There are a lot of lifts closed, is it because of the conditions or the lack of people?

johnnyboy1,in some cases it could just be because it is nightime and the lifts and pistes are closed. Some of the ones shown on the tourist office site as closed though are wind and avalanche prone,(the top pistes of MOneteir appear to be closed for safety reasons) .Some of them will just be closed because the resort is quiet, and it will keep pistes fresher for the busier fortnight to come.

Wots the story on the cheapseats at the thermal springs in Monetier. Have they been dismantled for pure spite or was there a "proper" reason

boardbiker, no one around . Flat light early this morning but improved during the day. Pistes in good condition and even with quite a few lifts not running, there is good access to most of the mountain. Off-piste was good, although the fluffy stuff had bcome a little heavier, so with skis at least, I had to work a little harder. Maybe a top up later in the week.

Out of curiosity, has Chantemerle been subjected to some major redevelopment in the centre of the village? I was looking at Google Earth the other day and it looked as though the whole centre building complex had effectively gone.

Argh! What? The Yeti has gone? Bottom of the Mickey run? That was our place of refuge after the rigours of the day. Happy hour at the Yeti made the drinks about affordable! This puts a severe dampening on the possibility of my group's return to Serre Che for the 3rd time in 5 years!
Scandalous!

carled, wrong Yeti. That one is still around. It's the one in Chantemerle that's gone.
Montegenevre pass closed from the Italian side for the past couple of days, due to avalanches. Anyone hoping to use that route driving from Turin will need local info before travelling. It snowed last night, so there is a possibilty it's not open yet. I can't help with more up to date info 'cause I don't speak Italian.

Helen Beaumont, sorry, I don't have any French info line. I was told by friends who tried to go back on Monday and by a friend who lives in Montgenevre, yesterday. It is snowing again now, so not looking good for driving.

Helen Beaumont, I am indeed.
The website that the Serre Che website provides seems to provide all the information on the roads. http://www.inforoute05.fr/cg05en.htmld
It does indeed show that the Col is closed hmmmm.... doesn't bode well. I'd be rather happy for local people to keep me informed.
Any predictions for how long it will take them to reduce the avalanche risk and clear the road?

chris, carled, that is not the yeti, it never was the yeti it was always called La Grotte du Yeti, the yeti was in chantemerle.
La grotte is still there and is exactly as the name suggests! Great if you wanna get totally blasted. I avoid the place at night but quite like it for apres ski.
Christopher, i wouldn't worry, its wednesday, everything changes and changes quickly round here. I'm sure the col will be open by saturday. If it isn't you will not be the only ones having problems getting here!

AlainR, I stayed in Le Bez for a couple of days in March, slightly rustic, but with very comfortable feel to the place. As snowangel. says, the Frog is really good (or was when we were there), though by all accounts although we didn't eat in Le Bez the food there is very good. Can't really comment on the bars as we didn't have enough time to sample - back on Jan 10th to take care of that omission.

Only 4 days to go now
A couple of questions ...
I remember at some resorts I've been to you (can't remember where - maybe 3 valleys) that if you buy a ski pass starting on the next day, you can actually start on the day you buy it from around 3 PM (or whatever). Does anybody know if you can do this in Serre Chevalier? The alternative is to buy some half-day passes of course but I'm not sure when we'll get in and be ready after getting unpacked and getting the ski hire sorted.
Has anyone got any recommendations for a good restaurant in Villeneuve on the chalet host's night off?
Many thanks
Ed

Cheers for the info guys - Hopefully we'll actually be able to get there!
Rustic is good - The last 2 trips were spent in Serbia. Hospitality wasn't a great point, but the snow was awesome (not to mention the price.....)
Is it walking distance from Le Bez to Villeneuve centre?

boardbiker, it is snowing and it is totally flat light, but i'm going to brave it having spent all morning trying to find the boy a job.
ecsleath, You can't use your passes the day before. You can buy a 3 hour pass which starts as you pass the first lift.

AlainR, If you ask in at the Hotel du Bez, Tina might be able to squeeze you in for meals. They change the menu each night, 3 set courses. If they have the same Swedish chef as they've had in the it will be blimming good. Jolly atmos - lots of Swedes, lots of communal tables so great to meet folks. Raclette night is good value. They've also got an honesty system with the bar, so you pour your own then pay your tab at the end of the night. There's also the Bidule - you can order takeaway pizza or eat in. I think it was pricier, and has changed hands since we ate there many moons ago but was ok. Pastelli was good too. Wasn't too keen on the P'tit Lard, but again it was a long time ago when we ate there. There are also Pizza takeaway [well I assume it is still there] down at Hameau du Bez which is a row of shops on the way up from the P&V place towards Bez.
Villeneuve is about a 5 - 10 min stroll down the hill [so not a great stagger back up - take the long route round by the church - less of a sharp climb.], and there are some nice places there - the Petit Pont is good down over the main road in the old village by the river. Pre-booking is good.
If you stagger between the Hotel du Bez and the apartments next door through the little alley, you can ski down the back field behind the hotel to the Pontillas lift. Where are you staying?

MarjMJ, Thanks
We're staying at Le Grand Aigle. Probably not the flashest of joints, but somewhere to sleep, and on a half board basis. Hopefully the food is ok.
Just how busy should I expect it to get over Christmas?
