend was at Glencoe and Gklenshee and every lift was practically ski on.
Also for anyone thinking about heading up I've had the best snow on the east coast, don't know if it's just been weather dependant but Glencoe was pretty hard last saturday whil Glenshee was lovely and soft on the sunday. heading up to Glenshee tomorrow where the forecast is very cold so we'll see whther this still holds true

Forgot - WRT tendencies throughout the alps, our figures compare LDA with other altitude resorts. If I get a moment later I might get to list them. However I imagine it's all over - certainly causing concern here. At the end of the day, skiing is a business for some to allow the holidays for most.

Was at Glenshee today, not so nice, maybe we've just been spoiled with all the nice snow recently It was pretty icy, I think a lot of snow had got blown about and what was left had re-frozen after the warmer weather during the week.

shoogly, I'd hold your horses on making any definite plans just yet. Snow is forecast, but frontal systems could bring steady and possibly heavy snow and accompanying high winds on Sunday. At CairnGorm the Road could be a big problem, but will need to see how the forecasts pan out over Friday and how the weather impacts the road on Friday.
The Link Road between Coire Na Ciste and Coire Cas remains hopelessly blocked, with two way traffic running on the Down Road from Coire Cas, but in places this is banked 10-15ft on one side and 6-10ft on the other, which will fill quickly with even slight drifting.
However with snow coming from the North the problems shouldn't be as protracted as they were with South to SE winds and the road should be cleared quickly when wind speeds / snow fall eases. Early next week is looking more promising at this stage, but obviously mountain weather can change fast.
If you are planning to head to any of the Scottish Areas over the next 3 days, check the latest forecasts out and if possible check the official reports or phone the areas either before travelling or on route.
After some freeze thaw cycling this week there is now an excellent base in the East and a decent enough one on the upper half of the West Coast mountains. A base which promises better riding to come later in the season, so don't blow your sliding funds sitting at closed snow gates!

firstracks, Ooh! I loved the Aonach Bowl - quite steep too if you come in down the M2 as it was. I was gutted to hear that they'd taken out the lift, I used to use it a lot with better classes. Glad you enjoyed it though.

Nice snow in the gullies at glencoe today. Very windy and starting to snow when leaving so could be good midweek if it continues.

Hi scottishskier, Wher eis that run?
Only been to Glencoe 2x but was there yesterday also.
A bit icy in places (I actually like that) but the conditions were brilliant. I went to the blues on the west side (cant remember name). Snmooth enough to get some serious speed up but with a few bumps to make you react and keep you on the toes.
Had a brilliant day.
Cheers
Bob (in Glasgow, Obviously )

I've never been round that side but would quite like to try it
I'll be in a green peak performance jacket if you see me

That is the spring run. Pick of the day yesterday was probably the main basin closely followed by the spring run. Fly paper was closed and treacherous with ice.

Hiscottishskier,
I need to try that next time.
I spent most of the day going down the Happy Valey and Glades full tilt then slower down the wall..
Need to try going to the left and down the spring run, looks great.
Cheers
Bob

Just back from Glencoe. The visibility was dreadful it snowed pretty much constantly and when it wasn't you were getting wind blown powder in the face but...
The powder in the main basin and the bottom part of happy valley was awesome and well worth it
Just hoping the snow is still as good when i get back up on friday and i'll maybe get the chance to head left off the top t-bar and tackle the spring run and flypaper

Has it been possible to ski down to the carpark in Glencoe at all this season?
If so, when, and for how many days?

The runs are a lot better now compared to january.

Looking very good for a mid-week slide at any five of the Scottish Areas, all have had fresh snow over the past couple of days and further showers are coming into the Eastern Areas this evening. Most of the hard packed base is now covered with some excellent statshes of soft loose powdery snow, lower mountain runs really freshened up in the West, everything excellent in the East.
National take a day of work and ski Wednesday and the boss can't sack you day tomorrow!
