Nice pics OAP.
The tiller is a bit of witchcraft that you fit to the back of your piste basher and it magically transforms saturated mush or frozen snow into Corduroy. Its basically a hydraulic rotavator that chops the snow up and mixes it.
New piste bashers have an integrated tiller and former so that they don't have to keep swapping grooming bars.
Ours has been lying around in the garage for the last nine years. Wished we tried it a bit sooner but then we don't normally have this amount and snow, are usually running around doing other things and its heavy at 800kg.

Should be skiable this weekend despite rain on Friday and thaw on Saturday. Looks to be turning a bit colder next week and the webcam is showing a good base so perhaps another week or so ?
The real issue now is the wind. If its not too windy then we will probably run this weekend.

I'm feeling feeling positive - until the half term when its time to get nervous abou the hair dryer kicking. I really just want a proper winter again so Easter would be just right.

Hope to be up there tomorrow. The report from the website today sounds good:
23rd January - It is intended to run the ski tow tomorrow Sunday from 10a.m. Despite poor visibility conditions today have been good. The runs are complete with a good cover of granular spring snow giving a good fast surface. Plenty of variety of skiing is available. The lift queue today was only a few minutes.
May even get a little overnight fresh snow.

Sssh - nothing to see here, no full cover on a good base being refreshed with snow showers. Definately not a testament to hours of piste prep over the last 5 weeks or so. Definately not. no no no, definately nothing to see no relaxing day doing circuits has been missed by anyone.

Is anyone intending to ski with us this weekend?
|
Yep!! Mrs MA & I are Weardale Ski members - but as they were shut last weekend and cover is looking patchy on the webcam,
it looks like we'll be looking to take advantage of the old reciprocal ski arrangement
How many days have you run this season? And what's the record?

Not sure a reputation for nerd stats is a good thing but the tow has run every sunday since the 20th and all but one saturday. Between the 20th Dec and 3rd Jan it didnt run on Christmas day and I think it was the day before new years. Since the 3rd I think its also done atleast two or three weekdays. When it hasnt run a lot of the time its been bad weather.
At a rough count I've done 21days skiing this season split between Weardale and Yad Moss but mostly Yad Moss. I might be wrong on this one but I think in the year 24th Jan 09 to 24th Jan 10 Yad Moss was open for skiing for 10 weeks. I think I managed 31days (for the first time since the mid 80s) split between weardale and Yad Moss. Although I still ski frustrating badly!
Personally I think I deserve to ski until easter and beyond. Depending on which long term you look at this weekend and next weekend look on at the moment. If the weather does what is has for the last few years Feb / March can be quite settled. What will do for us is a week of temps like this afternoon combined with rain. Its been 4-5degree C today but going cold again with somemore snow. What little fell last weekend may have been wiped off but the base only gets stronger with freeze thaw. As last weekend proved even light snow really gets things going.
Last weekends numbers would be good for me as it was nice to clock the distance up for the first time in a few weeks but not sure what will happen this weekend, I think the sun and internet could bring out more people.

Yesterdays mild snap doesn't seem to have done much damage at all.
Summit webcam showing a little settlement but still solid cover. There also appears to be some light icing this morning.
http://csc.tayloredtechnology.com/ski/large.aspx?picture=Yadmoss-2-28-01-2010-09-12.jpg
Later this afternoon we will get some more snow which will turn wet. That isn't a bad thing because it should stick to everything without being blown off the runs by the strong westerly wind before it re freezes.
Will probably need the tiller operational for the W/E because the skiing surface is likely to be frozen.

Could be snow could be sleet at the moment but I'm going for snow. 2degree temp difference between 450m and 850m across the pennines - bodes well for it snowing - has been at Dun Fell for 3 hours or more now.

Why does Yad M seem to hold the snow so much better than Weardale ? (W'dale being north facing - and (I think?) a bit higher....)

Mountainaddict,
Weardale faces NE whereas Yad Moss faces slightly north of west. YM is about 250' higher than the top of Weardale. This winter most of the snow has come from the north east and south east, thereby drifting deepest on south and west facing aspects. Harwood probably has the deepest snow of all. Thy are certainly having to dig :
http://harwoodski.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=7961377
The snow falling tonight should be benefitting Raise best of all since that is the highest club field at 2,400' - 2,790' and faces NE, catching snow effectively from the west through NW. It could also be helpful at Weardale but i suspect the temperature is just to high there at the moment, but it might drop later. Its currently about 2C at Yad Moss, perhaps 2.5C at Weardale and probably about 1C at Raise.
Carn't really tell from the Nenthead webcam (1,500') whether its sleeting there or not. I suspect not.

F2 at weardale starts roughly the same height as Yad Moss but stops short, as PeterS points out. Wind direction plays a big part, as do snow fencing and piste prep. Weardale is much more about open terrain and natural snow holding. The reason Yad is holding up so well is because there is around 3 hours of piste prep goes on nearly every day its opened. Start of the season Yad Moss had westerly winds to contend with. Our Piste basher driver built the whole top of the run out of snow from the catch fences. If you look at the lower web cam now run this side of the tow has been built out of bulldozed snow from higher up the hill.

Thanks to the ridiculous amount of average speed camera enforced road works on the M6 and an hour long diversion through Wolverhampton I never made it on Saturday. Gutted.
I'm working in Newcastle on Thursday evening. Are you likely to open either Thurs or Fri?

Alan,
Probably not I'm afraid. Our operators are away at the moment, but keep an eye on the website.

Looks like we're in for a fairly persistent thaw over the next 10 days or so. After that the cold weather may return

there is a good chance looking forward this far out of some more decent skiing if we can get a team up there, though we may be a bit thin on operators.

Hoorah! Let's hope so! After skiing on at least one day of the last 7 weekends (x4 Pennines trips plus Scotland, France and Bulgaria) I need to keep my run going!! (especially as the following 2 weekends I'll be in Fernie, making it either 9 out of 10 or 10 out of 10 weekends ).

Weekend 8 of skiing in the pennines in a row looking likely then, and perhaps a bit more? Weardale openend today (no skiing there for 10days or so).
meteogroup forecasts for Boltshope and Great Dun Fell both showing cold and wintry for the next 2weeks - oh please. Since Yad sits midway between the two in height if not quite in distance this is the one I'm going for. Snow snow and more snow even if it has just taken 2hrs to drive across the peak district. Where are your snow chains people!

Have to admit that I too am all too often to be found hunched over my PC keyboard looking for any glimmer of longlasting cold weather over the Pennines......What/where are the "meteogroup forecasts"? Must add them to my favourites immediately! And where's Boltshope??

Phoned the hotlines and Yadmoss, Harwood & weardale don't seem to be open today.
Allenheads is. I've looked at their website but all I can see is a small ropetow in a field.
What's it like?
Is it worth the detour from the A69 for a couple of hours skiing thisafternoon?

AlanA - that about sums it up, small rope tows in a field. Two, one at each side. Run is around 100-150m with about 30m drop. They used to have a tow on steeper ground but took it down during the run of thin seasons. Would be good to see it back again.
If you're really going to weather nerd the pennines - cybermoor webcams, espcially the Howhill one. Favourite of PeterS. Metcheck.com hobbies forecast does a YadMoss one in the snowboard section - hit and miss. MWIS lakes forecast does the Cumbrian bit of the Pennines as well. Ski-allenheads weather web cam - live feed. Weardale ski club webcam - updates 08:45 daily. At 1900' ish so good for snow level, when its sunny the hill in the background is over 700m. Netweather.tv was recently recomended - does an alston forecast if you ask it.
Missed anything PeterS?

Only snowforecast.com which has pages for Yad Moss, Swinhope (Weardale) and Raise (Lake District). http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ is also good to track the falling snow in real time.
Looks good for tomorrow. MWIS has the wind light and visibility generally improving through the day. Hardly any loss of snow at all since last week so it should be good tomorrow. The snow will be quite soft and since its all gone from the towns it should be fairly quiet with shortish queues, assuming nothing breaks. The inetntion is to run the tow from about 10:30am.
I'll be up in the morning to help open everything up but won't be skiing tomorrow.
Next week it looks to get much colder with the possibility of snow showers from the east.
