friends borrowing our apartment this week said they woke up to fresh snow at their overnight stop, just south of Dijon, last night. Then a lot of freezing fog which slowed them down a good deal. (Just goes to show you can't plan your journey on the basis of doing 85mph the whole way!) But once they got above the fog, out of Sallanches into the Arly Valley - magic. I've warned them the next few days might be a big cloudier. Dry, with average or lower temperatures, sounds fine to me.

During half term in Feb we skirted Dijon and the temperature was 22°C, this is certainly a different winter!
In terms of outlook my reading of the 12Z and 18Z charts is that the trend is for cooler weather and some snow from Christmas day. Not that much but a small top up for most.

My brother said it was snowing by the frankfurt airport tonight... I personally think he's lying but that would be odd, if it were true, as 20km out there didn't seem to be a cloud in the sky.

hedley, you're right. The Snow Gods must sometimes think we are very ungrateful. The Les Saisies website says 52 out of 52 pistes are open, which is not that common at any time of year, but especially Christmas. But I confess to hoping for some more snow before 5 January, which is when we arrive. The snow will be pretty tired by then. You'll have to wait to decide which skis to take - how about both?

harrymac, where's vallmeina? Italy? There's a place called Valmeinier in france. Is it possible you're using the wrong spelling? Sorry if this is a really silly question.....

Reading the meteo threads on skipass.com, it seems that the jury is out on the development of the weather - relatively minor differences in evolution of the relationship between the air masses involved could make a big difference to the Alps, at the cross-roads, so to speak - maybe damp, but maybe cold and dry. So my conclusion is that we have to wait some days yet for any reliable indication of what the weather might be doing in the second half of next week!

The ECM and GFS are suggesting cold and snow form around the 3rd Jan. Leave the detail to the experts but that is when it looks like the dry spell will end.

Chamonix meteo forecasting strong foehn winds Weds/Thurs. Though with low confidence, so there's hope.....

Metcheck is showing a rise in temperaturs from the beginning of next week in Les Arcs Is this a general trend or is it too far away to worry about at the moment?

holidayloverxx, Na- a keen tryer! inherited from my late dad but i must confess im only weather mad in the snow season. From my very poor reading of the charts, ill say that at les arcs on the 12th jan there will be a very high chance of snowfall- its looking good at the moment-sadly this can all change

snow-forecast.com looking pretty grim this morning - heaps of rain at resort level for many places, with a very high freezing level. Meribel, for example, could be looking very sad unless the freezing level drops. Still, it does quite often seem to drop - can anyone give us more than baseless hopes?

pam w, well to quote from the rather excellent Weather email from Admin this morning "Now, with Europe getting the best start to a season for 20-30 years...." even with a bit of rain and slightly warmer temperatures, I don't think all that snow is going to disapear.
If anything it may soften the pistes nicely and get rid of the reported hard-packed and icy patches
Think positive!

Boris, yep, I hope you're right. But 46mm (2inches) is not a "bit of rain"!

pam w, true, but lets face it the reports are rarely right for snow so why should they be any more accurate for rain?
Perhaps it will fall as snow

Sorry Pam. Can't see anything but temperatures being above average for the next 10-ish days, with a gradual cooldown towards the end of that period. That's a long way off though and may change. Certainly warmer in the next few days though with precipitation all over the place. LOTS of precipitation at times, there's a whole wedge of warm wet air crashing over... well pretty much the whole of europe, to be honest!
Freezing level pretty high up too. It will fall as rain in some lower resorts. Good job there's a good base down then! Looks like a decent chance of a gradual cooldown for mid Jan onwards at present.

carled, thanks. As we're going to be out there till 6 February I won't start panicking yet. In fact I won't panic at all, but it's looking a little dismal for people with a week from Saturday.

Snow forecast have got the freezing levels down to 2100 by sunday with the trend continuing downwards. Some of the lower resorts look set for rain but as carled says this could change. Next few days key though.

Well i don't know about anywhere else but, its been snowing in Italy Aprica which is just below 1200m because i have seen it on there live webcam. Local tv forecast is for snow the next couple of days to , iam not a weather Geek just check before i go.
In my experience those long range forecasts are about as much use as a wet paper towel especially from metcheck, i wouldn't worry to much or take notice of any forecast longer than 3 days ahead.
